Christ, another 7/8 year contract. The financial engineering VC bros definitely think they’ve found an exploit.

That’s a real double ugh. First, as a Napoli fan, I was excited to see him in Naples. Second, as a fan of European football in general, it’s disappointing that such a young guy would go to SA.

what's Celta going to do with the money? They need to stay up this year for my boy Luca de la Torre, and of course for Iago Aspas who I absolutely fangirl over.

Apparently his wages are 10x in KSA too. Oh well.

They already budgeted for his sale in the financials they submitted to La Liga, and it’s hard to tell what they have left to spend. They always run pretty tight financially, but it looks like they had all new arrivals registered with Veiga still on the team so they should be able to bring some reinforcements in. Of course, Veiga earned peanuts so new salaries will be tricky. Celta did some good business this summer bringing in Bamba and Manu Sánchez both on a free. Luis Campos still plays a role at the club, so it’s not surprising that they’re make smart decisions, and I imagine he already had players in mind. It’s the clubs 100th birthday and Iago Aspas will not allow them to be relegated.

Hot rumors in the ex-Twitterverse are that Balogun will be sold to Monaco for a cool €45 million.

Not a bad place to spend your time.

FabrLzio Romano was reporting that Eden Hazard signed a 1-year deal with Palace.

There does seem to be some talk about this though.

Tierney is still a very good right back. Great at overlapping runs and crossing. He's just not a natural at coming into the middle and acting like another midfielder the way Zinchenko is. I'd expect him to have a good year at Sociedad.

Watching Sky Sports News simulcast on YouTube of their nightly transfer show. They have their Sky Germany and Sky Italia counterparts on the show, and the first question was to the Sky Italia reporter.
Q: "How are things going in Italy?"
A: Not so good. Saudi Arabia and PL are taking a lot of players from Italy. Italian teams can't get enough good players

Balogun to Monaco is looking done pending physicals. Who still needs a move from a USMNT pov? Cannon? Miles? Vázquez? Maybe Richards? Looks like CCV is hurt and will have to stay in Scotland for a bit.

I don't expect him to stay healthy, since he basically hasn't, but I hope he has a huge year and Arsenal can get a pretty big fee(relative of course) for him next summer. That's the best case scenario.

I do think he has talent, though not a fit in Arteta's system and just never stays healthy.

#1 priority is probably getting Richards somewhere he will get minutes. Palace's games this far have suggested he's CB4, not CB3, and he's a likely starter for our A-team.

Cannon is without club, but has several interested parties and I assume he'll land somewhere.

Here was my rundown on Scuffed a few days ago, pre-Balogun:

---
Anyway as long as we're going to be sitting here doing fanfic-style 'shipping of our players in the remaining days of the transfer window, let's have a check-in on our remaining top priorities. Feel free to argue with my list or bring up someone I'm forgetting:

1. Balogun, obviously
2. Richards - by acclamation. If he's CB4 at Palace, he needs to go somewhere he can play.
3. Cannon - like my lunch sandwich plans, he's without-club. Rayo was rumored, but they are *poor*.
4. Horvath - too good not to play, not good enough to play EPL
5. Tessmann - has Serie A interest, kinda bossing Serie B from what I can tell
6. Booth - rumored moves to Big 5 have yet to materialize, partly because he got injured on 8/12.
7. Pefok - he's on a good club, but is now 4th on depth chart. On the other hand, if he can't win minutes there at this point, does he even matter to the USMNT?
8. Steffen - back from the Boro loan, returning from injury in a month(?), isn't a part of City's plans, needs to find a Champo team or leave England.

Also receiving votes: CCV (to Big 5? Spurs?!), Johnny Cardoso (his time will come), and the "wait till after MLS season" crew (Miles, Ferreira, DeJuan Jones, Brandon Vazquez, Wiley, Cowell)
---

This off-season has been incredible for our top talents. Just about everyone who needed a transfer got it, and to a nearly ideal place.

One other thing @InstaFace I’d argue that Jordan Pefok is #5 on the depth chart with the arrival of Volland. I’m betting either he or Becker is gone, and I hope it’s Jordan.

Gabri Veiga to Napoli is off and Al Ahli have snatched him up. I was already annoyed that La Liga was going to lose a talent like Gabri Veiga because Celta Vigo absolutely need the money, but having a top young Spanish talent sold to Saudi Arabia is salt in the wound.

What a shame. Not only does La Liga lose a great young player from one of Spain's most historic sides, but he ends up going to a league and club that will do absolutely nothing for his development as a player for the national team.

Joao Cancelo to Barcelona on a loan with buy option. Barcelona needed a RB and Cancelo is a very good one.

I'm guessing Roberto's performance yesterday had something to do with this getting over the line today. I'm only half kidding. The other half of the explanation is that the La Liga FFP office is closed on Sundays.

James Pearce (the Athletic) with a good overview of the mess.

https://theathletic.com/4781314/2023/08/16/liverpool-transfers-caicedo-lavia/?source=user_shared_article

According to the article they DID check with the player - and were given assurances he would sign before making the Caicedo bid. So they were screwed by the agent which is some (Tiny? Minuscule? ) comfort.

But Pearce doesn’t really address the elephant in the room - Chelsea’s ridiculous contract offers. Both Caicedo and Lavia signed with Chelsea because they were offered stupid money.

Edit: I guess Pearce omitted this little tidbit because the focus of the story is on LFC’s front office incompetence .

Edit: in an interview Lavia said his decision was due to being made to feel “second choice” and not a bigger contract

Aside from the fact he was Chelsea’s second choice as well.

So he passed up first team football to rot on Chelsea’s bench because his feelings were hurt. Ok
Question about EPL FFP: Does it only look at transfer fees, or does it look at the wage bill as well?

Fair bit of noise about Amrabat as well. Is he a pure 6 or more of a hybrid?
Amrabat would be a GREAT signing for Pool. He probably has his peak ahead of him and he's a total workhorse OG. In case you've forgotten, he was a huge part of Morrocco's success at WC. Total engine guy with slick skills to boot. Barca were after him hard to replace Busi but it never came to pass because Barca are broke.

Supposedly the EPL is bringing its own FFP rules in line with EUFA’s . As I understand it, wages play a huge part and you can only amortize them over a maximum 5 years. So , a Caicedo 8 year deal at £240k / week becomes a five year deal at £384k/week as far as FFP calculates it. I think the overall wage bill can’t exceed 80% of revenues. This is a much bigger deal in the Championship where many clubs spend over 100% in wages.

Interesting from a law perspective for sure. You have regulations of different and sometimes (but not always!) overlapping orgs like domestic leagues, domestic FAs, and international orgs (UEFA, FIFA, CAS, etc.). You have some basic frameworks (e.g., FFP), but it's administered differently by the domestic orgs. And finally, you have different regs at the domestic level too (e.g., La Liga's registration rules). I should treat this as more than a hobby and become a consultant!

Nunes is going on strike at Wolves unless his transfer to City goes through. How will this go down in the history of strikes in the PL? More successful than the nurse/railway strikes?

Southampton play footsie with Everton over Che Adams a little too long and get stuck with him- Toffees score a coup IMO with a deal for striker Beto, of Serie A club Udinese-

Dude is a unit.

With Beto, young Portuguese striker Chermiti, Ashley Young, and loans for Jack Harrison and Danjuma, that’s…. pretty decent??? Young was not good on Saturday but as a guy who can cover both RB and LB he’s useful. Might not be enough to compensate for the struggles of Mykolenko and Patterson but surely useful. Another CB is needed imo.

Sincerely,
Every club's fans, during every transfer window, except like Spurs during the Alderweireld / Vertonghen era.

Like, PSV fans are in despair. Half the EPL needs defensive help. It's a good time to be a quality CB. And yet somehow, Chris Richards can't get a transfer to a place that will play him.

Probably part of why CDMs are going crazy at the same time. Can't get a good defender? Cover for the not so good ones!

I’m not sure if Ansu’s departure implies that Barca will sign another player — such as Joao Felix — or if Xavi plans to give the younger players more opportunities.

I wonder, too, if Xavi is making any mistakes in how he is managing the squad and having a hard time balancing egos.

Sky Sports is having trouble getting a picture of Gravenberch at the Munich airport to fly to Liverpool to take his physical. Can we help them?
