Andy Brickley's potty mouth
Cant we go to a 9 man tourney and pay off 1st and 2nd?
Yes, but that would require me to create a new contest and have everyone sign up again. I can't cancel the first contest, so that would have to stay open.

I can certainly do that, but I'm not confident everyone would sign up in time to the new contest and it might be confusing.

If we can't find someone and have to cancel, we have to cancel. No biggie. (The bad news for me is that I can no longer do anything from work, since it's in NY.)

John Daly playing this week. Because of that I put together a lineup, selected him, and entered it in other DK league.

He's currently my lowest scoring performer.

That sucked. Probably my worst scoring week ever--I finished like 8000th out of 11000.

All I can remember of my drafted team before it was cancelled was finau (winner) and fathaeur (T21). Wish I had time to have swapped into into one of the regular DK leagues.

Yikes--that same roster had Cjelka WD after first round.

Just a head's up that DK is offering a free Masters game--first prize is $300. It's listed for "beginners" but I qualified so perhaps our private league doesn't count against us, so throw a lineup in there.

Looking through the players, not every entrant is listed yet.

Ha, I'll take being likened to Stenson. The man is a 2nd-place earning beast. He and I will find ourselves in the winners circle again eventually.

Plus his caddy smokes butts all up and down the course during play, which I find endearing.

Among the betting favorites: 5 lineups have Day, 3 have Mickelson, 2 for Rose and Stenson but only 1 for Scott, Bubba and DJ and no one with Rory, Spieth or Fowler.

So if I don't have Day or Mickelson I might in trouble. Man, I hate rooting against Phil.

Schwartzel also in 3 lineups.

...or maybe not. (Not a single birdie from Langer today; I'd have been much better off if he'd started the day 5 or 6 back, I think.)

It's hard to prove a counterfactual, but I think I might have enjoyed this year's Masters much more had I not been involved in our league. And that has little to do with my amazing fade from first into third place today; I just feel like rooting against most of the field and for my gang of six goes against how I normally enjoy watching golf tournaments. Maybe fantasy sports just aren't for me - I was in SoSH's English Premier League fantasy competition a few years ago and dropped out of that for similar reasons. (Actually, sports in which the fantasy experience leads you into rooting for micro-transactions that have little to do with the sporting competition itself are rather worse than golf for me; at least this league leads you to root for stuff that actually matters in determining the outcome of the competition, rather than being pissed the wrong guy scored the touchdown/run/goal/etc.)

Anyway, I'll keep playing in the league until my initial £50 deposit has disappeared, but I really don't know if I'll renew at that point. (Just to be perfectly open and transparent about this.) I am curious, though, to ask those of you with much more experience of fantasy golf - and specifically DraftKings competitions - whether my impression that this was a particularly fluctuating competition is correct. It really felt to me like the standings were changing every hour, let alone every round.

I don't really get the feeling of DK making a tournament less enjoyable. It's generally such a small wager that I find it makes me more interested in watching but not overly concerned if I lose because someone has a great tournament. In fact, I even felt a little warmer toward Willett yesterday because he helped me win money when I picked him for my team at The Open last year. Frustrating weekend to be the only player in our league have all 6 guys make the cut, then watch Na give me negative points on Saturday and get so little from 2 of my top 3 salaries in Scott and Reed.

As for the fluctuations, this did feel like a less predictable tournament than most in that you can usually depend on players who have made the cut to continue playing well and generally keep adding to their point totals, albeit with some difference in degrees and changes in the position in the leaderboard. Augusta just played so tough for so many that you could see players plummet unexpectedly and others move up just by grinding it out. As always, so much of the action that effects your personal outcome is never televised.

Yeah, it's $5 or $10---that's not really making me change my rooting habits all that much.

It's not so much the money as the OCD-type anxiety I feel in suddenly having a specific reason to track and watch a bunch of players throughout a tournament to whom I might otherwise have no allegiance. Maybe I'm just set in my ways with regard to how I watch sports and would rather let storylines evolve naturally, rather than force my own narratives upon them.

Shit, sorry guys I didn't sign up. Long day of work yesterday and I thought I had until 8am today.

There are still 3 people that have not signed up for this week's contest...
Not sure what happened to me - I sent in my lineup on Tuesday and after I entered I used the same lineup for two other contests. I'm now listed as being in those contests but not this one.

DraftKings fail.

That's because this week's SoSH contest got cancelled, as only 8 of the 9 invitees submitted their entries on time.
OK, I feel less confused now. (I was absolutely positive that I joined our league contest and was a bit freaked when I didn't see it in my contests this morning.)

I will point out that I'm in the money in my other two contests, so the week is not lost. [/humblebrag]

Yeah, well, I've currently got two entries in the top 150 in the standings of the contest with the $100,000 first prize. (Kuchar/Hoffman/Donald/Knox/Kelly/Simpson, and Day/Hoffman/Donald/Kelly/Love/Simpson, not that you care.) And I fully expect to win nothing. :)

FWIW, I thought I'd really throw myself into DraftKings this week and pretend I was a proper gambler for one week - I did quite a bit of research and also created an Excel spreadsheet that allowed me to cut and paste all sorts of different lineups together featuring the 20-odd golfers I fancied. In the end I submitted 10 entries, eight to the $3 entry/$400K prize fund event and two to the $1 entry/$15K prize fund event; six are comfortably in the money, and two are just outside. It's been much easier this week for me so far than last week, actually, insofar as a) I don't feel compelled to watch every second of television coverage of the non-majors, and b) with multiple teams at stake I don't really know who to root for or against yet. But if I'm still in the running for the big prizes come Sunday afternoon, I may have to take a long walk or something.

(The idea in my head when I did this was that I'd write a column about the experience, by the way. But the next 48 hours may change my mind...)

Those big contests are so hard--hundreds in there are going to have 6 guys make the cut and if you don't you have no shot.
