Even if he doesn't play a game, I think Rose to Memphis is a good signing (assuming money is short). He is a Memphis guy, and a good locker room guy. Will be great for Ja to have around

Curious: who does the Port Cellar have as the ugliest contract given out today? Kyrie? FVV? Jerami Grant at $150M?
It's gotta be Grant. As much of a time bomb Kyrie is you wouldn't be able to recoup anything, and Van Fleets contract is relatively short.

Guys like Brown and Van Fleet got paid so the teams reached the salary floor. In a vacuum they are overpays but not really bad contracts for those teams. Grant’s is just bad to keep Dame happy.

I would say a pretty close heat between Kyrie and Grant. Both were unnecessary, in that the teams were not competing against a market. I get the Kyrie resign but the third year option is bonkers. I have no idea what Portland is doing. I get the Dame angle but Grant is obviously not enough. They have to go all in for Dame or blow it up.

So I was listening to Keith Smith's show/recap and he threw out that Grant is fine as a contract (probably true) so long as it helps you keep Dame if that's your plan, but that the plan is unclear.

He threw out Reggie Jackson as one of the deals he didn't get, felt he was a clear minimum guy who got the tax MLE with a player option.

The complicating factor for many people is how teams are adjusting to the new CBA. I know the details are out there but what we don't know is how teams are going to adjust to the new parameters while at the same time raking in more money via the upcoming tv deal.

In short, Its hard to really value judge these deals without more information.

Seconded. I'm hesitant to judge any of these deals. I'm not sure we even fully understand how the dynamics of the new CBA will actually shake out.

Honestly I thought we'd see a drop in the J Grant type deals, more in the 12-25 range. Guys getting pulled up a bit from the 10ish range, and guys getting pulled down from the 30ish range.

Per @Cellar-Door the NBA Front Office Podcast with Keith Smith is pretty good at giving context to these transactions. Its not the most lively discussion but the analysis is very good.

Do these contracts for Kyrie, Bane, Haliburton, etc. make the Jaylen haters feel better about Jaylen getting the super max? It feels like a 26 year old Jaylen Brown who has gotten better every year as a Celtic is a pretty good deal going forward at the supermax.

Doesn't really change my opinion. Supermax is a lot more than the max, and.... these guys are good, both Bane and Haliburton are WAY ahead of where Jaylen was through the same number of games, they're both clear max guys Jaylen wasn't.

Jaylen is going to get supermaxed, it's arguably an overpay, but not a terrible one and it has to be done.

I am so curious to see what the Spurs are planning, though I think there's a 50% chance they're just going to run it back with the guys they have and see what they've got.

Given that the Spurs and Rockets are unlikely to sign him, there really doesn't seem to be any Grant money left out there.

He and Reaves are going to get absolutely boned.

I know I harp on this ad nauseum but the two guys who are about to get totally screwed are each represented by agents with single-digit client lists who don't have another significant player in their stable. Coincidence?

Lakers are putting 4/$52m in front of Reaves which may be the contract of the summer for any team and I'd imagine Grant ends up in a similar place.

There’s been some speculation Spurs could be in on Reaves; roster-wise he fits but I think Lakers will match anything.

They have to spend somewhere-but I’m sure that FO has a plan.

certainly a threat for Grant and PJ as well

Is it just me, or is the rest of the East taking steps back so far? I guess Milwaukee is mostly intact, but if they lose Brook to Houston, things get rough.

Josh Richardson signing with the heat for a minimum contract is depressing…
One of my favorite players when he was here and a guy that I had hoped the Cs could get on the cheap this year. Instead he signs with the friggin heat:(

Replacing Strus minutes with JRich is a draw for $60MM less.

When the Heat bring Derrick Jones Jr back on a minimum I'll laugh

I believe Grant & JRich have the exact same agent.

RFA is also working its annual salary-depressing magic

Have we heard on PJ Washington, Thybulle, Dosunmu yet?

I don't think I agree, in the context of the Heat's offense. They really need a high-volume movement shooter like Strus, or else they become a ton easier to cover. JRich is good at some things, and can shoot open 3s, but he doesn't have nearly Strus' gravity or movement behind the arc.

Ha! Well there ya have it. These kids have a small window to earn a lifetime of income...and choose a junior college over an Ivy League school. Makes little sense.

maybe it revives Duncan's career? I suspect Strus/Vincent won't have the same success elsewhere. Spoelstra wrings every ounce of talent from these guys.

Also like JRich's defense more than Max effort

My fear is that they are clearing salary — trading Oladipo while letting Vincent and Strus walk — to go whale hunting.

Eric Kolb I believe, worked or works for Bill Duffy, I think? He was my old business partner's brother-in-law

As much as we poke fun at Klutch, seems like they had a good day yesterday (UTA buying Klutch, probably sharpened them up)

I dunno....both are entering great situations especially Strus. I love this more for Cleveland as he was the weapon that their sometimes anemic offense was sorely lacking.

Yep, I think you're right. They can replace Strus/Vincent on the cheap & pick up Dame (or another whale) when they shake out

Are we sure Strus is good? In his 3 years with playing time he has shot 34%, 41%, and 35% from 3. In the playoffs he is a career 32.5% from 3. At the moment he has one outlier year as a shooter that is supposed to be his greatest strength. I don’t think he is terrible but the guy seems overrated.

It‘s out of character. For all of Riley’s many strengths, one of his weaknesses has been handing out bad second contracts to the players he’s discovered (Whiteside, Robinson, etc.). He also reportedly wouldn’t put Herro on the table in Beal talks, so he’s in position to package him with Duncan’s contract as ballast and most of their picks as sweeteners.

The #s kind of bare this out. In the 2 years where Strus wasn't shooting 41% on 3s, the Heat have been significantly better with him not on the Court (including a -9.1 on/off this past year). They were slightly better with him on the Court in the 41% year (+0.7).

Good/bad. Prying Jimmy from a direct competitor for JRich was a HR.

BUT you're right on the Duncan contract & that may have influenced him on "Strus/Vincent 2023 playoff euphoria!"

Right, he's a below-average defender.

Strus heat checks when he is sprinting off screens to take fadeaway 3s, can't be erased from my mind. While the announcers are amazed by the undrafted marvel.

When you're paying for POINTZ, they should be more than 10ppg

Yup, this. At his best I think he's like prime Evan Fournier, but he a 6 year stretch where he averaged 17+. It's gonna be nice seeing them (him and Vincent) turn from undrafted marvels to overpaid benchwarmers.

Jaxson Hayes to the Lakers, apparently for the vet minimum. Seems like LA has decided to blow out the budget for LBJ's last season or two as a Laker. Every time I think "well, now they definitely don't have money for Reaves," they sign someone else.

I don't see Hayes having any more of an impact on the Lakers in 2024 than Bamba in 2023.

Anyone feeling too bullish on the Lakers entering next year can just remember that the Lakers were incredibly lucky that Lebron and AD made it through the entire second half of the season and 3 rounds of the playoffs without serious injury. This was just the 2nd time in 5 years that AD was healthy at the end, and Lebron has to age sometime. Outside of the other LA team, they have the least reliable stars of any contender in the league. Assuming they re-sign Reeves I like what they've done so far, but none of it matters if/when AD breaks down for the 500th time or Lebron decides he can only play once a week.

Is Strus (at $16 million) even better than Osman (~ $6.7 million), whom they jettisoned to make room for Strus?
