Yes, Mac is not good right now. BUT - I do think he's taking far too much heat for problems that he neither created nor can ameliorate. He's kind of a douche which doesn't help but sometimes that makes it hard to separate performance from douchiness. And then things veer into people criticizing him for other players drawing false start penalties and running weird routes and not knowing where they should be on the field.
To me, Mac is like a team leader in a company of like 75 employees. He was brought in to lead the star team (the offense) and he directly reports to like 5 managers above him (coaching staff), and then there are company-wide leaders (Kraft). Mac's team had a pretty good 2021, some in the company weren't sold on him or the team he inherited but things turned out ok and there was a lot of reason to believe this would continue. Then in 2022 there was a controversial big shakeup in the 5 managers which led many to question their competency and direction. Mac is suddenly tasked with getting the same results from his team but with entirely new directives, from incompetent managers, it's not making sense to anybody, and it's not the job Mac signed up for. He was told his team was going to develop app X which was like one he made before, but now they want him to make app Y which is a dubious product his team is not suited to build. Moreover, some of the people on his team who seemed to do their jobs adequately before are now being exposed and in some cases cannot even complete tasks to do their jobs. Mac gets frustrated and relays this to his managers, who tell him to just get app Y done. Not surprisingly, Mac's team sucks and is now underperforming relative to 2021, especially since app Y was flawed anyway. The sharks who didn't like him in the first place say "see I told you so". The 5 managers have their own heat to deal with and are fine (in some cases) at pointing the finger at Mac and his team. Mac's team does not want to get fired for their incompetency (which is only due to management) so they are happy to point at Mac as a problem. The leadership team is aloof from Mac's team because the 5 managers manage that connection in their favor because Mac doesn't have direct access.
So I can see how Mac takes heat but he's really just a team leader. A cog in the machine.
Anyway it's Friday before the holidays...
