Gosder Cherilus still not 100% healthy. Released by the Colts:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000503738/article/gosder-cherilus-released-by-indianapolis-colts

Quote
The Colts made Cherilus the highest-paid right tackle in football when they signed the former first-round pick to a five-year, $34.5 million contract in 2013. Cherilus started 16 years in his first season with the Colts, but was one of the least effective right tackles in football during an injury-plagued 2014. He finished 70th out of 84 qualified tackles in Pro Football Focus' ratings last season.

Colts OL depth isn't great, with shaky starters pretty much everywhere except LT with Anthony Castonzo:
  • Center: Khaled Holmes
  • LG: Donald Thomas -- out all of 2014
  • RG: Todd Herremans -- sorry, that should the "The Corpse of"
  • RT Jack Mewhort -- moving to the RT position after spending 2014 at LG
This is a unit that can't create lanes and may be even worse at plugging them. Can't wait for Collins, Nink, Brown, etc. to dominate up front.

That is an impressive feat; HAS to be a record.

That's counted in dog years.

Or the 9 lives that Colts fans have in getting Luck after just a single year of suck post-Manning. Colts may have the bottom-5 OL in the league and Luck is keeping them afloat.

Trent Richardson cut from the Raiders:

@RapSheet A show of RB depth. But brutal for Trent. RT @BWilliamsonESPN: Sources: Raiders have cut Trent Richardson.

Makes me giggle every time I think of the 1st rounder Colts gave up. LOL-boo-hoo.

Browns release Phil Taylor (bit of a shocker). Oh and this:

@RapSheet With the release of Phil Taylor, the #Browns now have no one left from their Julio Jones trade haul (Taylor, Little, Marecic, Weeden)

Former BBTL 2014 Draft Binky Louis Nix cut by the Texans.  Everyone was shocked when he tumbled to the 3rd round but now that tumble seems more justified.
Seems like a lot of big DL getting cut. Nix, Matt Shaughnessey, Darnell Dockett so far. Pats have options if they decide to part with Branch. I'm assuming Siliga is a lock along with Brown and Easley and that they'll add a fourth DT/3-4 DE type.

Am I the only guy that likes Branch? I thought he was really solid at the end of last year and he's had a pretty good career. To me he's not near the 53rd guy on the roster. Okay, he's not that far from that, either...just saying I wouldn't have him on the bubble -- James White, yes; one of the safeties (Wilson?), sure; Dobson absolutely; Hoo-man..maybe, though Develin may have saved him. But I think Branch makes the club....

It's based on nothing but personal biases but I've always seen Branch as a guy who has not lived up to his talents and bounced around the league as a result.  He came in last year for the stretch run and played great, I am just skeptical that we saw the real Alan Branch last vs. a guy swept up in the moment.  I'd be happy to be proven wrong though becuase I am really basing this just on gut instinct.  He showing up and failing the conditioning test was another strike against him in my eyes, but to be fear lots of players have failed that over the years.

I was at Michigan in 2006-2007 and I swear Branch was the best defensive player on a defense that had a lot of good players - guys like Stevie Brown, Leon Hall, Brandon Graham.

But I totally agree with T&A that he seemingly has some "lazy" traits and has probably not pushed himself to be the best he can possibly be.

NFL's All-Pro Twitter Team is having a rough day. Weatherford getting cut made my day, though I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up elsewhere.

Oh, fully agree -- and I think there were indications of that same laziness this camp, too, so not even that I think he saw the light when he was out of football the first part of last season. But he did play well and he gives them a big body to go with Siliga when they want to play that style.

The Eagles just cut an intriguing UDFA RB named Raheem Mostert, who had a monster preseason (157 rushing yards, 194 receiving) for them but was just in a bad situation given their depth at the RB position.  He might be a good sleeper candidate as a developmental 3rd down back with more youth and upside than Dion Lewis, who looks pretty pedestrian.

Love you MMS, but Lewis looked like the explosive back he was at Pitt. And he's proved himself capable of pass protectoin. Not sure if there's room on Pats RB depth either.

I have only been able to watch the preseason intermittently so I might have just missed the spots in which Lewis really flashed talent.  I'm inherently a little skeptical about the upside of a guy that has been in the league for four years with three different organizations (including teams without much RB talent like IND and CLE) and never really earned much playing time.  But I could definitely be wrong about him.

Indianapolis just traded for Oakland LB Sio Moore who had been in Del Rio's doghouse. Heard it literally first hand it should be announced later tonight. This could be a coup for them.

Giants are releasing not only FB Henry Hynoski, but WR James Jones.

He had a productive season with the Raiders in 2014, after spending several with the Packers (hmmmmmmmmmmmm). Had signed with the Giants just this year.

Former SoSH draft semi-binky TE Arthur Lynch released by the Jets. He was a 5th round 2014 draftee.

TE starved Jets releasing you is not good news, but wouldn't be surprised if BB kicked the tires on him.

@MMehtaNYDN Jets have cut Jason Babin, per source.

@MMehtaNYDN Jason Babin is the first relatively surprising cut by the Jets. Solid veteran. Bodes well for Trevor Reilly now. #nyj

BTW, Trevor Reilly is the 7th round pick from the 2014 draft. He has become a bit of a cult hero/binky among Jets fans.

Pats #1 opponent Steelers make their cuts. Among them LJ Fort, who was with the Pats during camp. Per Schefter:

Pittsburgh released running backs Jawon Chisholm and Josh Harris, defensive linemen Matt Conrath, Ethan Hemer and Mike Thornton, safeties Jordan Dangerfield, Alden Darby and Gerod Holliman, offensive linemen Reese Dismukes, B.J. Finney and Doug Legursky, cornerbacks Kevin Fogg and B.W. Webb, linebackers L.J. Fort, Shayon Green and Howard Jones, and wide receivers Shakim Phillips and Jarrod West.
The Steelers placed offensive linemen Kelvin Palmer and Mitchell Van Dyk on the team’s Waived/Injured List.

When do the Pats release Brady so we can see which one teams would rather have?

@FieldYates Source: the Lions are releasing both QB Kellen Moore and TE Joseph Fauria.

Fauria was a great end zone target in 2013 (18 receptions, 7 TDs), but unfortunately not much more. Perhaps he can join Christian on WEEI.

Best of luck to him & his daughter.
Yikes, would Leah lose health coverage? Goodell has to be calling in a favor here to pick him up.

I'm unclear to whom that favor would be called. Jest?

Sean Payton is a proven fan. IIRC the Saints D-line isn't entirely settled.

Evidently she remains covered by the NFL plan for 5 years.

Bengals Director of Business Development Bob Bedinghaus told WCPO that Still's medical insurance will now "kick in" for the next five years. So Still, and most importantly, Leah, will be covered under the NFL's health insurance for the next five years, regardless of whether or not Still is picked up as a free agent.

Hope he catches on with another team, but at least he has some peace of mind regarding Leah's medical care.

Just for amusement sake, would be fun to see Dad react to Pats claiming him to be the 'big receiver'

You have to figure he'll land on their practice squad, no?

QB Matt Cassel
Who would have backed up Jimmy for $500, Alex?

Yes; and, beyond that, not even Roger Goodell is dumb enough to end up being the entity that denied Sill's daughter medical care.  The league or NFLPA will hire the guy full-time if that's what it takes to keep her coverage.

When the Cincinnati Bengals cut their 2012 second-round pick a year ago, a new NFL roster exception allowed the team to re-sign him to the practice squad despite being in his third season. It was a promise the team made to him so he could continue to carry health insurance.
It was a decision that brought peace and an element of security to Still and his family as his daughter, Leah, went through the terrifying stages of Stage 4 neuroblastoma treatments.
The Enquirer has confirmed that the Bengals cut Devon Still on Saturday, but the peace of mind can continue. Because the Bengals kept Still a part of the team, he will have health insurance for the next five years -- even if he never plays another down in the NFL.
