I don’t think he’d be saying this and making it public now if he wasn’t trying to force a trade to LA. Then the full-court press is on to recruit Kyrie after Kyrie’s make-up call two weeks ago.

Barf.

When can Kyrie officially sign his new deal, only when free agency starts, or after the season ends, before the draft? If the Celtics would be including 2019 draft picks in a Davis deal (e.g., Kings pick, Clippers pick if it conveys, own pick), it may be more enticing to New Orleans to have those picks in hand before the draft than after they’ve become players. (Ainge could always draft players the Pelicans want if they have an understanding beforehand, but if the bidding is still ongoing at that point, you have to pick between doing what’s best with those pieces for you v. what you think Bew Orleans would want).
July 1st is the date when FA can begin to verbally commit so the Celtics cannot do anything prior to that date when Kyrie agrees to a new contract with the Celtics or elsewhere. This is one of those situations however where we draft player(s) for the Pelicans in the draft a week earlier while waiting for the clock to tick down and officially announce a deal.

And so it begins.......

Per Woj:

Agent Rich Paul has notified the New Orleans Pelicans that All-NBA forward Anthony Davis has no intention of signing a contract extension if and when presented AND THAT HE HAS REQUESTED A TRADE, Paul told ESPN on Monday.
NBA owners should be livid that LeBron's long time business partner is working to poach one of the league's top player. However, the stars rule the universe in the NBA.

Once the season ends, Kyrie is no longer on his Rose rule deal so the Celtics are free to trade for Davis.
The technicality here is that Kyrie has to either sign with the Celtics or another team prior to us trading for Davis so nothing “official” can occur prior to the July 1st verbal.

Hey, they are the ones who are allowing LeBron to run his sports agency through Paul while he’s still playing in the league. It’s the worst kept secret in all of basketball.

The demand for a trade was done now for a purpose. He wants to go to L.A.

The Pelicans should immediately fire Dell Demps. He is the guy who got them in this position and should not be in charge of the biggest trade in the franchise’s history. This trade could decide if their is a team in New Orleans in five years.

Celtics will be taking real risk in July that he’ll re-sign at this point if the Pels do hold on to him now. Will Ainge push all his chips in for a guy who wants to go somewhere else?

LeBron will be 36 in 2020, though. if he doesn’t get there now, is Davis going to be super excited to join him at that point?

Problem is he’s going to get there now. Danny did pretty much everything right, and we get fucked over with the Hayward injury and Davis and LeBron pulling a power play. This is why the NBA is the worst of the four leagues. The players run it.

Given the uneasy feeling that Kyrie might walk now, just trade Kyrie in a package for AD. Obviously a third team has to be involved, but that takes away the Rose Rule issue.

What are some of the best, legitimate, offers that could actually be put on the table for Davis, by various teams?

Well it's great when Allen, Pierce, and KG decide to get together though, right?

They didn’t “decide to get together”. Boston tried to trade for Garnett, he refused to sign an extension with them. They then traded for Allen and later revisited Garnett trade talks. Ainge engineered that, not the players.

From ESPN article:

“Boston could agree to a Davis trade prior to July 1 that isn't finalized until after that date.”

That’s a delicate tightrope but loosens the chains a bit I think.

You think he's going to threaten to sit out games in season? Has anyone ever done that? Played a substantial portion of season then put up an ultimatum?
He won't have to. If he just says that he won't sign an extension anywhere other than LA, nobody else will offer anything for him.

They won't do that, because Davis won't re-sign in 2020 if Kyrie's not here.

I guess. I just can't believe that the players weren't involved in that. But I could be naive.

As that drops the acquisition price for Boston I’m all for Davis’ people making that proclamation. For all our frustrations with Jaylen this year, he’s a better prospect than the best prospect LA has to offer (Ingram). And Boston has a lottery pick in hand to boot.

Is there anything to suggest LeBron won’t be in his prime for another 3-4 years? I’ve been listening to people call him old and reaching the end of his prime since 2015. Today’s technologies in training and nutrition are light years from what they were two decades ago yet so many people continue using antiquated age ranges to project declines.

Still, I find it highly unlikely that Davis would accept a trade to Boston only to leave for LA one year later. I’ve always said that Davis will play where he wants to play......if it truly is with LA that is the team who will trade for him.

I’m sorry, you think that Garnett’s initial refusal to play in Boston was part of some master plan cooked up by he and Pierce? And that Pierce and Allen’s recruiting trips after Boston and Minnesota had reached an agreement in principle a second time was part of a public show to hide their evil machinations?

The Davis leverage is that he can simply declare he will not sign any extension with a team that trades for him, except for the Lakers. OTOH, the Pels could hope that a team such as Boston or Philly decides to do what the Raptors did with Kawhi, thereby driving up the asking price.

NO doesn't really "lose" anything by waiting until the offseason, unless Magic pulls out some unbeatable trade offer now that he could not or would not do in the offseason. I don't really know what that offer is, so, it's likely Davis will have to deal with being a Pelican until July.

Their centerpiece would be a wing that shown’s no real willingness to play defense or ability to shoot threes. Maybe Ingram figures it out in a new location, but at this point Jaylen is not only the better player, but the one with more upside.

NOLA may not even entertain trade offers---a strategy (not a good one, but one that ownership can occasionally require) is simply to say you aren't dealing him and are focused on building a winning team around him.

The other thing from NOLA's perspective is that they can really put pressure on Lakers right at the deadline by making clear they expect to take Celtics offer (and tease "Tatum is better than anything you can offer" or whatever it might be) if Lakers don't get it done by deadline.

As others have noted, Davis may or may not make this all moot by saying he only wants to be in LA.

Talent isn’t the issue. If he privately says he won’t resign anywhere else, there are two options. He’s traded to LA, or Ainge calls his bluff and risks losing him after a year.

I can't see it. Athletes simply don't continue to perform at a high level and compete after their early 30s. Even with newer methods, I cant think of one older professional who still actually does anything other than put up hollow stats.

In all seriousness, while the Pelicans probably don't like it, this appears to be Davis forcing his way to LA. If so, the question will be who joins LeBron and AD during the offseason.

Kawhi says hello.

AD could hide behind injury, high usage by Pels, not making the playoffs, etc for not playing the rest of the season.

Demanding a trade now makes it pretty clear that LA is the choice. Everyone knows that Danny was waiting for AD in the offseason. Rich Paul is telling Danny, don't wait for us, use your assets to make your in-season deals now because AD is going to LA LA Land.

No team can beat Boston's offer of Tatum. We have to be the big favorite as long as New Orleans isn't completely foolish. I cant see him traded until this summer.

Hakeem at one point demanded a trade and Houston just waited him out. But the examples of that strategy working are definitely few and far between

Right, but the Pelicans can hardly demand Brown and Tatum under those circumstances, can they? So the acquisition cost goes down considerably, and Boston bets on Irving’s recruiting ability to convince Davis to stay for the threepeat.

Just some guesses

LAL - Ingram, Ball, filler salary, other small assets
LAC - SGA, Harris, Williams, picks
PHI - Simmons, salary or Fultz, Zhaire, MIA pick, other picks
POR - CJ, picks
TOR - Siakam, Jonas (or Ibaka), OG
DEN - Murray, Porter, Milsap

I will take the field vs LAL.

Davis is 25 (soon to be 26), if he's trying to get traded to make himself on a title contender for the rest of this career (and it sounds like that is the goal) than LAL is not a good choice. Boston with Kyrie, Tatum*, Smart and others is a far better squad for the next 5+ years in a soft conference over LeBron at 35 in a very difficult conference.

All of this is wrong, if his goal is to go somewhere for 2-3 years than leave again.

*Assumes the trade is focused on picks + Jaylen.

I say we go out and win an NBA championship without him this year. Dear Danny...just focus on improving this team this year.
Of course, but the assets that could get us Davis in the offseason aren't going to be dealt in-season this year so the 2 routes don't really get in each other's way.

Absolutely include Tatum.

I know we don't want to hear this, but Davis going to TOR would be incredible. That would be such a terror of a team

I wouldn't deal Tatum.

AD/Paul make the ultimate decision here, so no matter what the Pels want, it all comes down to who AD will sign with.

What if Kyrie told Bron a few weeks ago, go get AD and I'll sign in the off-season?

Remember when it was guaranteed that PG13 was going to LA to join Bron Bron?
Difference there is that we didn’t know if George wanted his extra money to stay in OKC. We know here that Davis is willing to give it up.

Well he did just suffer his first semi-serious injury and will probably miss a quarter or so of the season. And the NBA isn’t the NFL QB position, so color me skeptical LeBron is still a top 5-10 player in 2020. Maybe if they rest him every other game and turn it in for the playoffs.

Yea, man, totally. Players should just be grateful for the opportunity these magnanimous owners provide them with, and stay in their lane - or, perhaps, shut up and dribble. They should absolutely never take control of their own careers. Just be happy to be here - unless you get injured, then the owners will shit on you, stretch your contract, and throw you out with the trash. But until then, partners!

LA really would prefer to wait till he's a FA as then you can imagine him being the focus post-Lebron supported by Kuzma/Hart/Ingram/Ball etc. But I don't imagine that is how this is all going to play out...

He won’t need to sit out. Just have his agent put out there that he won't sign an extension with anyone but LA. Is any other team going to give up what it will take to have Davis for 1.5 years? There could be, but it will give most teams pause.

There's just no way this is happening. Kyrie's weirdness is what led to the apology, and I take that at face value. Kyrie's weirdness isn't leading him back to the same situation he fought his way out of. His ENTIRE thing is wanting his own team. There's no chance he's going back to play with Lebron and then AD. None.

YMMV

Is there any chance the Celtics offer doesn’t start with Tatum + Jaylen + picks?
Yes, because you don't start with your best offer.

There is zero chance the Celtics start with that offer. I am sure NO will start there though, but that is way out of line with what any superstar with one year left on his deal trade looked like

According to message boards LeBron has needed “rest” for the last half dozen years which looking back now seems laughable. During that time Davis has missed games with 5-6 different injuries while LeBron has had one freak slip on the floor. You see players in their mid-30’s being as good if not better than they were 10 years earlier.....Jamal Crawford is the first that comes to mind. When will people accept that LeBron is different than even what is becoming the norm?
