Deals like this are perfect for the Red Sox. Doesn't commit them to a long term albatross. They need starting pitching. They do have money, especially if it's not a big commitment. And you don't want Montgomery's 35-36 year seasons anyway. If Arizona went with this, Boston should have just straight up given more $$ or one more year. It would have been perfect for this team.

But nope. Nothing. I don't have any issue if he gets a huge deal from someone. No problem. But this? UGH. So frustrating.

I know, I know. Maybe Montgomery never wanted to be here under any circumstances. Ok sure. Whatever.

1 year 25mm with a second year that vest with 10 starts.

It might be the most reasonable contract a good starting pitcher has signed the last several seasons. Can we finally fire up the off season in review thread and torch this free agency? Good players signing short short term deals and none of them will play for the Boston Red Sox.
Doesn't this make none of them coming here make even more sense based on how we know they view this team? Why would they commit short term money to a team they clearly view as being in a development year?

Ha, whatever. Just glad it wasn’t the Yankees. Fire this offseason into the sun. What an organizational failure.

Because if they added 1-2 quality starters they could have contended for the playoffs while also developing young talent. This organization fails to realize you can do both at the same time.

Because there are two outcomes….

1) the team is actually good and makes the playoffs and like… isn’t that the point?

Or

2) you sell pieces at the deadline and acquire more player capital for what was just money.

There hasn’t been one single justification for the lack of spending in the 4 months we’ve been on this topic. It’s all bullshit.

It’s almost as if articles from a variety of sources questioning this organization’s commitment weren’t just a far-reaching, wide-ranging conspiracy designed solely to generate clicks for MassLive.

Ippei may or may not be be guilty of massive theft, but John Henry and FSG are beyond all reasonable doubt.

They spent the money on Chase Anderson. In any event with the Bailey and Breslow pitching brain trust we dont need guys who ever were good pitchers; they can turn almost anyone into an all star.

I nailed the $25 million/year but AZ only has to give him 2 years and the 2nd is a beating option. What an absolute embarrassment this is for this ownership group. You weren’t willing to do something like this? What a joke.
You're aware that the PLAYER makes the decision on where to sign, right? It's possible that he simply had no interest in signing with Boston.

So Monty gets a deal that's about $6m more a year than Giolito? This team is so disappointing.

Credit to Hazen though. He's having a great 12 months.

Sure, and you may be right. But if that was truly the deciding factor for the number of players that this statement has been applied to this offseason, then the organization still has a serious problem on its hands.

I’m seeing it another way:

1) Boston was never going to pay $25m for him after giving Giolito $19m to not throw a pitch. JH drew that line in sand
2) Breslow simply didn’t value him as a $25m per year pitcher, no matter what the contract
3) He never wanted to come to Boston in the first place. Maybe a dude from South Carolina simply likes a more laid back place like TX or AZ, instead of the pressure cooker of NYC or Boston?
4) I’m almost positive he left a shit ton of $$ on the table earlier in offseason an he and Boras fucked up big time.

I think a deal like this made sense 1-2 months ago. Sox went into the spring with three guys (Houck, Whitlock, and Criswell) competing for two spots, and all three of them had tremendous springs (maybe four but Winck never really seemed like a contender). So why wouldn't you develop those guys and spend the money later when it's clear the window is now?

I still would have liked JMont on a 2 or 3 year since I do think the window is a lot closer than people think (with three big-time prospects at AA and Casa/Bello/Whitlock/Duran/Rafaela/Grissom all just starting to pay off in the majors). But things changed in the last month.

Re: 3) Disagree. I'm sure he'd love to have slept in a big bed with his wife.
Re: 4) Agree. Waiting seems stupid in hindsight since so many teams made other plans (including BOS).

I think he and Boras almost certainly overplayed his hand. Find it hard to imagine he didn’t have $100M+ offers on the table earlier in the offseason.

I had lost hope that the Sox were going to sign him but this is still disappointing.

The Sox didn’t have the budget to sign him. Why pretend it was something else- it’s always been the $$$, all offseason long, no matter how else we try to spin it.

Whatever. Off-season is over. Time to play ball and out all the nonsense of the past few months behind us.

I think this is probably a truth a lot of folks don't want to hear. Boston sports is not worth the headache (fans and media make it way too personal) and the city kind of sucks to live in if you're a millionaire compared to other options (tho Phoenix isnt exactly Wonderland). Unless the Red Sox blow a guy out of the water I can't imagine it being a top destination for most players.
