Man, defenders really are supposed to be magical in how they tackle.
Coming down on the QB with your full body weight is a black-letter no-no. Maybe that’s not a good rule, but unlike the hit on Brady yesterday, the official made the correct call.

Horrible call but not even the worst roughing call this weekend.
We have seen two RTP flags thrown without a pass actually being thrown.

I assume the flag was for dropping his full body weight on Carr, but what about the possession of the ball mid-play?

Howard Cosell is rolling in his grave.
Howard's legacy has been unfairly stained. He used to call his own grandkids "little monkeys"...the man was an advocate for Ali when it was decidedly unpopular. It's a shame people assume the worst.

Yeah that's been the rule for a few years at least. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

that Brady call though...yecch.

To be clear, I don't think that Cosell intended to make a racist statement about Garrett.

Where in the actual rule is that? I just re-checked and I don’t see that anywhere. You certainly can’t, as the rule puts it, ‘unnecessarily’ drive the QB into the ground, among similar actions. And Jones does try to brace himself with the left hand as he falls to the ground, and whether the defender braces himself is mentioned in the rule as a factor in evaluating otherwise timely hits.

By the contrary view, any tackle where the defender lands on the QB is roughing. No way.

I don’t like the call but I really dislike how calls like this take over the narrative of games

When tackling a passer who is in a defenseless posture (e.g., during or just after throwing a pass), a defensive player must not unnecessarily or violently throw him down or land on top of him with all or most of the defender’s weight. Instead, the defensive player must strive to wrap up the passer with the defensive player’s arms and not land on the passer with all or most of his body weight.

Carr hadn’t just thrown and wasn’t in the process, so by that rule he wasn’t in a defenseless position
Yes, but I think the NFL has been treating any QB who is not attempting to run the ball as essentially in the process of passing.

I too wonder about the ball coming loose negating any possibility of a RTP penalty. Is CFB Rules in the house?

Also, there's this 2018 piece from The Ringer.

Pretty soft OPI penalty imo. Chiefs did similar or worse on the Kelce TD (and all the time besides that).
