Day makes par to stay in a tie at -9.  Holmes and English both look to make par at 16, and they have the par 5 18th in front of them.  Got to think Holmes has an advantage, especially if he can get home on 18 with an iron at the par 5.

Stallings (defending champ) and Day in the clubhouse at -9.  Holmes is on 17 at -9, and English and a couple of others at -8 still on course.  Great finish shaping up.  If nobody makes birdie on 17 or 18, playoff coming.

Holmes lays up.  I like the move.  Guarantee yourself the playoff, have a decent shot at winning.
I don't.

He could get over the water with a 4 iron. And he could take the water out of play by going to the right.

Just way too cautious.

Yup, sudden death I believe.  I don't hate Holmes' decision to not go for it.  I think the biggest issue is that he was between clubs.   I think he's carrying a 3 iron, which he wasn't sure he could get there with an all carry 235 yard shot, and the last thing you can do there is put it in the water.  His next club is a 5 wood that he carries 275, so there was no chance of him holding the green, and chipping back towards the water from the rough behind the green was a way harder shot than the 73 yard wedge in that he had.  In the end, he had about a 10 footer for the win and just missed.  I'm not sure he would have guaranteed himself any better by hitting a 5 wood over the green, and hitting a 3 iron and coming up short would have been the dumbest of dumb moves.

Tiger is 62nd in the world rankings, the lowest he's been since he was a rookie in 1996. The past 12 months have been spectacularly bad for him. I'm pretty unhappy about it, golf is better with Tiger in the mix. And right now, he's just an average player.

The world ranking isn't really indicative of a bad stretch of golf. He hasn't played well in the very limited started but he has plummeted because hasn't played and can't stay healthy. His back gave way at the Honda last year, so we're closing in on an entire year where he played less than 10 competitive rounds.

As a big a Tiger fan, the back is real bummer. He blamed this WD on the long day and the two delays before he tee'd off. He said he couldn't get loose/didn't warm up properly the second time. Delays are pretty common on tour, it's pretty alarming if his back can't hold up through one.

Well, it's been a bad stretch coupled with a bad stretch of injuries. He can't stay healthy and when he's been healthy, he hasn't really been in the mix. He was quite in the mix in 2013.

And, yes, it's very alarming. A 39 year old shouldn't become balky because of a delay.

That is kind of a weird article. It says he wants to play the Honda, which is usually on his schedule. He usually skips Pebble and Riviera anyway, so he's not really planning on taking a leave? He just won't enter if he feels his game is stil crap in 3 weeks?

Incredible weather at Pebble.  Looks like golf heaven

Yeah Pebble is playing like it does in the simulator today. The first 7 are just really easy  (ok 5 is tricky, but the rest are easy in this weather)

Oops ... Looks like an FCC fine coming for CBS.

I particularly liked when one of the broadcasters cleared his throat after Day let it fly.

Two threads going here, but Nantz pulled a fopar, at least to me:

Nantz: "it's with heavy hearts today", background sad music, "Phil Simms"...."lost his beloved mother today." Christ, he made it seem for a bit that Phil died.

I don't know, I thought DLIII did a pretty good job. He certainly made mistakes, but it was probably the best, most cohesive US team since Zinger's winners in 08. He was a bit too conservative, but hopefully he's learned his lesson.

I don't think Couples was/is willing to do it "their" way (and good for him), so he ultimately fell out of the discussion. It stinks - I think the US teams could use Freddy's laid back attitude. The pressure on these guys is enormous with losing 8/10. Plus, is there anyone in golf more fun to watch than Fred Couples? Alas, I would have been surprised to see him named captain.

I like the DLIII pick. Aside from Azinger, who else would it have been if you take Couples out of the equation? And if Zinger didn't play ball the PGA's way, he too was likely less of a candidate than we thought. Neither he nor Couples accepted the invite to the working group, or whatever it was, while DL III did. Could a guy like Justin Leonard be asked?  Here's a way out there thought:  David Duval. Part of the Crenshaw team, and motivated.  And now he has the time to give to the process. He was a best in the world player, has a major, and my understanding is that he's quiet and intense. That might work.  Who knows, though.  I'm perfectly fine with DL III and I predict he gets it done this time, with a sports shrink on his staff to keep the fellas calm and breathing easy.
