kinda a worst case for the Astros, didn't work any of hte bullpen guys and wasted Verlander being fine in all but one inning.

Wow, Astros didn't show up tonight. I think they're in real trouble.
Why? Baseball games are pretty much independent events and Houston's pitching is still in decent shape. The Yankees are going to need someone to pitch next game and its not as if they are loaded with front-end starters.

and yeah, this is why the Nats can give either of these "juggernauts" a real fight. neither is playing on all cylinders right now.

I know Tim McCarver is a blowhard is an announcer, but he did have a long career as a player and played in three World Series -- including 1968, when the Cardinals blew a 3-1 series lead.

I saw an interview with him once and he said St. Louis played with no urgency in Games 5 and 6 because they assumed Bob Gibson would win Game 7 like he did in 1964 and 1967. They thought he was unbeatable. They didn't hit in Game 7, Curt Flood misplayed a fly ball into a two-run triple in Game 7, and Gibson, who pitched well, lost.

It looked like Astros played this game like they just wanted to get on the plane as fast as possible. Chapman didn't even break a sweat, and he's the sweatiest human since Patrick Ewing.

I don't know what "playing with urgency" means but Aroldis Chapman is a very good pitcher, as you know, and he is trying just as hard to get hitters out as they are to hit him. As you also know, the probabilities generally favor the team in the field each AB. I mean, perhaps you are correct and Houston took this game lightly, however I am not inclined to believe a team that features so many players who have been there before plus a very good manager did that.

Strawberry's razor suggests that the Yankees pitching overwhelmed Houston tonight. That doesn't mean they are going to win but if you tell me that the Astros are in trouble, needing a single win with two games at home, its tough to buy. And their pitching is in way better shape. Sabathia wasn't going to do much this series but the Yankees lost a veteran arm who has pitched in these games before. If they pull this off, they are going to need some Leskanic-type heroics. Houston just needs to win one game and they have an ace in the Cole.

I was driving home from LA last year during game 3 against the Astros. What a terrific listen that was. That JBJ grand slam following Moreland getting beaned was next level excitement.

The Astros window to win is right now. Cole is gone next season, Verlander will be 37, Will Harris is a free agent, decisions need to be made on Correa and Springer long term. They’ve got options in the system, but nothing that will immediately replace Cole and an aging Verlander. They can’t choke this opportunity.

Whitley had a rough year but is still an elite prospect. Tucker had a pretty promising debut for a 22 year old. they will lose Cole but I dont think they are gonna be small market team

and yea, the As are solid but not some dominant force. the rest of that division is trash.

The A’s have 4 SPs they mostly didn’t have all season, Manaea, Montas, Luzardo and Puk, and they won 97 games mostly without them. They look quite loaded.

ahh i forgot all about luzardo. regardless, i dont think the Astros window is closing, they have tons of money and some solid young talent.

Yep, Cole will be a big loss, but they won a World Series without him already, and Verlander may be 37 but he was still a top 2 AL pitcher this year.

Looking at their team, it looks like their window will go through 2021, Springer/Brantley/Gurriel are FAs after 2020, and Verlander/Greinke/McCullers/Correa/Osuna after 2021.

Astros: .178/.275/.302 16 Runs Scored
Yankees: .199/.275/.363 17 Runs Scored

I think we’re going to see a wild, back and forth 10-9 game tonight, The dam has to break eventually for both offenses.

Starting Cole on three days rest is already risky but using him with that layoff and in a game six gives the Yankees a huge advantage if this series goes seven.

The Astros are doing what they need to here - they have two games at home to win one. And if they have to rely on the game's best pitcher in the deciding game, it favors them.

Do you think that NY has any regrets about keeping Stanton on the ALCS roster and keeping CC as long as they did? Take out the emotional attachment to CC. Were there better options?
