I think Recchi had a better career than Modano, but Modano gets in first because it's the Hockey HOF, not the NHL HOF, and Modano basically goes down as the best American born player of all time.

And Modano has the benefit of being the Stars' all time franchise guy, so he's more of a presence in that regard. Recchi split his time among 7 teams, which fair or not sometimes works against a player.

Not sure what the Flyers are doing, but that's usually what we say this time of year. Not much cap space being saved.

I mean, I guess they get out from under the final 2 years of the Hartnell deal, but the Umberger contract is pretty terrible and he's signed for 3 more years.

Well, we kind of have our answer:

Flyers GM Ron Hextall would only talk about the speed and versatility of R.J. Umberger, for whom Hartnell was traded, and that the two-year difference in their contract term was a factor.

“That is part of when you look at when making moves,” Hextall told CSN Philly. “That is one thing we certainly factored in. Cap flexibility moving forward was part of the thought process here and that is attractive to us. Three years down the road and looking ahead, we got guys who will be up.”
Looks like the Blue Jackets were targeting Hartnell and convinced him to waive his NTC:

GM Jarmo Kekalainen of the Blue Jackets, however, shed a little more light on Hartnell’s decision.

It was a trade for Umberger that he was discussing with the Flyers, and Hartnell was his target. The Flyers gave him permission to speak with him and sell him on the Blue Jackets.

“He asked if we were committed to winning,” Kekalainen said, via the Jackets’ site.

“That was his only concern wherever he was going to go; he said ‘I’m 32 years old, I have a lot of money, but I want to win.’ And that’s basically the question I wanted to hear and the answer I wanted to give.

“He had a lot of questions. He wanted me to talk about the team, where we’re heading and how I felt about the future. The question was ‘can we win, can we be better in the future? Why?’ That was the hard question that he wanted to ask me…that’s all he wanted to do in the future. He wanted to go to a team that he feels has a chance to win the Stanley Cup.”

The sell job worked, and Hartnell waived his no-move for the Blue Jackets.
I guess Umberger wanted out of Columbus.

So Quick beat ANA/CHI and the NYR with a busted wrist

Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick hoisted the Stanley Cup last Monday at the team's celebratory parade. If you saw him wincing, there's a reason why.
Quick had surgery on Tuesday, after injuring his wrist during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Kings confirmed the procedure, but couldn't specify which wrist was injured.
Quick. 28, was scheduled to appear on the ice at the goalie camp that bears his name at Stamford Twin Rinks in Connecticut, which is owned by his father-in-law. An email sent to parents who enrolled their children in the summer camp explained that Quick was having "emergency surgery" on a wrist injury. The Kings later said the surgery wasn't an emergency procedure.
The email said that Quick was injured in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final against the New York Rangers; the Kings later said that he injured his wrist in the second round of the playoffs against the Anaheim Ducks
The injury was originally thought not to be severe. But after a postseason MRI, the damage was reassessed and Quick went under the knife on Monday.
The expected recovery time is eight weeks, and he’s prohibited from being on the ice during that time.
He’s still expected to appear at the Jonathan Quick Goalie Camp in an advisory capacity, and the camp offered full refunds for anyone that requested one.
Quick won his second Stanley Cup with the Kings this month after posting a 16-10 record with a .911 save percentage and a 2.58 goals against average. He allowed 10 goals in five games against New York, but pitched a shutout in Game 3. Quick completed the first year of a 10-year, $58-million contract.

Johnston was like Pittsburgh's plan D. Awesome.

The more I think about it, the more I think it was a huge mistake for them to remove Shero.

Elsewhere, free agency kinda sorta began today at 12:01. You can talk to free agents now. The Bolts have decided to buy out Ryan Malone and they're reportedly close to signing Ryan Callahan to a long term deal north of $5.5m AAV.

6 years 34.8 million (5.8 per)

Wasn't he looking for 7ish from the Rags but took less than 6 from the Bolts? Tampa isn't that nice...

Speaking of being overpaid, the Oilers just signed Nikita Nikitin for 2/$9 million. He's a good player that will certainly help the Oilers, but yikes.

Seems like they've got to overpay to sign anyone.

With some of the dough & term being bandied about for guys like Stralman ($4m+ AAV for 4+ years) and Niskanen ($5m+ for 4+ years), etc I think that's an alright deal for the Oil

This is all about the Penguins continuing their regular season dominance and winning individual awards - this guy is nothing but offense, Byslmagic on steroids.  Then we'll get to the real season and pffffffft.

The Rags will get the Bolt's 2nd round pick because Callahan re-signed in TPA. TPA will get NYR 7th rounder in 2015.

Callahan's deal comes with full NTC for first 4 years and he will submit a list of teams for last 2 years

Both per @KatieStrangESPN. I can't access twitter on my work computer and it's a pita to post twitter links from mobile. So there you go.

Huh? Is that Gaborik? Richards still has about 2874829 years left on the deal he signed with the Flyers.

The story is that they were loyal by not using the buyout. I read the tweet and autopiloted it to mean a new deal. mea culpa.

Yeah, that makes sense.

The center market is pretty crazy this year. McKenzie tweeted that 4 teams (3 west, 1 east) are seriously chasing Jason Spezza who reportedly wants out of Ottawa. Then you've got Ryan Kesler who apparently still wants out of Vancouver. Joe Thornton may go if San Jose decides to abandon ship and Paul Stastny is a UFA. Lots of intriguing players out there.

Gaborik gets a 7-year(!) extension from LA. Lebrun and others speculating the AAV is in the $4.9 million range.

That is a hell of a lot of term for a guy as injury prone as Gaborik.  He's only played more than 70 games three times since 2005.

To be honest, when the kings signed Justin Williams, the same things were said.. I think he retires after year 5

Dale Tallon is nuts if he trades that pick knowing he won't draft Ekblad.

Dropping to #2 I could see but... this reeks of a colossal mistake. And I hope the B's are in the thick of it.

Florida could do a lot with all that cap space to become a playoff team right now. I don't think it's a terrible idea for them to trade it

What do you think a fair price for the #1 pick would be?  Lucic, Boychuck, Spooner, #25? I don't see either team saying yes to that. But I'd make that in a heartbeat if I was the Bs

I think he's lying about the two great offers.  He's just trying to entice teams to come forth with their best offer, and hopefully one that's an overpay.  He had to think on the fly when asked about how many established players were invloved in the proposals and he came up with the lazy answer to the effect of "one on boths sides, we just need to decide what's the best option for us".

This is another big issue to come out - been talk the cap might be 69 million and a bit instead of 71.1 like had been speculated.

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun  16s
Teams eagerly awaiting cap number. Said one GM: ``There is going to be some major scrambling if the number if lower than thought.''

It is a little ridiculous that we're a few hours away from the draft and 3 days from free agency and the league/PA haven't agreed on a cap number yet. It's sort of important when making roster decisions.

Lavoie says cap may be as low as $68 million. Gulp.

Also, sounds like Kesler to Anaheim is a real possibility.

Dreger says Kesler to Anaheim is done.

Edit: deal is Nick Bonino, Lucas Sbisa, #24 to Vancouver for Kesler.

Bonino is a nice little player, but seems like this is a big win for Anaheim. They have the D depth to move Sbisa and also hang on to the #10 pick they got from Ottawa in the Ryan trade.

Next to go will probably Spezza.

Why does the NHL not decide on a Cap until the last second?

It has to be an accounting issue, something related to calculating figures from the current fiscal year into the next. Or they're stupid. Whatever the case, they sure are cutting it close.

Between here and everywhere.
If the cap goes down to 68 million, the Bruins are all but fucked, right?

Unless they're able to move Kelly, Boychuk, and Campbell - is there any way they sign Krug, Smith, AND Iginla?

This sucks.

The cap issue deals with the new TV deal. It's obviously not included in the revenue from last year, but there is a provision in the CBA that would allow them to count it when determining the cap for 2014-2015. Supposedly they're sorting out the details. If it is counted, the cap goes up but the players have to put more money in escrow as a hedge against the league not hitting revenue marks for next season.

Jim Benning is wheeling and dealing: Vancouver sends the 3rd round pick they grabbed from Anaheim to NYR for Derek Dorsett.

Also, the Arizona Coyotes are buying out Mike Ribeiro. The bad news for Arizona is Ribeiro didn't pan out as hoped. But the good news is they actually have an ownership group with enough cash to actually buy a guy out.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

The Bruins were already going to have a hard time fitting everyone under the cap without some major moves. This makes it that much harder.

I wonder if Chiarelli considers a compliance buyout now. It would be real nice to have Boychuks 3.3 million back. (Unless of course there's someone willing to make a trade)

They could very easily find a taker for Boychuk - I would not want to move him right now though.

Really hoping there's a taker for Kelly, otherwise Eriksson looks like the next candidate they'd be looking to move.

No chance Boychuk is bought out. He'd probably fetch a significant return if they traded him, there aren't many top 4 defensemen available at $3.3 million. If anything, he's underpaid. Jay Garrison got a 2nd rounder, I'd have to imaging Boychuk would get more than that. Chris Kelly pretty much has to go one way or another. Unfortunately he may not be able to be bought out. McQuaid, too.

To be honest, I really wish they could rip up the Seidenberg contract.

Because he is hurt. You can't buy out injured players unless they are medically cleared by 7/1. As far as I know, he hasn't been cleared.
