That’s the best they could do?Lions in the season opener at Chiefs.
Agree. The lions were a fun story last year, and I get that many feel they will be a playoff team this year. But that game should absolutely feature a playoff team/contender from last year. The Chiefs have plenty of them on the schedule. That’s the best they could do?
Not sure how protections might work, but it's possible those games are locked in (just not announced) in other matchups. Everyone is gonna watch opening night anyway, so throw a fun second team on there.Agree. The lions were a fun story last year, and I get that many feel they will be a playoff team this year. They burned them last year with the Bills @ Rams. 2021 had Cowboys, always a big draw, @ Bucs. In 2020 they did have the Texans coming off an 11-5 season @ KC. And in 2019, they bumped the Pats in favor of GB @ Chicago to celebrate their 100th season. They aren't going to burn the Bills, Bengals or Eagles games week 1
The Bills and Chiefs have been the consensus two best teams in the AFC the past two years (notwithstanding better on-field results for CIN than BUF). Agree with @cshea that the league won’t burn Bills-Chiefs Week 1.They burned them last year with the Bills @ Rams. 2021 had Cowboys, always a big draw, @ Bucs. That was my first thought. Let’s put a bunch of shitty games on because we know people will watch anyways. That is a terrible day of football games on Thanksgiving.
The ratings won't confirm this. It's those games or Family TimeThat is a terrible day of football games on Thanksgiving.
It's three actual rivalry games though. And very possibly games that will help decide division (especially NFC West). I've seen way worse slates for Thanksgiving. That was my first thought. Let’s put a bunch of shitty games on because we know people will watch anyways.
Seems odd that all 6 teams are NFC.This is not set in stone, but it looks like the 2023 Thanksgiving schedule might be set:
Packers at Lions, 12:30 p.m. ET (Fox)
Commanders at Cowboys, 4:30 p.m. ET (CBS)
49ers at Seahawks, 8:20 p.m. ET (NBC)

I think if they put all the games up auction style to the networks, and perhaps that's what they are doing with this FA thing, Bills/Chiefs, Bengals/Chiefs and Eagles/Chiefs are 3 of the 5 most valuable games, perhaps even 1-2-3 in some order. I don't think they're in the same class as Bills/Rams last year or Bucs/Boys in 2021. The Chiefs games are all either rematches (SB and back to back AFCCG's) or a multi-year rivalry with Buffalo. Rams/Bills was just a good non-conference game among contenders. Bucs/Boys didn't have any recent history as they didn't play each other in Tampa's SB season.

Pats:
Hosting Eagles and TEB12 in week one
hosting Fins in week 2
"Houston-Denver.....September 30......going once......twice......three times.......SOLD.... to . . .Channel 109 in Melonville.....for 8 dollars and 12 cents......"On the other hand, if they divvy up/auction off/draft pick the schedule over one or two days and find a way to televise the process then everybody wins.
I mean, I'm likely more bullish than most on the Pats but is it a really a massive matchup based on consensus?Chiefs @ Pats on MNF on 12/18

https://www.nfl.com/news/2023-nfl-schedule-chiefs-patriots-among-teams-with-the-toughest-17-game-slatesThe Patriots' 2023 schedule is relentless. Pound for pound, this is the toughest opening quintet of any team this year -- and really, they might have the toughest closing five-game stretch, too.
