View: https://twitter.com/CBSSports/status/1495491006980100110Juwan Howard just punched Wisconsin’s coach after that game and had a full on fight.
I don't know. I think it wasn't that bad until he threw a punch. That took it to another level.I didn’t think it was all that bad. But obviously, it’s predictable that players are going to jump in to defend their coaches on both sides, which is why a coach absolutely can’t do what Howard did.
He’ll sit a few games, and should, but this isn’t Bobby Knight throwing a chair.
I edited my post. Basically, I didn’t think it was much of a punch.I don't know. I think it wasn't that bad until he threw a punch. That took it to another level.
Strong disagree, it was clearly a punch. That's how you punch when you have three people between you and your target.I edited my post. Basically, I didn’t think it was much of a punch.
And you don't feel that deserves a firing? The coach who represents the school and is supposed to be leading kids just threw a punch and escalated what could have been a full on melee.Definitely an open-handed slap by Howard, and it’s in response to a Wisconsin coach getting into it with a Michigan player.
Howard reared back - it was a open-handed punch. And he started it with jawing and putting his finger in the coach’s face.Definitely an open-handed slap by Howard, and it’s in response to a Wisconsin coach getting into it with a Michigan player.
Howard reacted to something that happened in the scrum between one of his players and one of the Wisconsin assistants. It wasn’t an escalation of his initial beef with the Wisconsin head coach. Of course he’ll be suspended, but I think there’s more to this story. And you don't feel that deserves a firing? His ass should be fired before they enter back into the state of Michigan
The scrum existed only as an escalation of his initial beef with the Wisconsin head coach.Howard reacted to something that happened in the scrum between one of his players and one of the Wisconsin assistants. I think he should sit for 3-5 games. That’s a stiff penalty by historic standards. The scrum existed only as an escalation of his initial beef with the Wisconsin head coach.
I’m actually not saying to fire him, but I think you’re minimizing his actions way too much.
I don't ask to be snarky but what is the last example of a head coach throwing a punch at another coach? I can't think of a recent historical standard for this. He should be done for the season.I think he should sit for 3-5 games. That’s a stiff penalty by historic standards.
If Howard threw a punch, that Wisconsin coach would be in a coma.I don't ask to be snarky but what is the last example of a head coach throwing a punch at another coach? I can't think of a recent historical standard for this. He should be done for the season.
I think I wish you had been charge of the Marchand appealI think he should sit for 3-5 games. That’s a stiff penalty by historic standards.
I think that’s exactly what’s going to happen to him.I don't ask to be snarky but what is the last example of a head coach throwing a punch at another coach? I can't think of a recent historical standard for this. He should be done for the season.
This is my understanding as well. That said, it’s a line a head coach cannot cross.I thought Howard smacked Krabbenhoft because Karabbenhoft had his hands on a Michigan player. Understandable, but also inexcusable.

Honestly, only thing I can compare it to is the famous Bob Knight chair throw.I think that’s exactly what’s going to happen to him.
Best case is that he sits for the remainder of the regular season. Worst case is that he misses the conference tourney and anything after that or he gets fired.
I don’t think he’ll be fired for a number of reasons, but it would absolutely be justified if that’s how they want to play it.
Yes I’m absolutely sure the upstanding white man did nothing whatsoever to make the angry Black man take a swipe at him.He had it coming? Is this middle school?
A leader of a program either punched or took a swipe at an opposing coach. With a bunch of athletes around. Those actions will escalate things. Lucky it didn't get uglier.
I’d rather the coach cross this line than have a player do it.This is my understanding as well. That said, it’s a line a head coach cannot cross.
Oh come on. There are plenty of places to bring race into the conversation and this doesn't seem like one of them. Howard crossed a line and he has a bit of a history with this stuff so people aren't piling on for no reason.Yes I’m absolutely sure the upstanding white man did nothing whatsoever to make the angry Black man take a swipe at him.
Look, I think this incident is less than a huge deal — Howard should miss a few games, and everyone else should just get a stern talking-to. But if it’s truly something serious, then let’s have a full investigation and get to the bottom of exactly what happened.
No one else has brought up the history, and I’m unfamiliar with it. What is it?Oh come on. There are plenty of places to bring race into the conversation and this doesn't seem like one of them. Howard crossed a line and he has a bit of a history with this stuff so people aren't piling on for no reason.
Exactly. What is Howard supposed to do — let the opposing coach lay hands on his player? Let the player defend himself?I’d rather the coach cross this line than have a player do it.
Listen, in a vacuum I agree with you and I might’ve done the same, but I’m not a coach and leader of students and when you take that position, there’s a different standard. Not saying the other coach shouldn’t be punished as well, but we see scrums all the time in all sports. You really can’t let your hands go. If you could, there’d be more examples of coaches going Deacon Jones.Exactly. What is Howard supposed to do — let the opposing coach lay hands on his player? Let the player defend himself?
The whole situation doesn’t happen if Howard isn’t a hothead, so he gets the largest share of blame, but if we really want to make a capital case of it, there were a lot of people acting inappropriately in that scrum.
Obviously not a huge deal, but this will be the second time in a year that he has had a pretty major run in with another coachNo one else has brought up the history, and I’m unfamiliar with it. What is it?
Can you provide any evidence that this happened?Howard reacted to something that happened in the scrum between one of his players and one of the Wisconsin assistants.
You keep saying this and I can't find any evidence of this. Howard hasn't said it in the stories I see.Howard reacted to something that happened in the scrum between one of his players and one of the Wisconsin assistants. It wasn’t an escalation of his initial beef with the Wisconsin head coach. Of course he’ll be suspended, but I think there’s more to this story.
During his postgame news conference, Howard said he didn't like Wisconsin calling for a timeout with 15 seconds left and the Badgers leading by 15.
Another angle--it has nothing to do with a Wisconsin asst. and a Michigan player:After the game, Howard pointed a finger at Gard while complaining about the late move. Later on, Howard reached through a crowd to get to Krabbenhoft — replays showed Howard no longer had a closed fist and had his hand open by the time he struck Krabbenhoft on the left side of his head.
It turns out the assistant put hands on Howard himself, not on one of Michigan players. Thought I saw a player engaged with that coach on the replay. Obviously makes Howard’s actions less defensible that one of his players wasn’t involved, since I can’t imagine he feared for his personal safety in that situation. Can you provide any evidence that this happened?
Stupid unwritten rules. I don’t understand how one team can continue to play hard and expect the other team not to do likewise. It has to be be big. This just can't happen. It's a pretty big line to even say anything to the other coach. You can be pissed about it, use it as fuel, but you should not act like a player. I think rest of the year at least.
The assistant who shoved with a player needs some punishment too. Once you get entangled with the other team get the hell out. This isn't some AAU or men's league. Maybe the Assistant coach is taking one for the team. Juwan gets fired, suspended, whatever helps them in recruiting etc.
The timeout is a bit of a dick move, but the guys was coaching his bench kids, who don't get to play, so rather than letting time expire, he acted like he would with the starters. I made a mistakes like that, calling a timeout when game was over. I said to the other coach, "sorry but my bench guys are dummies, trying to make a point."
I don't think anyone is saying a slap is OK. I do think people are acknowledging a slap will hurt, but a punch from Howard could put a person in a coma (or worse). I think that's kind of a big difference. What are you guys trying to say ? A slap is OK and a punch isn't? Fire his ass.
Agreed. He should be fired. This is on that list of things you just can’t do as a coach
It doesnt matter if it was a "slap" or a "punch" or a "trip" or a "hip check" or a "perfect form tackle." He hit the coach of the other team intentioanallly because he was mad at a late timeout. He can have a timeout now.Definitely an open-handed slap by Howard, and it’s in response to a Wisconsin coach getting into it with a Michigan player.
Its a big difference in outcome. It should not be a big difference in penalty.I don't think anyone is saying a slap is OK. I do think people are acknowledging a slap will hurt, but a punch from Howard could put a person in a coma (or worse). I think that's kind of a big difference.
Closest thing I can remember is Woody Hayes punching an opposing player in the 1978 Gator Bowl. He'd won 5 national championships at Ohio State and he still got fired. What's Juwan Howard won?Honestly, only thing I can compare it to is the famous Bob Knight chair throw.

Which if it happened today, would have been covered by the media in a completely different manner than it did back then.
Which is exactly why Howard being pissed is stupid. The Wisconsin coach called a timeout because Michigan was pressing and instead of taking a ten second violation he called the timeout. If Howard wanted the game to just run its course then pull everyone back, but he didn't and he's pissed that Gard didn't just let it happen.Stupid unwritten rules. I don’t understand how one team can continue to play hard and expect the other team not to do likewise.
This is where I am. Incredibly embarrassing behavior from Howard. You're not a 13-YO or Brad Marchand. Stupid macho bullshit. Michigan AD issued a statement later last evening essentially apologizing to Wiscy. I'm sure it was, in part, to try and minimize subsequent punishment, but Howard best settle the fuck down in the aftermath or he'll find himself out of a job with a needless stain on his resume.Best case is that he sits for the remainder of the regular season. Worst case is that he misses the conference tourney and anything after that or he gets fired.
