I see Elias as the immediate 40 man move; Holt probably gets ST to show value.

Like it. Nice fill-in for Pedey, insurance against any Devers slump, RH bar for spelling Ben10 and JBJ. Versatile offensively. I was hoping they'd be able to bring him back in a reasonable deal. Also interested to see the $$$...

This is a good UT signing.

Last season we saw the best of Nunez. Next year I think Baseball Reference has it about right: 0.288/ 0.331 /0 .440.

Pretty good player.

Chill. Nunez is a fun player and a one-year deal is great value.

Wonder where this puts us in relation to the $237M secondary cap. And by extension, that other thing.

I know Marco was really going to take it slow. I wonder if his health sped up the Nunez negotiations.
The option year signals to me that Pedroia’s knee isn’t isn’t anywhere near where the team hoped it would be at this point.

His versatility defensively also allows us to both fill in for Pedey and after he returns give regular rest to all the infield starters without having to start a terrible bat.

People were upset that the Sox haven’t upgraded the lineup, but having a full season of Devers and Nunez is effectively upgrading hundreds of ABs that last year went to Sandoval, Holt, Marrero, and Rutledge.

Before his knee gave out, Nuñez looked like a perfect fit for Fenway. He and Devers added a lot of power to an anemic team.

I think that's an overreaction. Pedroia isn't young. Any injury could kill his career and it's good to have options.

I like it pending the details about the dollars but it's going to give us a lot less flexibility in the JDM negotiations.

Happy to hear this if true. Wondering if this suggests concern over Pedey but even if not there are plenty of AB to be had for him between 3B, LF, 2B , DH

1.8 WAR player should probably be getting more than the 8 million most expect on a 1 yr deal, but still leaves room for JDM or LoMO

I thought he'd be over 10 per - but then Kendrick signed for 2 yrs 7 total.
Gives me hope it'll be reasonable.

The first part is definitely true — and it may have already occurred. Micro-fracture knee surgery isn’t a death sentence, but it’s not a quick scope of some cartilage, either.

And the move sure leaves a lot of flexibility in the Tony Watson negotiations.

Agreed. They know Pedroia is out for at least the first 6-8 weeks of the season. Signing Nunez is more of a signal of concern of Hernandez's and maybe even Holt's health. They have to cover the gap until Pedroia returns first. The option year is probably part luxury tax hack and part a make-good deal for Nunez. If he has a good healthy year, he can opt for free agency. No way the Sox give him that option if they're concerned about Pedroia beyond this season and see Nunez as the best answer.

Love it! Was really hoping this was gonna happen. Nunez really sparked the team after his acquisition last summer. Eager to see what the $ is.

Good move. Nunez sparked the offense when acquired last year. Now go get Watson for the pen.

One could make the argument that this is a feature, not a bug. A small signing like this isn't the same as walking away or lowering the offer, but it's kind of like saying "we're getting on with 2018. Do you want a deal or not?"

OTOH, it could mean DD has concluded that the JDM ship has sailed and it's bound for Phoenix.

The cradle of the game.
Yeah, he was one of the few pleasant surprises last year, and if healthy and given the green light, can take an extra base (40 SB in 2016). Very consistent and likely won't fall off a cliff at age 31.

Doesnt this start and end with "he's better than Holt?" And also may be a signal that the working theory for now is for Swihart to be an irregular regular.

Him passing a physical is anything but a sure thing, I'm assuming nothing until that happens.

Is this a team option at reasonable money? If so, his knee must be carnitas.

Has it ever been disclosed just what the injury to his knee was, or if anything was done in the off-season to correct it? I mean he was carried off the field twice after failing to get out of the batters box. I think $4M is a great deal, but its hard to be confident he will be any healthier than Pedroia at this point.

He sprained a pcl ligament. It did not require surgery.

Fantastic news. 4 million is a steal and this likely means no wasted at-bats to Brock Holt.

No , but a team does not commit 4 million to player whose health is uncertain, at least not when they are up against the tax and penalties. So much of Nunez value is attached to his speed and any doubts at all would be a hard pass.

Given that no surgery was required one has to assume it was a minor ligament sprain. I'm sure they do an MRI as part of a physical to ensure all is well, as well as normal physical tests. 5 months after the injury he should be 100%. If not, no deal.

How long before the Yanks pick up Brock, watch him hit 15-20 HRs off the bench and listen to Kay wax poetic about the Sox giving up on a past All-Star?

That's not happening, but I do wonder if Cashman has his eye on how the catcher battle in BOS shakes out in spring training, as I'm pretty sure Sandy Leon would be an upgrade on the black hole of suck that is Austin Romine at backup C. Presumably Dombrowski would send him somewhere to try to keep him away from NY, assuming he doesn't make BOS's team, or maybe he wouldn't care.

I’m thinking that “The City That Never Sleeps” would not likely be beneficial to his vertigo symptoms.

Had already talked myself into being hopeful on Marco, but kinda saw this coming given the market squeeze and with it becoming more clear that JDM wasn't going to end up being in the cards here.

Great no risk signing out of DD at $4m (really?) which at least brings back last year's deadline upgrade.
