A Scud Away from Hell
The 2015 squad got a huge jump in not just the number of wins, but in finding several (new) solid contributors. This includes FA signings like Revis, shrewd trades like Marshall, promising picks like Mauldin, and getting value out of once-forgotten players like Powell.

Mike Maccagnan is the Jets GM that no Patriots fan want. He and Todd Bowles ("B&M") have finally got the circus out of town for good.

Lots of personnel decisions for 2016. I've listed them in order of importance (my take):
  1. Muhammed Wilkerson: estimated franchise tag for a DE is $14.78m. With 2nd year Leonard Williams on the roster, will B&M retain the All-Pro?
  2. Ryan Fitzpatrick: a 3-year extension with lots of guaranteed $ in first two seems like a win-win. With Geno pretty much out of the picture and Bryce Petty still learning the ropes, Fitz is a sure-bet to return. But for how much?
  3. Damon Harrison: not everyone can stay in the crowded & talented front-four, and Snacks seems like the odd-man out. He'll get a decent payday somewhere.
  4. Bilal Powell: what a revelation. Having Powell out in the final game really impacted the Jets offense, I thought. RBs certainly aren't a huge burden on the cap, but Powell will be on the top of the RB list.
  5. Chris Ivory: the disappearing act the last few games raise questions about his durability, once again. He'll be 28 come march. This is where Jets could be looking to draft a replacement.
  6. Antonio Allen: a perfect conversion project back to a safety spot -- a value re-sign
  7. Demario Davis: what happened to Davis? He was one of the few good, young LB Jets had groomed lately, and he completely fell off the map.
  8. Calvin Pace: I've been calling for Pace to be off Jets roster every year since 2012. 2016 may finally be the year that happens with Mauldin showing lots of promise
  9. Darrin Walls: at 27, not as young as people think. Could be a cheap depth re-sign
  10. Stevan Ridley: showed very little of the burst that he had in NE. This could be it for Ridley, and I feel bad for him. If not for the knee injury last year, he would be on a 2-3 year contract right now.
  11. Willie Colon: see Calvin Pace
  12. Ryan Quigley: Jets ST were a drag all season long. Replacing "Shankapotomus Quigs" is an easy step forward
  13. Kenbrell Thompkins: it's the same KT that almost saved Jets season -- can't hang onto balls, soft as a boiled persimmon
Jets now play a 2nd place schedule, and will draft #20 -- the worst non-playoff spot.

Ivory went down hard at the end of his long run yesterday. I was in a NYC cab today listening to sports talk (not the FAN, must've been ESPN, I didn't recognize them) and they were saying that Ivory was hurt - shoulder. Makes sense because he got little action after that - I would have thought that they would have crammed Ivory down their throats.

Watching Ivory lower his pads and flatten LBs and safeties is great fun- I've always admired his game. He's probably harming his career, though.

FWIW, I think that Fitz may have had a hurt throwing arm. He's never been Rich Gannon, but his throws were off yesterday. He had this weird sidearm slinging motion that I don't remember seeing before, and his throws were hooking and slicing. That's not why he threw the picks - he's always had a problem with picks, and it seems like he struggles to see coverages sometimes. It did seem like he was completing a lower % of throws, though, and he had passes tail away from guys several times in the parts of the game I saw.

Anyhoo- this team desperately needs a TE.

Ivory wasn't a hundred percent for something like the last 10 games of the season, in and out of the lineup and very rarely the guy we saw early on even when he was playing.

I'm hoping those last ten games tamp down his value on the open market, allowing the Patriots to swoop in and sign him. Ivory is a back I suspect BB would like - versatile, runs tough - but he seems to value the position so little that it would need to be for not terribly big money.

BB also values dependability and I think Ivory is just hurt too often
That doesn't help considering NFL players get injured all the time and it's very random how and when the injuries happen. That is extremely difficult to plan for.

The Pats in particular could keep a gigantic hospital in business with all the injury trouble they have had. Ivory would be a monster on the Pats.

Ivory would excel (does excel) at helping to open up the passing game by bringing more defenders into the box, since a LB is not going to bring him down with an arm tackle

He's also a good receiver out of the backfield and picks up blitzes well. So he wouldn't have to run for 1000 yards to be a nice complementary piece for the Patriots.

“@MMehtaNYDN: Sources: 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick wants out of San Fran… and in with Jets. #nyj Story: https://t.co/JXR5KBFHCK https://t.co/EOD2DyMYMv

The Jets’ decades-long search for a franchise quarterback could unexpectedly land them one of the most dynamic players in the league.

The Daily News has learned that embattled 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick wants out of San Francisco after a forgettable 2015 that included on-field struggles that resulted in a benching midway through the season and a coaching change after it. The Jets are his preferred destination, according to sources.

The Jets, aware of Kaepernick’s desire to play for them, are intrigued, but still in the early stages of their offseason planning and evaluation, according to sources. They’re also deathly afraid of tampering (see: Darrelle Revis situation, circa 2015).

Deathly afraid of tampering? Lol, ok. Johnson paid a small fine for blatant tampering in the Revis case so I assume the Jets aren't remotely worried.

See you later Cromartie.

The Jets have released veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie, the teamannounced on Monday. New York frees up $8 million in cap space with the move.

Cromartie signed a four-year, $32 million deal to return to the Jets last off-season, but wasn’t guaranteed any money past his first season. In 15 games, he made 33 tackles in 2015 with a fumble recovery and team-high 16 pass defenses.

New York now has a starting spot open opposite Darrelle Revis on defense. Buster Skrine, the team’s nickel corner, is next on the depth chart.

I realize this may be his last chance to cash in on a decent deal, but but there aren't many better situations than playing with that defense and throwing to Marshall and Decker.

Maybe he is hoping the Broncos can't sign Brock.

This is a surprise: #Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to hit the free agent market, sources say. Sides are far apart on a potential deal
Agree with T4W mostly. Jets FO must be wary of the up & down nature of Fitz' career + they could be banking on the strengths of their skill position players and think they can stick another QB in there and make it work.

However, there are a lot of cups spinning at the same time. Their biggest needs are at the RB and OL spots, yet Ivory and Powell could both walk. Brick should be back, but they need to get younger at the line. They also need to get something close to league average in TE play, Amaro coming back notwithstanding.

If Brock resigns with Denver, who else is out there? RG3 aka no one? Why wouldn't he try free agency?

Agree, he should test it out, it is his last chance for a big-ish deal and he clearly doesn't mind being an NFL nomad.

Maybe Houston will pay him, they need a QB ;)

@AdamSchefter Jets and free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick are nowhere close to an agreement, with no deal expected anytime soon, per sources.
Jets are playing dice by being cute with Fitz's contract. Osweiler and Bradford are getting $18m/yr on their deals. It seems most of the Jets fanbase has $12m as some arbitrary line in the sand, and I don't think that'll cut it.

On the other hand, Forte's contract is 3 years at $12m ($8m gtd). I have no idea why Pats couldn't do that, other than to put all the trust in Lewis to stay healthy in 2016.

Rapoport just tweeted that if the Jets can't get Kaepernick in a trade, they will look into signing Brian Hoyer. Oh, Jets. Don't ever change.

Also Schefter said they are keeping Bilal Powell, do they even have money left to be competitive for Fitzpatrick?

Without an established QB (yeah, Fitz would count), the Jets season will be more like crosswinds than crossroads.

Opens up salary space for a QB and that offense needed a productive TE. Good move by the Jets if they can get a QB.

Is that the 8th pick in rd 2? I don't know, they were rich at the position but it sucks to lose such a good player

Doesn't matter now that the trade is fake but Fitzpatrick and Kaepernick would be my top two choices if I were a Jets fan. Not sure how Petty fits in to all of this though.

Idk what the staff thinks of Geno. Maybe they are just going to go with him

I thought this was hilarious:

Rich Cimini ‏@RichCimini Woody Johnson on inability to sign Mo: "It's amazing since we've been negotiating with him for a few years now." #nyj

Jets always handle their the star player with grace and savvy. What could go wrong?

Speaking of:

@TonyPauline More from Florida pro-day where word is the NY Jets are shopping & listening to offers for Muhammad Wilkerson

The Jets are in a curious* place here. Snacks is gone, they just restructured G James Carpenter, and would most likely restructure/cut D'Brickashaw Ferguson as well. They literally had zero room before the Carpenter move.

You have to think Mo will command better numbers than Vernon, although a year older (26 vs. Vernon's 25). With the expected increase in cap, that could mean a $90m+ contract with more than half guaranteed. Throw in Richardson's troubles & the fact that he's also 25 entering the last of his rookie year, needless to say Jets FO have a difficult set of decisions ahead.

That's all before counting whatever Fitz will cost, but including the $17m cap hit on Revis (yeah, BB did the right thing here).

* curious as in between a rock and a hard place
