It’s the third or fourth time I’ve been there, and it gets better. Good, homey food (I had the bouillabaisse special and it was fabulous) and good local beers and Washington wines.

JERRY: Where did you eat?

RUSSELL: Pfeiffer's.

JERRY: Ah. I know the chef there.

RUSSELL: Yeah. The food's usually terrific.

GEORGE: My cousin worked for Bouchard's. They used to use the bouillabaisse for a toilet.

AN EVEN DUMBER PACKER PLAY. While Brandon Bostick of the Packers is taking the blame and being made the scapegoat for the Packers loss, I would like to mention a play and penalty early in the game that ruined a great opportunity to put the Seahawks in a deep hole. Seattle’s first offensive series, third play, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix intercepts and returns the ball to the Seattle 4. Packers DT Mike Daniels goes out of his way to taunt Seattle players and draws a 15-yard penalty. So instead of first-and-goal from the 4, it is now first-and-10 from the 19. Packers settle for a FG. At least Bostick was making an attempt to help his team; Daniels was not. I’ll take Bostick’s mistake any day over Daniels’ personal choice.

—John O., Missouri

You can’t think that a 15-yard penalty in the first five minutes of the game could be the biggest negative play of the game for a losing team. It’s not even close. The Daniels’ play was boneheaded, but a tight end who is supposed to have good hands and who muffs a bouncing ball that goes right through his hands is a far more significant play than the dumb penalty in the first quarter.

God, King is dense.  And then he goes on to refute an argument John O. didn't even make.

Bostick wasn't supposed to try and catch the ball.

He doesn't even get that part right.

Only the most important NFL writers work out instead of watch big press conferences. It must be nice to be a mouth piece and not have to do any actual work. I wonder if he even writes the stories any more.

That really is incredible. This is top news for CNN, Fox, Today Show, etc., Brady is about to talk, and Pets decides it's time to go for a jog.
He might as well just turn over to Goodell his Twitter password and login to the SI CMS at this point and take a vacation for a few weeks.

I think King sees this as a chance to get off of Belichick's shit list.

Well, today we get this:

The conclusion: There is little doubt the New England footballs were tampered with by a human.

But later, we get this:

That’s why I believe it’s important to draw no conclusions, until significant evidence has been unearthed.

All of which was preceded by this:
I asked you on Twitter late Wednesday if you’d prefer a Friday column on the events surrounding the Deflategate controversy in New England or an on-field football topic. You overwhelmingly voted football. I am writing this morning primarily about the Patriots’ football story. My current plan is for most of my “Monday Morning Quarterback” column to focus more on non-football-deflation topics, but today the story is too fresh, and too important, to ignore.

It makes no sense that he would include this sentence once he decided to ignore the people who reached out to him on twitter.  It's beyond obtuse.  Why thumb your nose at your readers so blatantly?

If the Fifth Eatate were so tenacious about other issues over the 50 years, we literally would have been saved years and years of war.

Why is this the issue they are trying to force us to care about?

Precisely because there is nothing really at stake.  It's all upside.  If they're wrong, the only ones who look bad in the end are the Patriots, anyway.

Why do they write stories about belichick's demeanor at press conferences instead of about football? It's easier.

That's a funny one....  Okay, so here's what I want you to say....  No you put it in your words but these are the important points you need to include....

He should remove him self from the media in this situation. He has not been covering it fully, he was at the gym during the first BB press conference. Can he even call himself media anymore?

Keep in mind that the NFL has never said it is an investigation of the Pats---only into the balls used by the Pats.   In terms of the NFL's statement Friday, it's equally reasonable to conclude the investigation is about damage to the Pats as cheating by the Pats.

This is relevant because when Peter King says he's just 'covering the story' its worth asking whether he's actually doing so.   Has he published as much about which side was harmed and did the wrong acts, or has he assumed the Pats did the acts?  Because the NFL investigation he says he is covering hasn't taken a position on that---so if he has (or if his writing indicates only one perspective) that's him, not 'coverage' or the NFL investigation

If he was "covering the story", all he would have been able to say is:

"All we know so far is that some balls used by NE were under inflated. This is being investigated. No info on how or why."

That was the entire story until about 5 hours ago.

And you just fucking know he (and others) will always speak if this incident as if it's a shady mystery.

"Back in 2015, Belichick was widely accused of engaging in a plot to deflate footballs to his team's advantage. While he made a memorable statement of denial, and the NFL investigation ultimately was inconclusive, suspicions remain and the fact is we will never know exactly what happened."

It's funny, because Peter King really is a perfect match for Roger Goodell. Neither one could keep their fucking shoes on without Mom's help if they were velcro and came with an instructional video. This should have been mana from heaven for King. If there's two things we know about King, it's that he likes being an insider, and he doesn't really report for shit anymore. All he had to do is keep his fucking mouth shut, put out some tweets about rushing to judgment without all the facts, and spend next week's MMQB writing puff pieces about DMC's Walter Payton MOY Nominations and whatever the Seattle equivalent is, and he might have reopened some locked doors in Foxboro by way of laziness alone. Unfortunately his love of sanctimony trumps all of that.

King's biggest flaw is that he acts like he's a card carrying member of the NFL Club, along with the players and execs, and doesn't understand that he never will be; that they only make him feel like he belongs, like he's cool, because they then use him as their needs require. Meanwhile he's doing a disservice to the people who actually look to him for insight. He's literally corrupted. Shitting on New England fans for calling him out for being wrong when we desperately needed him to be right is just a prime exhibit of this.

Ya, sorry for holding you up to your own phony standard, Peter. Next time we will know ahead of time that you don't REALLY give a shit.*

Cameron Crowe made a movie warning about this exact phenomenon called "Almost Famous." Of course, that movie centered on an impressionable teenager. Peter King is an old fart who exemplifies the term "sell out".

* I knew this years ago, but apparently lots of others didn't. I don't blame them.

“Back in the seventies, the Dolphins were going to play the Raiders in Oakland. They practiced at the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday, and in the locker room Larry Csonka found laying there the Raiders’ game plan for the next day’s game. He gave it to [Dolphins offensive line coach] Monte Clark to give to Don Shula, which Monte did.
“The next day the Dolphins got beat by the Raiders. Csonka went to Monte and asked, ‘How did we lose? We had their game plan.’
“Monte’s response: ‘I gave it to Don and he threw it in the trash. He said, ‘We do not cheat!’ ”

Four hours and 56 minutes. That’s how long the flight was from New York to Phoenix on Sunday morning. That is also how long I had to smell the over-ripe woman in the seat behind me. I have read about people who have the problem of very strong body odor that is not controllable no matter how often they wash. I have no idea if this was one of those cases. Whatever this was, it was five hours of my life I will not remember fondly. Well, I guess I should look on the bright side. It’s an easy, though odoriferous, travel note of the week.
You should look on the bright side too: Now you have a fun word to share with friends, who will be so impressed if you use “odoriferous” instead of simply “stinks.”

I bow this morning to the six full-time SI photographers laid off the other day, all of whom I’ve worked with, all of whom take such great pride in their work—Al Tielemans, Bill Frakes, John McDonough, Simon Bruty, David E. Klutho and Robert Beck. A sad day for us.

I bet most people know the word "odoriferous" from the Right Guard commercials back in the day where noted luminaries such as Hulk Hogan and Brian Bosworth used the word in a humorous attempt to show how smart and cultured they were.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2784o1swxv4

Sadly, PK is not using it in such a way, he honestly thinks that using it makes him smart and cultured.

No. He's referencing the Seinfeld Junior Mint episode. It's the episode where Kramer and Jerry are watching a surgery and Kramer is eating the JMs. He offers one to Jerry, he says no and it ends up in the guy having the surgery.

Kramer couldn't understand why Jerry didn't want the JM, "They're very refreshing!"

Top stories of the week

10. The amazing health of the two teams Sunday. Ever been a time when all 106 active players were healthy and practicing all through Super Bowl week? I doubt it.
So, if you ignore the players who have already been lost for the season (Mayo, Richards), and those guys who suffered big injuries two weeks ago (Sherman/Thomas), or have not played in a month (Stork), everyone is healthy. Got it!
