Just saw a Darren Rovell tweet that said a new survey has Brady on par with Tiger Woods now in popularity.

That's sad. Good job NFL. You've successfully smeared the guy who should be the fucking face of your league. Your league is under fire for drugs and domestic violence and you chose *this* to get worked up about. You not only allowed Mortensen's erroneous tweet about "10 balls being 2 PSI under" to sit out there you specifically told the team not to correct that info when you had access to the actual numbers. Brady should be the fucking poster child for the NFL for working his way up from where he started, but the league would rather let untrue assertions (speaking to Mortensen's tweet) fester and allow a narrative to coalesce around Brady.

Fuck you Goodell. I hope Kessler and Kraft burn you to the ground.

Brady will come away fine in time. Many of the people who voted negatively didn't like him to begin with and those who have seemingly switched their minds will come back as time passes.

The NFL and Goodell are still scumbags for this whole ordeal, though.

My current fantasy is that Kraft, knowing that he has no ability to appeal the lose of the draft pick, works with the NFLPA to have the current CBA dismissed causing players to strike and all player contracts to be voided and that we resign Revis.

On the other hand, it makes perfect sense. Domestic violence and drugs are areas that are fraught with the opportunity for disciplinary missteps and misjudging public opinion (as shown). Something innocuous like this is a perfect way for him to reset the narrative to "Goodell is so harsh with punishments!" That's really the simple reason he's going to the mat with this. There's little downside. Even in an over-punishment situation like this, he's (especially with this team) going to have a sizable portion of the public on his side. Hell, some of them are even getting on him because they think it's too light.

It's that the NFL allowed it to happen. They could have slowed it all down immediately with a correction to Mort's tweet. Goodell was pissed that he got his ass handed to him and decided to show how tough he was. Seeing Rovell's tweet just kind of brought it home for me.

This isn't a "why do you care what others think" moment. It's a "holy shit, how fucking capricious is the NFL to go along willingly with what happened" moment.

Does no one in the media remember that the NFL basically forced NE to suspend/fire these guys?

That was the topic on ESPN Radio this morning--they fired these guys and now they are defending them.

Someone, possibly Jemele Hill then said, "Well, do we really think the Patriots fired them because they knew they were doing things against the rules and then assumed they wouldn't talk? That doesn't make sense. They won't have good feelings towards NE after getting fired."

Talk about serving your NFL master, ESPN Radio is leading the top of the hour with the Mike&Mike rant essentially sayingt "If the Pats say nothing happened, why are these guys suspended! Tell us why if you're so big on transparency."

Gee, maybe since these guys have privacy rights that an employer can't trample on?

This is an interesting part to me as well.  I was pretty surprised that Goodell survived the Rice incident, and it seemed like one of the main reasons was Kraft's support.  Why Roger is picking a fight with Kraft now is odd.

I doubt he was picking a fight against Kraft specifically.  I think Goodell is in surivial mode and he just can't have a another story about how the NFL is run by idiots--which is what would have happened if the report said "maybe there was deflation, maybe not, ideal gas law explains a lot, hard to tell because no one measured the things, and by the way the league office was deliberately leaking this shit before they knew what the fuck had happened."

Why do I care so much about this story?
Because the perfect crime may have been committed (against the Pats), because your team is being trashed, and because there isn't a goddamn thing you can do about it.

Somebody called TB today's Richard Jewell. Maybe he is; maybe he isn't.

But remember this -- for every Richard Jewell ultimately exonerated, many more spend decades unfairly imprisoned -- and some have been wrongly put to death.

I do not imagine that even with the Patriots' and TB's resources, our odds are much better if public opinion is the measuring stick.

In my view, on the public opinion front, and the Kraft toppling G front, there is optimism in this thread akin to expecting that Jake Bequette will be named an All Pro. (Legal front -- I think there are reasons to be optimistic for a partial victory).

So ... channel your inner Raider.

I mentioned this yesterday. The message oozing out of NFL HQ since last week was that the appeal would not change the punishment one bit. Roger & Co. attach great import to not yielding an inch on this one.

Yep, the only true goal of the NFL and its hired investigator was to reach this conclusion:

At various points in the investigation, counsel for the Patriots questioned the integrity and objectivity of game officials, various NFL executives and certain NFL Security representatives present at the AFC Championship Game or otherwise involved in the investigative process. We found no evidence to substantiate the questions raised by counsel. Specifically, we identified no evidence of any bias or unfairness. We believe that the game officials, NFL executives, NFL Security representatives and other members of the NFL staff who participated in the testing of the footballs and the subsequent investigative process acted fairly, properly and responsibly.

The NFL talking points handed out to ESPN are pretty clear now:

1. Deflator jokes
2. Why'd they suspend the jamokes
3. The Pats' science expert received donations from the Kraft group

Every host or show I've come across since the rebuttal hits on all three, without giving anything more than lip service to the rebuttal itself.

I didn't hear it all, but John Clayton was on WEEI just now with a generally reasonable take. He did say something, however, along the lines of "They're getting this huge punishment because they got caught." Unfortunately, no one challenged him with what the Chargers got for their stickum incident.

The NFL and Goodell are still scumbags for this whole ordeal, though.

How many people remember that immediately after he won the Super Bowl, Joe Namath was suspended indefinitely from football because he refused to sell his ownership share in a mobbed up nightclub?  Namath even retired in a tearful press conference before meeting with Rozelle and agreeing to liquidate his holdings.  (Rozelle then lifted the suspension.)

Troy Vincent tweeted out an image of/quote from Joe Namath yesterday to reinforce the notion that football is "an honest game."

Brady will be fine.

Holy shit. That explains so much. Guys, he wasn't colluding with Roger Goodell when he was president of the Players Association and reportedly turned over confidential documents to Roger Goodell and Bob McNair, he was just being honest about the things they were asking about. Thank god. I was worried we were dealing with a liar and hypocrite of the highest order.

Wait, I thought the huge punishment wasn't for 'getting caught' it was for being uncooperative and a repeat offender. The so-called infraction had little to do with the decision.

As we've learned from past Schefter visits, they play to the audience. The national ESPN insiders will sound reasonable, or even pro-Patriots, when on Boston radio ... and then never express the same opinions when on a national stage

1. Exacerbated yesterday morning.

2. Highlighted yesterday morning, but what can you do?

3. Exacerbated yesterday morning, either by sloppiness (which is what happens when things are rushed) or being way too cute in characterizing the Pats' relationship but not being forthright about Kraft's

This is correct.  They turn green when they're in the outfield and brown when they're on the dirt of the infield.

Here, he got fed the "11/12 balls +2lbs under PSI" soundbite that turned into this whole ridiculous mess. He was used, intentionally, and it compromised his integrity - at least it seems that way.

This is infuriating. Kraft said he was willing to accept the penalties and move on and suspended the only people the Wells report found responsible for anything, McNally and Jastrzemski. Brady is fighting a suspension for obstruction because it's capriciously harsh compared to the $25k and $50k fines other players got for similar infractions. Kraft is pissed about the team's punishment, as seen by the website they released, but it's not clear what he's actually doing about it in terms of fighting it since he cannot appeal.

The same goes for Jastrzemski's and McNally's suspensions, which were ordered to continue by Troy Vincent and who cannot be reinstated without Troy Vincent's prior authorization (see below for the relevant text from Vincent's announcement). It's pathetic how blatant so much of this kind of "reporting" is and how poor the rest of it is.

The NFL and ESPN have been chasing their own tails for so long in this that they don't even know where they are anymore. I can only hope this impacts their bottom line.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft advised Commissioner Roger Goodell last week that Patriots employees John Jastremski and James McNally have been indefinitely suspended without pay by the club, effective on May 6. Neither of these individuals may be reinstated without the prior approval of NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent. If they are reinstated by the Patriots, Jastremski is prohibited from having any role in the preparation, supervision, or handling of footballs to be used in NFL games during the 2015 season. McNally is barred from serving as a locker room attendant for the game officials, or having any involvement with the preparation, supervision, or handling of footballs or any other equipment on game day.
