Because he is hurt. You can't buy out injured players unless they are medically cleared by 7/1. As far as I know, he hasn't been cleared.
damn, I did not know that rule. That fucking sucks, because they desperately need to buy him out

Well, it raises the probability that EJ gets his wish and they go with a kid line for the 4th line. Unfortunately means our top guys will likely be playing more PK time but c'est la vie.

couple notes on twitter that Scott Burnside of ESPN has been elevated to President of the NHLWA (PHWA?  Whatever the writer's association is).

Yeah, seriously. What a day for Christian Ehrhoff. He'll now be collecting a paycheck from the Buffalo Sabres through 2028. Nice little retirement plan. Not to mention he suddenly became the best defensemen on the market this year and will cash in big time over the next week or so.

Hard to believe they couldn't trade him. The cap hit wasn't that bad and as I recall the deal was pretty heavily frontloaded. Without looking it up (I doubt my phone could handle Capgeek) I'm going to guess he had a NMC and made it clear he wouldn't waive for anyone, kinda like Danny Briere. But even then, he's a good player, I'd have just kept him.

The big problem was the cap-recapture penalty if Ehrhoff retired early. Luongo is the only one of those contracts who has actually moved, and he is a bit of a unique circumstance. It's a big issue for teams with those pre-lockout back diving deals.

Tampa sends Nate Thompson to Anaheim for 4th and 7th in 2015. Busy day for Steve Yzerman!

Agreed, Briere was pretty bad for them and will only get worse. I assume the Avs are trying to buy his playoff production, but I'm not sure how wise it is, counting on that.

Great trade for Montreal. Which means it's a shitty trade for Boston.

Absolutely. They trade for a guy 5 years younger than the washed up Briere and get a draft pick from Colorado as well.

It's a cap dump for Colorado. They've been trying to move Parenteau for months.

I don't think it's a huge win for Montreal. Briere is clearly on the downswing, but Parenteau's a negative possession player who is more of a playmaker than a scorer. He also strikes me as a player who needs to be in a top 6 role surrounded by talent to be effective. If we view this as Parenteau in, Vanek out, that's a downgrade for Montreal IMO.

Edit: by cap dump, I mean Colorado gets out of the last year on Parenteau's deal. Salaries close to a wash for this season.

Well, I think if you want to bring Vanek into it, you need to specify who is replacing Briere for Montreal and measure it as Vanek + Briere vs. Parenteau + Player X.

Also, to be fair to Parenteau, Vanek is an even worse possession player than he is (47% CF vs. ~50% CF) and Vanek's GF% was well outpaced by his CF% last season, so he might be due for a production slip.  Additionally, Parenteau was a better possession player relative to his teammates (+3.8%) than Vanek was relative to his (-1.1%).

.
This is not true. Parenteau was a (slightly) negative possession player because Colorado sucked at possession. But relative to his team he was a good possesson player. His CF% relative to his team was +3.7%, +1.7% and +3.5% the last three regular seasons.

Briere has worse possession numbers both in raw numbers and relative to his team.

A lot of red on there, and Parenteau was neutral even though he wasn't particularly sheltered.
