Only took on a little bit of money with the Urias deal, so the Sox won't end up paying any in luxury tax, right?

Sale is broken waiting to happen. Whitlock was only great when he was handled with kid gloves in his first year with the Sox. Feel free to continue to defend Bloom, but counting on guys that haven't been there all year, can't stay on the field, or get lit the third time through the order isn't having a bunch of all stars coming to save the day.
Guessing you wanted Paxton declared legally dead back in March?

Right. But that never stops the “just do something” crowd from screaming because they are bored.
I, also am bored.

I'm also pretty surprised Duvall is still on team.

But strap in, August is going to be interesting.

It seems like as a GM you get killed in the press and by fans for inaction but fired for action (actions that don't go well, at least). Fans always want the team to do something because it's more interesting than doing nothing, and sports is entertainment. I'm good with the cautious buying Bloom appears to have done this deadline. The team is not bad as constructed with reason for optimism.

Man, the extra playoff spots have changed so much. In 2004 this team would be 7.5 games back and automatic sellers.

They're on the roster, what do you propose that Bloom should do with them?

You can’t not have faith they’ll make the playoffs and in the same breath say you love this roster. Doing nothing seems terrible (granted I’m on 100% sell as I don’t think this team makes a WC spot by at messy 3 games(

In the end, standing pat probably makes sense- the season will likely be determined by what they get from the guys on the IL. My biggest concern is getting there- next week may be make or break: need to avoid disaster in Seattle and vs the Jays. But not sure any deal would have had much of an impact there.

They are also likely going to lose some decent players when they have to activate all these guys off the IL / 60, but probably not much of a market for whatever they were willing to move.

I’ll just say THIS team, the one currently suiting up, is a borderline playoff team that you could add to but it probably is just an a more expensive way to fall short of a title. The team we could have in a couple weeks could be a dangerous one… and I’m not sure we needed to add much to that hypothetical squad.

I just don’t understand standing pat. They should be selling likely, but if not, do something to add to the team. Can’t say I have been a huge fan of the Bloom era to date.

I've always loved to see a team built w/a young core, etc. Personally, I mostly like the current approach.

BUT, this is a major market with really high ticket prices. The fanbase at large is going to grow impatient, and that will translate to ownership becoming frustrated with Bloom.

At some point, people need to see a creative move that makes the team better for the playoff run. Bloom's comments are not going to resonate well at all with the fanbase and media - I know most posters don't care, but it will impact ownership's view on things.

it’s been reported by numerous sources (Ken Rosenthal being one) that the Sox could have got a premium return for Paxton.

Chaim chose to keep him. I’m not arguing whether that’s right or wrong but they could have got a large return for Paxton (my guess is that it would have been incredibly similar to Verlander)

Exact quote from Rosenthal “ "The big question revolves around James Paxton, they could get a premium package in return, but the Red Sox would need to replace him somehow."
A Paxton trade to a contender that sent some high level minor league talent would have to involved a third team that is out of contention. We would have sent those prospects or similar level prospects to that team for a bona fide starting pitcher to replace Paxton, perhaps with another year or two of control.

So you just do nothing of substance? Makes no sense.
I don't understand why this is difficult to understand.

The goal is to win the World Series as many times as possible before you die. It's not remotely clear what path is best for that, and quite frankly, the error bars on all of this are big enough that there might not be a definitively better path.

We're clearly a pretty good team while also clearly not being in the top tier of teams. That's going to be a troublesome spot to be in for any team in any sport.
