Very little outfield depth. It makes a ton of sense.

Adding talent on low risk deals. Gotta love that. All that said, he is the definition of an "unknown"

So who's being dealt--JBJ, Nava, or Carp ?

Well, Carp did want more playing time, right? I'd be shocked if Sizemore makes it out of Spring Training healthy, anyway.

If Sizemore manages to stay healthy they can always start the year with JBJ at Pawtucket while they figure things out.

Here is either a very low cost insurance policy on Bradley or perhaps more prudently an insurance policy on whatever disappoints in the Gomes/Nava/Carp/(Victorino injury time) rotation in the outfield and bench opportunities.

Very little risk potentially high reward.

O/U on games played = 5. Just a ridiculous amount of injuries beyond the knee issue which has been the main thing keeping him out.

Surprised he got an MLB deal, but not my money.

Here
A reasonable person could make the argument that the Red Sox got more handsome in Center Field this year. When you look back at last year, who ever would have thought it possible?

Now THAT'S the way you steal the headlines back from the Yankees.

Who goes from the 40?

Brayan Villareal is my guess. He's out of options anyway.

It's not the money that's the risk it's the 40 roster spot. Somebody of value has to go now unless there's another move afoot.

I like the signing: high risk of injury, but higher ceiling -- the perfect 5th outfielder, provided there's an emergency 6th stashed in Pawtucket.

Van Everyman, your time will come again.

He never shoulda visited the Ellsbury locker. There are lingering traces, and they're contagious.

Obviously this is Ben throwing a bone to the pink hat crowd in the wake of Ellsbury's departure.

Sadly that bone was Sizemore's.

Edit: apparently *my* time came sooner than you thought, Sprowl!

I mean, maybe you luck into a 2-4 win player. Maybe he shatters his face in ST. Regardless the price is low enough to give him a look, especially considering outfield depth is the weakest part of the system.

Hard to dislike such a low risk move, but according to wikipedia he has had microfracture surgery on both knees (yikes...), back surgery, elbow surgery, and 2 groin surgeries.

Have to put the chances of him being useful this season at less than 50%. He probably has the knees of a 60 year old, and likely is well on his way to a couple knee replacements.

Cherington hinted at more moves yesterday:

Cherington, appearing at the "Hot Stove Cool Music" roundtable at Fenway Park on Tuesday night, also said that he will find out — like everyone else — which team lands prized Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka later this week.

“I think it’s likely we’ll add to the roster," said the GM. "Whether it be in the form of a major league deal or a minor league deal remains to be seen. But confident that we’ll add some players before spring training. We’re actively working on that now.

Carp seems very likely to be the one on the move, if they are confident in Nava playing a competent backup 1B.

Ideally he'd win the everyday CF job.

Damn Sox are always trying to one-up the Yankees.  I figured with Brian Roberts signed, there was no way the Sox would be able to compete with the Yankees on the "most-fragile-player" front.

I was wrong, so wrong.

What a zero risk move (unless you are really scared we will lose Villareal).

There is a probably very low chance that we will leave spring trading with Victorino, Gomes, Ortiz, Napoli, Nava, JBJ, Carp, and Sizemore all healthy.

The difference being the sox have a young cost controlled top 30 prospect ready to fill in at CF, and the Yankees have........... at second base.

It's a dice roll with zero downside. If his legs fly off his body the team will move on like nothing happened.

According to a source close to Sizemore, his only regret is that he has...boneitis.

Any news on his (most recent) recovery? He has been off the map so long I'm not even sure what he's coming back from. Regardless, certainly is interesting with a lot of upside potential.

With modern medicine, I like to think that the rehabilitation of often injured players is becoming more effective and exceedingly rapid. I also think Ben and company aren't in the business of burning money, even 750k. There's a good chance they feel very confident in his ability to be a decent player again, while other teams prematurely wrote off the idea before considering Sizemore.

As an aside, with this coming on the heels of the Tanaka signing, I'm guessing the 40 man roster spot opening comes through the trade of one of our surplus starting pitchers. Won't be long now before Garza, Santana, Jimenez et al sign somewhere.

While this may be true in general, it is not necessarily true for every injury.  All injuries and rehabs are not created equal.

Of course I have no inside info, but just on the surface, multiple knee surgeries on both knees including bilateral micro fracture surgeries is serious stuff.  There are no modern medicine miracles to regrow cartilage (yet).  Not only does he have numerous potentially unhealable injuries, but they have kept him from playing baseball for 2 years.

For 750K, sure, it's not my money.  Obviously it's a tiny risk, and the only reason you can get someone with his upside for that price is because of his injuries.  But thinking he has a good chance to contribute strikes me as pretty damn optimistic given his history.

This was my first thought. Plus, maybe he's been fixed. . ., I hope.

To make room for Sizemore on 40-man roster, reliever Brayan Villarreal has been designated for assignment #RedSox

And just generally speaking it's considered good practice to do everything you can to make a young guy think he's in tight competition for a spot in spring training, certainly up to and including bringing in a low-cost veteran on a long shot.
