Well-respected crew chiefs Ted Barrett, Greg Gibson, Tom Hallion, Sam Holbrook, Jerry Meals, Jim Reynolds and Bill Welke are among the group to hang up their chest protectors, while Marty Foster, Paul Nauert and Tim Timmons will join them in retirement.

According to this article, there were some changes to the pension deal that made it more attractive for some of the umps to retire now. And I never really thought of it, but it said that Reynolds had 7 concussions behind the plate over the years. Getting out before your brains are totally scrambled is a real draw, too.
