Shaq Mason traded to Bucs for a 5th round pick

Also, why would the Pats trade Mason to save $7 million only to turn around and take on Collins at $10 million?
Perhaps, and I'm just spit-balling, they like Collins more and/or want another tackle so they can kick Wynn inside.

Edit: Or they are trading Wynn and need another tackle. Or Trent is going to be too expensive and they are re-configuring the line. Or they are just freeing up space to pay Allen Robinson and there are other moves coming. Or...

Brady will restructure to give them a break. (Just kidding).

I didn't think too hard about it a the time but is weird that they spent so much last year when this was always kind of what would happen and for a team that at the time had a very questionable QB situation. I still like a lot of the guys they got (even Jonnu) but you could have left just a couple of those guys out there, filled those positions with other guys for less guaranteed money, and been in much better shape moving forward after you found a quarterback. They had a close to best case scenario happen at QB, but how often does even the best rookie QB make a deep playoff run?
I always assumed last years spending spree was mandated by Kraft in a fit of rage after Tommy won another. Just seemed so uncharacteristic.

Maybe they think that tackle is a bigger need and aren't thrilled with the tackles available in the draft, but they think they could find a serviceable guard in the 2nd or 3rd?

C'mon, they already re-signed James Ferentz; problem solved!

But seriously, this leaves them with the following O-Line depth chart:
Andrews (starting C)
Wynn (presumably starting LT -- but do they move him to LG?)
Onwenu (RT? LG? RG? My guess is that he ends up the starting RG.)
Herron (his second run late in the season was much better than his first, does that allow him to lock down LT and move Wynn inside?)
Cajuste (finally healthy but seemed pretty mediocre)
Durant (had one good half at RT)
Ferentz (let's hope he remains as the backup C/G combo who never sees the field)

Re-signing Trent Brown would help a lot.

If they use a first round pick to draft a friggin guard when they have severe needs at LB CB and WR I'm going to be pissed.

Is Mason good anymore? He had a pretty lousy stretch last year, though seemed to improve as the entire unit did later in the season. I think that might be the question to ask.
I think this is likely they key issue. I think we generally thought the Pats o-line was pretty good by the end of the season and Mason particularly effective in the run game, but he's not cheap and almost 29 so it may be that BB sees him as being on the decline.

Maybe they see Will Sherman or the Canadian guy as an immediate option? Got to say I'm a little puzzled.

Hard to imagine they'll go with a free agent at IOL though unless it's a real minimum salary tupe guy.

He’s won two SB and has gotten paid. Maybe his enthusiasm for the game is waning and BB knows it. Marpet just walked away at a similar age. Maybe in his 50 years of coaching ,BB has developed the ability to see subtle changes in attitude/drive that are tell-tale indicators that it’s “all downhill from here”. Should go without saying, but there could be a lot we don’t know.

As so often seems to be the case, why BB does what he does is a mystery to many/most of us here. But except for 1999 and 2020, his Patriots teams have always been good. The guy isn't stupid. He makes mistakes - everyone does - but he's not stupid.

They won't be hung up on position though. If they grade the BC guard, or somebody else as the best available player in that slot, that's who they will, and should draft. And decent depth at those other positions should trickle down to the second and third rounds. As well as available values in free agency/trades, after the initial spending spree has calmed down. BB has always viewed roster-building as year-round, multi-faceted project. Getting too upset over one move in a vacuum has usually proven to be reactionary and short sighted.

Agree it seemed odd, but I actually think it was bit longer arc in mind as BB had to know the investments wouldn't all work out:
Year 0: Spend metric @#%& ton of cash
Year 1: See who sticks/sucks
Year 2: Make the tough calls, eat the shit money, invest $ with long term in mind (young players or short deals)
Year 3+: Win leveraging the now financially well constructed team, with limited dead money, and a still cheap-but-good QB.

So…

QB is decent to solid
RB group is good
WRs are blah
TEs are solid with some upside for more
OL is now kind of shaky

DL is blah to decent
LBs are complete unknown
DBs are blah
S is a solid group

This team sure does have a lot of holes right now before the draft with minimal ability to spend in FA.

I think part of last year's spending also was that they had nothing on offense, the most important thing about last year and this was seeing what you had in Mac, what he can do what he can't. You're better off eating some mediocre money year two than not giving him enough talent to evaluate him.

Also they were right about the market... Zay Jones got 3/30 Christian Kirk got a minster deal..
They're got a steal in Bourne and arguably below market already deals for Agholor Jonnu and Henry

There really have been only a small handful of departed players that I looked back on and said "What a mistake it was to let him go". Asante Samuel was one, Deion Branch was arguably another, but I struggle to think of others*. There were some other players that had a couple of years after they left Foxboro, but none really stand out as having haunted the team or its fans. I do think part of the angst here is that the return for Mason seems light.

* - OK, there's Brady, but that discussion has long been settled and not worth relitigating.

Guess it depends, there were good reasons for it, and we ended up eventually getting Thuney out of it, but Chandler Jones is certainly a guy who left and was even better at his next stop

I’d probably add Chandler Jones to that list too.
They played in 3 straight Super Bowls and won 2 right after they traded him. They got Thuney in return. I can’t agree with this one.

Edit: whereas they struggled mightily to replace Asante, and losing Branch cost them 2006, arguably. Even Vinatieri I am ok with considering how well Gost replaced him, although I do wonder if BB would have kicked the FG in the Scottish Game.

I am a big Chatham fan and Johnson looks legit, but it's also using a huge piece of draft capital to fill a hole the team just created themselves by trading their starting G.
But they can then use the cap savings to fill the other.

BB has won more games, more division champsionships, more conference championships, and more Superbowls than any other Coach/GM in the NFL the last 20 years — and likely over any 20 year period. I feel like they are going to be okay this year. They will win 10-12 games, will make the playoffs and compete as far as their (2nd year) QB and defense can take them. Just like very year.

I'm sure the plan three days into free agency is to get to September with no playable offensive linemen. The goal is to get Mac Jones killed, you are correct. The NFL Draft has been cancelled and there are no other avenues to add players.
Don’t know where I implied that things aren’t going to change between right now and September. Just posed a lot of questions as to what direction the thought process is heading in at the moment. I know there are obviously things that are going to come to fruition before training camp starts but they’re difficult to see at the moment. I would suggest adding more content to your responses and less sarcastic derision to a knee jerk reaction to a puzzling move made by our favorite team.

Zion Johnson is one of my favorite prospects this year and a total fit for the Patriots. I wouldn’t say he’s just a guard. His OT play wasn’t great but he flashed enough in his one year that I wouldn’t rule out him eventually settling in there. They also have played OTs their first year at OG before like Cannon. Johnson might be a little short at 6024 (six-two and a half inch) but he has 34 inch arms and smooth footwork. He’s also 310+ pounds and tested out the gym. I’m not saying they should definitely take him at 21 but he would fit and if they think he could take over an OT position by year two that’s good value. If he fails at OT you probably have a near pro-bowl caliber guard.

Thanks for this, SMU. Hadn't been thinking about the versatility and this talked me in off the ledge a bit. And since going OG/OT at 21 would certainly be on-brand, really appreciate your assessment of both the player and the fit!

If they are committed to Zion, I would think they could trade down if the option is there and still get him mid to late 20’s

How would you compare him to Wynn coming out? Because Wynn was also a OG/OT prospect who was picked 23, and while he has been a decent player when healthy, he’s far from a stud.

This doesn’t make a lot of sense right now. I’m hoping there’s another shoe to drop somewhere. Are they trying to get Mac killed? Both starting guards gone? Possibly RT too? Wynn has been less than good. They needed to add to the o line. Is this Patricia starting with a clean slate?
Well, there obvious is. They are clearing cap room for a reason.

Also Welker, Vinatieri. But it's over 20 years now, and the number of people who found success post NE is pretty small.
The guy they replaced Vinatieri with was better, and Welker was replaced by Amendola for 3 extra years. Tough to call those big mistakes.

Amendola was fine, but I think it was Edelman who ultimately replaced Welker.
Amendola was signed the second free agency opened, which apparently Belichick hadn't informed Welker of lol. Then Welker went to Denver. So, he was signed as the replacement slot receiver. It was over something like half a million a year, too. BB and Welker were really close, but Welker wouldn't budge that last inch and BB pounced so nobody else signed Amendola. I remember the signing blowing everyone away.

It’s not like they have a ton of cap space now even after getting Mason off the books. Isn’t it likely that they will use most of their space up bargain hunting to fill all their open spots prior to the draft, so that they are not forced to draft for need? That seems like pretty standard m.o. for Belichick.

My fingers are still crossed that they get more than a 5th for Mason.

This year year feels like a bridge year to me with a goal towards a larger free agent presence next year. Mac will be in the third year of his rookie contract and a lot of salary will be coming off the books.

Edit: Mason’s cap hit for next year is $8.88 million.

We definitely overpaid, which is why Belichick cut his salary almost every year.
Because Edelman ended up making Amendola largely redundent, not because Amendola was bad when they needed him to produce. It was only an overpay in resource usage, not in skill.

@tims4wins I thought Wynn looked better at OT but Zion also had a much different path to becoming a pro and is extremely technically advanced for a someone who didn’t really play until much later in life. He is probably as good as Wynn coming out as an OG prospect on average depending on who you ask. Overall I think Wynn was the better prospect coming out because he had better tape at OT. Again I’m not saying he’s the slam dunk pick at 21 or even in the first if they trade down but it would make some sense. I’ve written about him before and he fits everything they look for in OL.

I would have liked more in return, but big picture I think BB did a full evaluation of the team and decided that they were not close to being a contender.

I think he might be tearing it down to the studs this year and building from the ground up and looking a year or two into the future.
But how do you reconcile Belichick "tearing it down to the studs and building from the ground up" with Belichick also re-signing 36-year-olds Brian Hoyer and Matthew Slater, 34-year-old Devin McCourty, and 30-year-old James White?

Belichick works in mysterious ways and is the best coach of all time. The last time we traded a Guard to the Bucs for a mid round pick (Mankins in 2014 for a 4th and Tim Wright!) it worked out pretty well, but of course that doesn't mean this one will be similarly successful.

I'm trying to withhold judgment on this trade until the rest of the offseason unfolds... but at the moment I can't say I feel better about the 2022 Patriots than I did about the 2021 Patriots.

Resource allocation, sure, probably could have deployed those resources better. And yet I seem to recall a few plays where having both on the field at the same time produced some pretty important results.

Ps I still hope they did better than a fifth. A FIFTH?!?
This is what surprised me too. A top 20 guard on a reasonable 2 year deal who is scheme versatile only got them a 5th? I was expecting a late 3 but figured it would be a 4th at the worst. Pick 170 you’re lucky to find a role player or maybe a quality STer. Sure they needed the cap space and hopefully they can slot Onwenu into one of the guard spots (he’s a better RG for imo) but that’s such a paltry return for such a good player. My guess is IOL isn’t a premium position and they needed cap space so didn’t have much leverage.
