Rask isn't very good this season. He's been bad Rask a lot, going down early, and the book on him has always been to shoot high.
High blocker side. Lather, rinse, repeat. He was big in the 2nd period, though, very big. Bs have been on the other end of plenty of these.

in the explanation it also says the glove and the stick were both at or below crossbar level. So the fact it was inconclusive shouldn't matter.
Right. But the ref clearly said it hit the stick. I find that odd.

Rask was immense tonight despite the gift no goal call. Pens had a bunch of opportunities to score that he stuffed or forced misses on through positioning.

In what world is a goalie expected to get that Malkin bomb? I understand the complaints about Tuukka dropping early (and high blocker hole), but that shot beats every single goalie in the league.

I gotta agree with this. I've been pretty critical of Rask this year but that was a fucking missile off the stick of one of the best goal scorers in the world. I can't fault him for that one.

This kind of game is going to make Chiarelli think they can make a run because of the score.

I gotta say I don't understand this line of thought. What exactly is the alternative? This is a team that is similar to the team that was very good last year. At times they were dominant (22 wins in 27 games from Jan 20 to March 30) at other times (vs montreal, for example) they stunk up the joint.

In the last 4 years they have won the cup, been to the finals, and won a president's trophy. Do we really think that they cannot play better than they are now? Lucic suddenly sucks at age 25? Krejci and Bergeron have peaked at age 28 and 29? Rask had a kid and decided he didn't care anymore? It's impossible that Chara and Seidenberg might rebound? It's time to take drastic action and/or blow it up?

What do we accomplish by doing that? Is there some mainline vein of talent coming up that's going to make them competitive if we just clear off the cream of the team and let the new guys take over? If we don't trust Chiarelli to have built the team that exists should we really be hoping he blows it up midseason and tries to build a new one?

I am frustrated and disappointed with how this season has played out so far.

They has been hurt and/or played badly the whole year. There are a lot of games in hand but technically they are in 8th place right now. As of tonight's game the season is exactly half over. The team needs to play better and with more intensity on a night to night basis. Claude needs to coach better (whatever he is saying to the refs clearly isn't helping the team in the penalty department).

I can understand making a move of some sort, what what exactly is the alternative to thinking this team can make a run this year?

You say immense, I said very big—just shy of Christie-like. The high blocker side thing has clearly been the book on him for a while, and together with the dropping down early habit, has accounted for a bushel of the goals I've seen this year. He shrugs the shoulder or flings his elbow up in the air but the puck's already past him. I'm sure this is known by Tuukka and the coaching staff, it has to be.

Do you think he should have had that Malkin shot?

To be perfectly honest, it was probably a really shitty example for me to choose for what I think has been a very real phenomenon.

Nope, not at that speed. He was down though when the puck went past him. It's been a noteworthy trend and the opposition has taken note of it too. Have you not noticed this?

I've repeatedly said that I'm aware of this and agree. I just thought the Malkin goal was a shitty hill to die on with that point, but we cleared all that up a post or two ago.

Maybe this discussion should get split out if there are enough legs, but do people think this is unique to Tuukka? All butterfly goalies are weak upstairs.

I just think he might be dropping faster than he has in the past. But that's just (as it has to be) purely observational.
