Miami (oh, Miami!)
It's kind of funny how people are trying to guess what Yamamoto wants and values and cares about, since none of us has any clue about that.
I think your greater point stands, but there are certain reasonable categorical guesses one can make. Say for example - YY is vanishingly unlikely to take the 5th smallest contract to play for an uncompetitive club who is completely indifferent to accommodating him.

We might not know the particulars of those categories, or how much he might weigh any particular thing. But I think a club probably has to be in the top 1-3 offers in several categories to have a serious chance.

I agree with this - but I've kind of always agreed with this.

The reasons (for me at least) are because Boston never made sense (from the perspective of this particular player), short of him being incredibly close to Yoshida.

If it was "just money" and went until someone stopped bidding, he's going to the Mets.

If it was about money and almost literally anything else (other than Yoshida) such as "positioned to win at the MLB level"; or "Japanese ex-pat community" or "proximity to Japan" then there is not one of those scenarios where the Red Sox make the most sense as a fit against the other main competitors.

I don't pretend to know what makes YY tick, but if he's anything like most athletes, one of those mentioned above would play at least some role if everyone is offering you $300+ million.
His agent told all teams not to place a bid. Bidding begins today. If the Mets offer $400M, good luck to them. I only care if he accepts the Red Sox or declines the Yankees.

So the day after he meets the Mets and Yankees are when terms will start being discussed?
And there has been no confirmation today from anyone that he went to Boston or is planning to after his NY venture?
I’d say that’s not too promising at all. But maybe we will get word otherwise in the next few hours

I mean, just last week a report had Ohtani in Toronto coming to terms with the Blue Jays, so some skepticism is warranted around reporting about where a player is or isn’t, or has/hasn’t been.

Regarding the translator being replaced. Why don't they let YY bring in his own and put him on the staff? I know there are limitations on who can be in the dugout in uniform, but it seems like an easy move to just bring in someone YY feels comfortable with. Didn't Dice-K bring his own interpretor, although I remember that translator had trouble with nuances of American english or something.
I think you are referring to the translator Matsuzaka used at his press conference. That man, Tak Sato, was not actually an interpreter by profession (he was chosen because Matsuzaka felt most comfortable with him) but instead a Japanese representative of Scott Boras' agency. This is why Matsuzaka's press conference was such a disaster, and a good example of why allowing players to choose the interpreter they are comfortable with is dangerous.
By definition players requiring interpreters do not speak English well, so their ability to gauge the interpreting skills of a potential hire is significantly hampered by this limitation. That said, I am concerned about this bit of news (Yoshida's interpreter being replaced) because it could very well indicate that Yoshida was not happy with the interpreting services that the team provided him - which would be a frustration that could end up passed on to YY. Ideally, we'd like Yoshida to be glowingly positive about all aspects of his transition to the Sox, and if instead he wasn't happy with his interpreter there might be some complaints about the Sox help with his transition that are being passed on to YY.

If I recall correctly, Yoshida had his own interpreter who was also a friend similar to the Matsuzaka situation that you referenced. There was some reporting on this, and I will try to find a link and relevant passage.

EDIT: Not a friend but the translator from the Orix Buffaloes

Boston outfielder Masataka Yoshida, who signed a five-year, $90 million deal with the Red Sox this winter, asked Keiichiro Wakabayashi, the Japanese interpreter for English players for the Orix Buffaloes, to come with him.

Link: https://theathletic.com/4581805/2023/06/06/mlb-interpreters-shohei-ohtani/

In any event, it seems like the Red Sox were not satisfied with Yoshida's interpreter rather than vice versa which could still be a sticking point. Especially if Yamamoto is also comfortable with Wakabayashi.

It's kind of funny how people are trying to guess what Yamamoto wants and values and cares about, since none of us has any clue about that. Just something to talk about I guess, but it's pretty silly to try to decide what his motivation for choosing one place over another would be and then extrapolate that this is why he will or won't be signing with us. We just can't know any of that.
Man I just got back from Hawaii to this god forsaken dark and rainy dystopia. What else do I have to do but speculate (though my priest told me if I do that too much I might go blind).

Sort of ... in. the poll thread, more than two-thirds of posters think he's signing somewhere else, so the pessimism isn't really sudden
Given the number of teams said to be in on him, that may actually be an optimistic sampling.

Well, don't I look like a dumb shit. Not my day
No you are 100% right, he took his quote way out of context.... he said "seem" and even hedged, that pretty much nobody knows where he is going to land.

This was from literally this morning

“The Red Sox and the Mets might be expected to make higher offers to Yamamoto than the Yankees but the Yankees feel pretty good about getting him,” Martino said. “When were the Yankees the team that’s like ‘We’ll get him but we’re not going to be the high bidder.” That’s kind of where it is now which is so different but that’s how it’s shifted.”

This is no surprise to...anyone.

The Dodgers have become the new Yankees - they seem to land whomever they want (I'm sure that's not true but it sure feels that way). The Yankees are still the Yankees. And the Mets are like Fredo Corleone - not nearly as good as Michael, but willing to shell out the huge bucks because they can and they want a seat at the grown up table.
If Boston is really out on YY, I feel like the Mets are acting more like Fat Clemenza, and the Red Sox are acting more like Fredo now (who thinks he's smart but is acting like a lightweight).

Oh..that also doesn't sound good. If Yoshida wants to keep Wakabayashi and the Sox don't, isn't that something they should discuss with him after all the free agent Japanese players that they are pursuing sign contracts? After all, any of them interested in the Sox are likely to talk to Yoshida (especially YY). I'm guessing that Wakabayashi isn't as good at English as the Sox would like, which was actually pretty apparent at Yoshida's press conference when he was introduced. I hadn't realized before that he had come with Yoshida from Orix, but that explains a lot. Generally, it seems like the interpreters working for American teams are more skilled than those on Japanese teams, but that really seems something that the team shouldn't take on now unless Yoshida is also frustrated with Wakabayashi.

2025: $45M

2027: $45M
**Player can opt-out, but team can nullify opt-out with 2028/2029 team option @ $45M/yr
2028: $25M -- Escalates to $45M if player finishes in the top 5 of the Cy Young voting twice in 2024-2027
2029: $25M -- Escalates to $45M if player finishes in the top 5 of the Cy Young voting twice in 2024-2027
**Player can opt-out, but team can nullify opt-out with 2030/2031 team option @ $45M/yr
2030: $25M -- Escalates to $45M if player finishes in the top 5 of the Cy Young voting once in 2028-2029
2031: $25M -- Escalates to $45M if player finishes in the top 5 of the Cy Young voting once in 2028-2029
**Player can opt-out, but team can nullify opt-out with 2032/2033 team option @ $45M/yr
2032: $25M -- Escalates to $45M if player finishes in the top 5 of the Cy Young voting once in 2030-2031
2033: $25M -- Escalates to $45M if player finishes in the top 5 of the Cy Young voting once in 2030-2031

Minimum Value: 10/$330
Maximum Value: 10/$450

Go fuck yourself, Cohen.

Probably really not that big of a deal. Team is always going to employ those that work best for the team, and Yoshida is aware of that. Doubt it has much influence on Yamamoto.

There hasn't much more than speculation in this thread, but I'm going to state some fact about the eventual Yamamoto signing. If Yamamoto signs with Boston, there will be a spoogefest the likes of which we haven’t seen around these forums since '04. If he signs elsewhere (particularly with the MFY) we will see a shit show here that will rival the last two seasons of the Bloom era.

Don't tell me that even "pursuing" in the thread title needs to be changed now?
no, Boston Strong editorialized what Rosenthal was saying to an absurd degree.... He never said "are favorites" Rosenthal even hedged that nobody knows who he is going to sign with

Look on the bright side, either way it will be highly entertaining.

I’m guessing it’s not a big deal because if it was they wouldn’t have pursued this at this time.
That said, these guys probably spend more time with their interpreters than their wives, so I don’t agree that it would be easy for Yoshida to accept a change that he was against.

What if old number 38 is his favorite pitcher and he seals the deal for the Sox?
Would the internet then cease to be?

There
Who’s SuperJoel?
The hashtag below reads "Super Joel." So guessing that's his agent, and he's happy with his work?
Apologies if I missed but didn't see it answered -- the internets say it's his agent, Joel Wolfe.

So the day after he meets the Mets and Yankees are when terms will start being discussed?

Way too many syllables.

Not sure when this was from but KR is certainly sounding like the Sox are still in on YY here:

What a weak ass take. We obviously don’t know the inner workings of the front office and the discussions being had but we’ve seen little to nothing that indicates we aren’t making a serious push at Yamamoto and I don’t see how you can reasonably heap blame onto them if they make a real offer and the kid just chooses another team. What other moves should they have made? What other moves were they in a position to make? Why are they being pilloried when their number one target, at least as it appears, hasn’t even made up his mind yet?

In short, Ken Rosenthal can get bent.

I won't click on Xitter, so I'd love a short summary of that post.
Red Sox are dorks of the week for not making any bold moves. Stupid take of course but to be fair, baseball writers everywhere are starved for material.

No new information was conveyed.

Here: I'm Ken Rosenthal, and I'm a jackass.

Referenced (appropriately) Tom Werner's promise to go "full throttle" to improve the club. Noted they haven't signed YY yet (true). Goes on to add (unreasonably) that signing Snell or Montgomery wouldn't be major, bold moves. He's going to pre-emptively assign the Red Sox as Dorks of the Week unless something major breaks.

Thought of this after @CalSoxGal 's post yesterday. I was going to try to find it and say, not all our Yankees fans comrades here are like these guys. Except Crow, obvs.
Ha ha! I guess I was thinking more about the fans like the guys in the gif when I rattled off my impulsive post yesterday. (Honestly, I really don't know who's a Yankee fan here or not, and didn't intend to tar all with the same brush.)

Anyway, aside from not wanting the MFY to get better, I hope they don't sign YY because he seems to be a likeable guy, and the kind of talent you want to root for and see succeed. And if he becomes a Yankee I will not be able to do that.
