The last time we saw the Red Sox, they were breaking a 12-game win streak. Now, after a day off, the Sox get to face the 20-12 Braves. Kutter Crawford looks to continue his early season success against the Braves, who are on a 3-game skid.

let’s go! Beat the Bravos!

The last game thread at least opened with some Spanish phrases.

My only comment here is I love how Braves is translated into Bravos. The words are similar but bravo in Spanish means angry, or mad as in My wife is mad at me for something. Brave has nothing to do with that, and the correct translation would be "valiente".

And a side anecdote, there is an expression in Panama when someone is like really good at something we say he is a "Bravo de Boston". Why use the Boston version of the Braves there eludes me.

The Red Sox played the Cobb County Braves four games last year and came away with a 3-1 record. In Cobb, they split the series and that team was not as good as this year's model.

Series 12: SOX vs BRAVES
We’re done with the Twins. A 9-2 win staves
off a sad sweep and a travel day paves
the way for another chance to earn raves.
We hold on to hope although fate behaves
unkindly, injuring some of our faves.
This is the point where a lesser team caves,
throws in the towel, or openly craves
for some sweet release as they become slaves
to misfortune, but the Sox are not knaves.
Our ups and our downs may happen in waves.
but you won’t find us with feet in our graves.
We’ll win with some routes. We’ll lose some close shaves.
We’ll give up walk-offs. We’ll hang on for saves.
We’ll defy the odds and cause some shockwaves.
There’s no fear here. Let’s take 2 from the Braves.
(Then go celebrate at Buster and Dave’s.)

Weather looks good. Cheap tickets in the upper deck. Day off of work.
Off to a good start.
Tek jersey and red hat with the blue bill read to go.
Time to win one in The Battery

As much as I loved Glavine and Maddox, I loathed Chipper Jones and especially that awful sack of shit Rocker (although glad he inspired Eastbound and Down). I just hated that team since the mid 90's and nothing will change that...... except maybe if I find myself in the unfortunate situation of having to deal with them playing either the Astros, Rangers or Yankees in a WS.

Why did you loathe Chipper?

The board informs me that it's @CR67dream 's birthday today, so win this one for the guy who carried the torch of optimism through a long dark winter. Go Sox!

I had the same question, also, no mention of Smoltz.

I hope they respect their opponent and don't say any bad words during the contest.
  1. To be a fair stand-up baseball game in a stadium, or as near that size as practical.
  2. No wrestling allowed.
  3. The innings to be of three outs duration.
  4. If any player falls through weakness or otherwise, he must get up unassisted, the boxer has 10 seconds to allow him to do so, the other man meanwhile to return to his corner, and when the fallen man is on his legs the round is to be resumed and continued until the three minutes have expired. If one man fails to come to the scratch in the 10 count allowed, it shall be in the power of the referee to give his award in favour of the other man.
  5. A man hanging on the baseline in a helpless state, with his toes off the base, shall be considered down.
  6. Players are prohibited from hitting below the belt, holding, tripping, pushing, biting, spitting on or wrestling their opponent. Players typically wear uniforms with the waistband raised so the opponent is not allowed to strike the groin area. They also are prohibited from kicking, head-butting, or striking with any part of the arm other than the knuckles of a closed fist. They are prohibited as well from hitting the back, the back of the head/neck, or the kidneys.
  7. No player not in the lineup will be allowed in the field during the innings.
  8. Should the contest be stopped by any unavoidable interference, the umpire to name the time and place as soon as possible for finishing the contest; so that the game must be won and lost, unless the owners of both teams agree to draw the stakes.
  9. The gloves to be fair-sized gloves of the best quality and new.
  10. Should a glove burst, or come off, it must be replaced to the umpire's satisfaction.
  11. That no shoes or boots with spikes or sprigs (wire nails) be allowed.
  12. The contest in all other respects to be governed by revised Major League Baseball Rules.

Those 1970’s Sox hats might be my favorite variant. Have one myself that needs to go back into the rotation.

I get more comments on this one than any of my other hats. I’ll wear it till it falls apart. Just now walking into the stadium the ticket scanner guy asked where in New England I was from and loved the hat.
