Oh my. Stanford giving the game back to MSU.

Stanford's is playing like they want to lose.  On that last drive - two stupid penalties on 3rd down.  The offsides hurt them because they stuffed the run.  Throw in a dropped INT and the defense is lucky that drive resulted in a  punt.

I don't think either team wants to win  this game.  How the hell do you fumble when you are about to go up 7 heading into the 4th quarter?

Stanford needs Hogan to put a drive together.  The whole offense has been relying on the big play all day.  Without that big run by Gaffney, or those deep passes, the offense has done nothing.

So, throwing it and getting the penalty helps Stanford out.

See, they are smart.

The Land of Fist Pumps
Questionable decision to kick the FG on 4th and 5 down by 7 with 5 minutes to go.

The Rose Bowl clock stopped running between 2nd Down and 3rd Down.  That gives Stanford an extra 30 to 40 seconds.

Why can the holder on a kick run with the ball when he fields the snap with his knee already on the ground?

Edit:  They actually fixed the clock.  It was a 53 second difference.  These refs are more competent than the Pats/Dolphins crew who ignored the same thing three weeks ago.

Shawn, you're exactly right.  It should have been dead ball when his knee was down and he had possession of the ball.  Total missed call by the refs that led to the penalty which led to three points.

I think you're incorrect here. The rule is different for a holder. His knee can be down

HAHAHAHAHA.  I fucking hate the fullback dive so much.  Anyone that runs it deserves to be stuffed, IMO.

Nice win for Mich St.    They really gave Stanford opportunity after opportunity to hang around in this game,  but when things looked worst because of the pick 6, Mich St turned it on and completely dominated the rest of the game

Twib, can't quote posts, but you may be right, however, I think he ceased be a holder at some point there.  I went back and rewound it and watched it in super slow motion.  He caught the snap, put the ball down and then lost the handle on the ball.  He regained the handle and then attempted to re-spot it.  At that point, the kicker then aborted the kick, and then with his knee still down, he started to get up and run with it.  I think had he caught the snap and got up immediately, he would have been ok, but when he bobbled it and then re-spotted it, I think he had to lift his knee off the ground before running with it.  I could be wrong, but that would be my interpretation.  interesting question anyway, but it doesn't matter in the end.

Stanford play calling was all sorts of bad there.  Michigan State played a much better game today.  They earned this one.

Agreed, Shaw needs to at least make MSU think about a pass on short yardage. He made the same mistake mistake against Notre Dame on the goal line last year. It's easier for the defense when they can sell out to stop the run.

Yep.  Throw a couple wideouts to make the screen possible.  Also, with the box overloaded like that, Hogan has to give it to the tail back.  Even without Ellsworth, the fullback was never going to get a yard there.  Hogan can also run too, so an option where he tries to get a run on the outside is possible too.

The angle behind MSU's defense is better.  But the elevation from that walk-on LB is insane.
Insane!

“I personally view it as an opportunity,” Elsworth said. “I’m not coming in thinking I’m the guy. I still have to earn my position. There are guys like Darien Harris or guys that are right behind me or even with me. I still have to compete for the spot, take the opportunity and do what I can with the opportunity.”
Elsworth is a former walk-on from Goodrich, Mich., who has played all three linebacker spots in his career and has been a standout on special teams. Dantonio said he and Harris, a sophomore, will get work this week at practice, as will sophomore Ed Davis, who has played mostly on the outside.
Elsworth’s teammates have faith he’ll be able to step in and fill the void.
I think this is the moment Kyler Elsworth has been training five years for,” defensive tackle Tyler Hoover said. “To be in this position I think he will have the moment of his lifetime and has the confidence of his teammates that he’ll step up and make plays.”

How is that not a horse collar on the defender there?  Can't believe the announcers missed it completely.  Well, maybe I can.

The Granite State
UCF featuring a 5'9"/240 lb FB.

Coach: "He's built like a safe." LOL.

Loving this so far.

Edit: #39 is the "massive" FB mentioned two posts up. He's a jacked -up Oompa Loompa
