Well, he's 37 and everyone loses it at some point. I'm all for giving him a shot, but given what we've seen so far and the fact that they're in a playoff race, he'd better show something fairly quickly.
Kluber went from the best BB/9 in the league last year to below average this year. It should be clear pretty quickly if he's back to 2022 form or not depending on whether he's throwing strikes.

If he were theoretically available today, I'd replace him with Jacques but no one else since he can at least pitch multiple innings in blowouts. If they add something and have Schreiber back and everyone else healthy, maybe they eat his entire salary and see if any team bites. He should beat Whitlock, Sale, and Houck back, but his days are numbered regardless.
Kluber seems like someone the Cardinals could use once they trade away half their pitching staff next week. There's value there. He can soak up some innings, maybe aiding in some light tanking momentum, and prevent them from starting the clock too early on any of their SP prospects. Certainly wouldn't bring back anyone of interest.

Kluber seems really well liked in the league. Maybe this kind of thing could be a more respectful off-ramp than a DFA? OTOH, a DFA would allow him to choose where he'd end up.

I've wondered if he was nursing an injury for the first half of the year and just didn't tell anyone for Ballplayer Reasons. But that's idle speculation that helps no one.

Hopefully he's got his control back and can be useful in a bulk role because even reduced velocity Kluber with good control is a useful pitcher.

What's the story with Story?
A Tweet posted here yesterday said Story would be with the team starting Friday.
Was that referring to a different Friday or perhaps a different team?

He's in Portland starting his rehab assignment. Starting at SS. Walked & scored a run in the 1st.

Thank goodness. I wouldn't have minded Alfaro being bad as much if he'd been more fun in the process. But if there were any highlights I think I missed them.

""Alex Cora said postgame that Trevor Story will not be activated on Friday. He did not rule out activating him on Saturday or Sunday, but apparently Story wants (or needs) another day or two in the minors before feeling ready. Chris Sale's next rehab start is Sunday, and it could be his last. Cora specifically said there's a chance Sale could be activated next week." - Chad Jennings, Athletic

I just don't get it unless Story isn't ready to play nine innings at short. If this is about seeing more pitches, he was a better offensive option before he took a single swing on his rehab assignment. Chang's removal from the lineup can only make the lineup better.

I think what went unsaid is they want to see how Story reacts to playing back to back games, particularly playing a day game after a night game (full games each) which he did today. Assess how he feels tomorrow and go from there. No sense getting ahead of themselves and promising he'll be activated Friday. Maybe they'll change their mind if he feels good enough.

More rehab action coming soon:
https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/08/02/sports/when-their-injured-starters-return-red-sox-are-considering-taking-page-giants-playbook/

Sale will pitch for the Woo Sox on Sunday, maybe 4 innings:
The starters are getting healthier. The Red Sox could get Chris Sale back for next weekend’s series against the Tigers. Sale, who pitched in a rehab outing Tuesday in Syracuse for the WooSox, will pitch again Sunday for Worcester, again in Syracuse.
Houck will pitch for them on Saturday, and Whitlock could also pitch there Sunday:
Tanner Houck (facial fracture) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Saturday for Worcester. Garrett Whitlock (elbow) could pitch Sunday for Worcester, too. Sale threw three innings Tuesday. He’s scheduled to throw four innings Sunday.
The club isn't sure what their roles will be. They are thinking about maybe using Houck after Sale:
For instance, if Sale went three innings, Houck could give the Sox four innings before handing it off to Chris Martin and Kenley Jansen for the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
Story will play at least one more game for the Woo Sox, possibly more:
There’s still a chance Story will join the parent club over the weekend. Story has checked most boxes, according to the club, including throwing from shortstop.
The team has centered its focus on getting Story reacquainted with playing on consecutive days.
He played in a day game Wednesday after a night game Tuesday for the WooSox, going 1 for 5 with an RBI double and three strikeouts.
Sounds like Turner will be back for the next game, "hopefully":
Cora said he’s hopeful Turner will be back in the lineup Friday.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been more indignation over the frustrating Trevor Story timeline. He is planning to stay in AAA for the maximum allowable time. That, despite his .967 OPS in Worcester and Yu Chang posting a .167/.167/.333/.500 slashline over the past week. Do we really believe Story can't improve on that right now? Or that the risk of a physical setback is that much different between AAA and MLB? I guess maybe there's a rationale that hinges on not playing too many consecutive games in the field, but it's pretty clear that his team needs him sooner rather than later.

He's going to come back and rake for the last 10 games when the Sox are long since out of it, right?

Would anyone complain if he was signed to a minor league deal with a chance at making the roster as a backup MI?

I feel like there's no real reason to complain about them signing anyone to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training and a chance to earn a spot on the big league roster. (edit to add...well, maybe not the problematic types like Trevor Bauer or something)

I think it would be pretty difficult for Mondesi to make his way to the active roster this year. He’s a FA to be, activating him off the 60 day DL would require dropping someone else, someone who would theoretically at least have a chance of being part of the 24 team. But yeah, minor league invite seems like a reasonable offer and can’t imagine he will be in position to ask for more.

I have zero issue with any player taking what they believe is the necessary amount of time to rehab. Beating up on AAA pitching is all fine and good, but its main usefulness is in allowing Story to get some semblance of his timing back with little pressure to win the game. Same with his fielding. We've seen too many guys rush back and either suck or get hurt again.

Story's still not ready to play back to back games in the majors. People need to understand that and not whine when he sits out alternating games for at least the first week. I wouldn't expect him to hit much at all for a bit as he gets acclimated.

https://theathletic.com/4757603/2023/08/08/trevor-story-red-sox-return-grand-slam/

Story is still building up stamina in the field, so the plan is for him to play every other day in the field for the time being while also mixing in some days at designated hitter. Next week, he hopes to start playing back-to-back games in the field.
“Rather than, go every other day in Worcester again,” he said. “It’s kind of my goal to be ready to go (Tuesday) and go every other day here for at least this first week.”
“A few years ago, he was one of the best defensive shortstops in the big leagues, I don’t think that has changed,” Cora said. “It’s a matter of him getting repetitions. Obviously we have to protect him. Don’t be surprised if in the beginning it’s one day, one day off, one day, one day off until we feel like he’s a full go.”
He wasn't feeling 100% on the days after playing. Probably still doesn't. Hopefully that stops soon.
Story was allotted the normal 20 days for rehabbing players, but for an injury as significant as his, the build-up, particularly playing in the field on consecutive days, proved to be a challenge. He did so this past week with Triple-A Worcester, but didn’t feel 100 percent in the days that followed. He tried pushing himself, but also didn’t want to risk further complications.
He's not having to hold back on any of the throws:
“I think I’ve checked all those boxes in practice and in games down at Triple A,” he said. “Got some of the hard ones out of the way, some barehanded plays, on the run, backhand, spinning throws, all the things that I like to do on a normal basis. So I feel really good about all the throws, there’s not one in particular that I’m like shying away from or anything like that. That’s a big part of this process. I need to feel that way if I’m going to play the way I know I can.”

It is unbelievable how toxic the legacy Boston reporters are on any outcome outside of perfection. It's insane Trevor Story is going to play nearly 2 months this season and not only is that not good enough for Shaughnessy, but he is mocking a player who has clearly worked his ass off in an effort to get back this season. It's pathetic.

I honestly took it as an opportunity Shank chose to slag Manny yet again. He was big on the "Manny would rather be in Pawtucket" train back in the day.

When was the last time a baseball writer of Shaughnessy's generation offered any sort of insight or exclusive reporting?

All he has left is bile and his legacy of racism.

I mean, he said "more" than Manny, so it seems like he's attempting to slam Manny again, & slam Story even harder. Either way it's sad & kinda creepy, though.
