Now there's a shocker. I thought they might take a QB, but in the third round?

clearly a message to Cassel. Basically saves them a million or so a year on the backup QB spot. I mean, if Brady got hurt, the APtsa re not going anywhere and Cassel sucks. So save some money to spend on othe rpositions and maybe hope thi guy develops into a legiot backup

ESPN flashed his rushing stats as they announced the pick, so I wonder if they looked at his athleticism in a Matt Jones-type role.

And there goes Manningham. Ouch.

This pick sucks.

Does anyone feel that recently the Pats just make a number of reaches or wasted picks as we get into the latter rounds? Look at last year's draft after their first few picks. None of those guys stuck.

Problem is...they could have had this guy much later.

Carter wasn't "dissing" Welker, he was being realistic. Welker IS NOT a star WR. He is a complimentary player, albeit, a very good one. The star WRs are #1s and Welker isn't a #1.

Well, this is interesting:

Compares To: MATT CASSEL-New England...O'Connell is a more mobile passer, but like Cassel, he is going to need time and patient coaching to add technique and mechanical refinement. He is a rare-sized athlete with great mobility in the pocket, but his delivery is a mess and his footwork leaves a lot to be desired. He forces a lot of throws and needs generate better touch on his short-area throws and improve the zip on his deep passes. If a team preaches patience and has an established veteran in place to allow O'Connell several years to develop, he could be a good one. Rushing him, however, might render any pick used on O'Connell a wasted selection.

EDIT: Maybe it's because I have a tendency to be intrigued by QB choices, but I really don't mind taking this guy. Maybe not at this spot, because I think he'd be there the next time the Pats came up. But I think this guy could develop into a decent QB some day.

The kid seems like a good athlete, but not a Matt Jones level athlete. Jone's was a couple tenths better in the 40 yard dash. And Jones has struggled badly making the transition at the NFL level.

The NFLN is saying they think we may use him a lot in the pre season, letting him shine, then trading him for a high draft pick. Seems far fetched.

we just got our Steve Young I guess....
Yeah...the only diffence is Steve Young was a stud in college...stud.

Anyone know what San Diego gave up other than a 5th and their 3rd for the Pats 3rd? Probably nothing else I guess.

I'm dissapointed...even more so that the Gints got Manningham right after.

I feel like I hear this about almost every pick the Pats make. Their big board must be radically different from everyone else's. This does seem like a wasted pick considering there are still players available who can actually contribute to this year's team without first needing the starter to get hurt.

I think part of the reason none of the picks last year stuck was simply because they team was so good and had so much depth, there was no place to put them.

Is this kid really going to be that much of an upgrade over Gutierrez? I mean, if Brady goes down we're fucked anyways, so why burn a third round pick on someone who is irrelevant? What a waste that was. If you're going to waste a pick, why not see if Manningham can not be a douche bag?

BTwnDreamin, none of those guys stuck with the Pats because there weren't many spots available for rookies because they were very deep last year. ALL of the Pats selections from last year are still playing in the NFL. In fact, a couple of the OL started games last season. I think it was a solid draft but there just wasn't room for them because they weren't going to make the team over the vets that we had.

Well, yeah, not right away. Seems to me this is a purely long-term pick (or trade bait).

Lots of late round picks on most teams never stick.
Right, but we're talking about 3rd and 4th rounders...and a number of reaches. A number of late round picks also branch out. The Pats have made a lot of selections on QBs over the years since we took Brady and it seems they never really are sold on those picks. But to grab a guy here is a head scratcher. Hey I'm not the GM nor can I say BChick doesn't know what he's doing but it still makes you wonder. My point is, don't you think this guy would have been available in the 4th round or even the 5th (possibly)?

Maybe the plan is to use him in another role other than QB...as someone said earlier.

Chad Jackson will finally get his chance to not be a douche bag this season.

I guess because QBs are high value, but low percentage. So you have to draft 50 from rounds 2-7 to get a hit. More chances, and when Bishop, Cassel, Gutierrez don't pan out, get another lottery ticket.

Mayock gives us the best theory yet: They can't hold on to Cassel all the way until Brady is done and has his contract up after this year, and they need an heir or at least a good #2. Cassel gets moved after this year and O'Connell becomes that guy, and not a bad year to do this because they've already addressed their biggest needs.

Here
Belichick must really be turned off by the backups, in general, to take a QB in the 3rd round. Can't say I understand that one.

Suund about right. Always hoped Cassel would be our Shaub... didn't work out that way, unless he lights it up this preseason.
