I don't find this argument valid. Pick one of the worst 5 relievers on the 40 man. They are all replaceable.
This seems to be a recurring problem, first with soxeast and now here. I ask who to take off the 40 man roster and the reply is "you decide".

That's not how this works. If you want Brentz or someone else on the 40 man roster you need to identify the corresponding roster move.

At least I know you won't suggest DLing a healthy player!

I think I'll look at say soxpropsects analysis of BT rather than seek your opinion on BT. And yeah guys like Judge who strikeout a lot-- real relevant point you made there. I guess when I hear how teams now pack their lineup with power and don't care as much about strikeouts, I'm supposed to care about your analysis? For example, ofc we know Steamers is accurate for predicting every player (sarcasm). HAs Steamers predicted CY's current folly? SO we're supposed to think it is somehow valid now? Especially when I said "give BB a try for a short term," but I didn't say I'd cut CY?

Thanks!
So do you honestly believe any sample size of at bats represents the true talent of a player? I believe it measures the true performance over that period, but the actual talent requires hundreds of at-bats to stabilize, depending on the stat. It takes around 900 at bats for batting average to stabilize, for example. Chris Young has 94 this year against Lefties. Do you think his year to year split stats are because he varies wildly in talent level from season to season, or because he has a talent level that has most likely increased and declined following an aging curve like every other baseball player ever, and the sample sizes for each season has been small enough that the results are closer to random than predictive?

I'm not going to beat this to death any longer after this, but I've posted my thoughts on this multiple times in this thread. Yet this question of "who comes off the 40 man?" keeps recurring with no rebuttal. I don't need to identify a singular corresponding roster move: there are multiple fungible back-end MRs on the 40 man. There is no reason to keep them all if the FO believes Brentz holds any value (for this year or next), which it now appears they don't. My personal opinion is that he does hold a greater value than all of Boyer/Hembree/Maddox/Taylor, and I've previously posted why I think this. A MR with options has value, yes, (I believe it's not as great as Brentz's), but that value diminishes when you have 10 relievers better than that guy and/or 10 other guys who are of similar skill and value. Any of those MRs are pretty easily replaceable by the others, another ml MR next year (are Ramirez/Olmos/Shepherd/Jerez any different from those on the 40 man?), or in FA this winter.

There may be reasons not to add Brentz to the 40 man, but not being able to find him a spot on it because "who would you take off?" is not one of them.

Yeah, you do. There have been just as many posts here defending each of the back end MRs as calls to get rid of one of them.

There may be reasons not to add Brentz to the 40 man, but not being able to find him a spot on it because "who would you take off?" is not one of them.
If the Sox had 39 men on the 40 man roster right now there's a real chance Brentz would be added. Since they don't have that space, he hasn't been added, hence it is one of the reasons he's not there.

FWIW, Farrell on WEEI said that other than Travis, the other callups are non-entities; Lin and Swihart were specifically mentioned in the "only if we're way ahead would we look to get them into a game" part of the "we're totally focused on the pennant race" speech.

Like I said -- who would I agree with your analysis or soxprospects? Not even close.

You do know the guys at soxprospects are just message board posters like all of us, right? I'm probably more informed than them when it comes to players in Portland because I get to see more games. Hell, 90% of the SP guys are on this forum too. They aren't some infallible source of prospect news and they get shit wrong all the time. They'll even tell you that themselves. Tell me what the SP guys said about Garin Cecchini, Will Middlebrooks, Allen Webster, Anthony Ranaudo, etc.

Edit: Not to mention the SP guys have differing opinions of prospects among themselves. I can find some pretty glowing reviews on Ben Taylor on the SP forums with little effort.

I'd have thought that the eighth inning of an 11-1 ballgame would count here. I thought the whole point of September call-ups is to give them a few stray innings here and there to rest the regulars?

Agreed. I was surprised not to see Swihart catching the last inning or two. If for nothing else, just to give Vazquez a little rest.

So was I. Maybe he wanted Vazquez's opinion on Smith's stuff?

OTOH, I think that putting Maddox into the game with the bases loaded was done with a purpose. My sense is that Farrell sees a bit of 2013 Workman in Maddox. (obviously workman was up longer, so the comp isn't perfect).

Not that it was planned for Smith to have no command. But Maddox necessarily had to warm up quickly and come into a tight spot. I doubt the score made any difference to him. I think he's moving up Farrell's leverage ladder, especially since neither Hembree nor Barnes has been especially impressive the last few weeks.

Noo- not the talent of the player. But Where did I address “talent?” On this thread alone – there have been 3 other times there has been implication I’ve said something but didn’t. Another thread someone did the same thing.

1—Implied that I want CY cut two times from 2 different posters but I never said it. Instead I believe I implied or even stated I want CY on the team and want him at the end of the season.

2—Making a post sound like I thought BB was an automatic home run hitter though that post later was resolved.

3- After I reply to loseremerswaal that one option is for sox to let go of BT. He replies in the following manner:

I just want to make it clear I did NOT say BB was more talented. I said give BB some at bats and see what he can do. So why bring up “talent” when I said I’d only play BB in blowouts UNLESS he gets hot? I DO EXPECT LONG TERM CY TO OUTPERFORM BB WHICH IS WHY I NEVER IMPLIED TO CUT CY – which makes your point of bringing up “talent” TO ME puzzling. Why do you even bring up talent?

Anyhow, if CY was mashing the ball (or Hanley) there would be no discussion. But in terms of this site before my posts on page 2 – there were 8 other posters that felt BB should get a chance. So it’s not like I’m the only one that thought a few at bats for BB would be okay.

Other points/ questions- the poster identified Steamers in which CY and BB were pretty close. What would it hurt to see if BB might have been able to give the team a quick surge? I never said completely replace CY. But do you agree he isn’t performing well?

Anyhow, Do you think Xander, Dustin, Sale and Pomeranz can use some rest? Every game Sox win, it’s crucial. Thus the point anyone makes that BB MIGHT HAVE BEEN MINIMAL IMPACT. Sure. But for THIS TEAM a couple of home runs can ASSIST/allow a team that has good pitching but questionable hitting a game or two of extra rest. This team needs as much rest as possible, right? So every solo home run could mean a game the way they pitch.

I think we can both agree both of us don't value the other person's opinion much. I agree you know more than I for that I would have normally valued your opinion to an extent. IMO I'm sure you can be a great source of wealth of information. But IMO you get caught up in "the argument" too much. There was one post in which you might have implied (others did) that I wanted to cut CY THIS YEAR. Though you weren't clear-- so maybe you didn't.

With your current post to me above-- it seems like you are suggesting the guys who run the homepage are idiots because "they get shit wrong all the time." IMO the guys that run the page are not your average message board posters which you are clearly trying to imply here. That is ridiculous. Further to blast them the way you're doing is totally absurd. As was the poster Plympton or whoever the poster was -- if you had paid attention (or maybe you just wanted to keep the fight going with me with your latest post above) - he comepletely scoffed at the guys who run that site.

So for a fan like me-- I read on soxprospects homepage an evaluation of a player. If it what was I saw. And then even 2016 MLB has said about the same for Ben Taylor, imo it is extremely arrogant of Plympton to scoff at that in the manner he did. Your arrogance and his-- that's too much for me. My loss I'll miss out on interesting stuff you post in the future - but I'm putting you and plympton and loserremerswaal on ignore. I'd encourage you to do the same to me. You and plympton are toooo much. For remers-- how many times did me and another poster say we would say goodbye to a player like Ben? Yet he keeps posting as if no one said to let him go. He just "didn't want to hear" an alternative opinion. Anyhow below is the link for soxprospects evaluation of BT. I agree with it-- but they are wrong all the time? SO scoff at anyone who agrees with them? Really?

And btw, I don't agree with you at all regarding CY in 2013. He was terrible.
