How was it ugly? I have no memory of that.canderson said:Hamilton's Texas departure was ugly. I don't see this ending (or beginning) well.
It was pretty bad. I have a ton of Facebook friends who are Rangers fans and they were pretty hateful when he left. Tonight I had a friend who is a season ticket holder say they won't go to a game until he is gone.Van Everyman said:How was it ugly? I have no memory of that.
"“Texas, especially Dallas, has always been a football town. The good with the bad is they’re supportive, but they also got a little spoiled at the same time, pretty quickly. You can understand a really true, true baseball town. There’s true baseball fans in Texas but it’s not a true baseball town.” - Josh HamiltonVan Everyman said:How was it ugly? Andrew said:There's a solid enough chance Hamilton is worth $15M over the next 3 seasons. I think this is a good deal for Texas, so long as they utilize him properly and don't try to put him in CF again or anything.
It wasn't even the Rangers that took a chance on him. It was the Reds. The Rangers just traded for him after his rookie year.Cellar-Door said:Rangers fans also felt he owed them because they took a chance on him when he was down and out.
Of course that's bullshit since they only took the chance because he had tons of upside and they could dump him for nothing.
Pretty much this. I find it slightly ironic that he and his camp burned that bridge with Texas when they left like the Bride on The River Kwai. A slight bit awkward for them to be headed back to Texas but yeah, good for him and the Angels. Wasn't gonna work.Yaz4Ever said:I'm very happy for Hamilton in this situation. Hopefully he'll regain the fans' love and keep himself clean. I want him to go 0-25 against us this season, but would love to see him hit 45 HR against everyone else and really rub it in LAAAAA's face.

Texas Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan said the timing of Josh Hamilton's decision to quit smokeless tobacco this summer "couldn't have been worse."
"You would've liked to have thought that if he was going to do that, that he would've done it in the offseason or waited until this offseason to do it," Ryan said during an appearance on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM's "Galloway and Company" this week. "So the drastic effect that it had on him and the year that he was having up to that point in time when he did quit, you'd have liked that he would've taken a different approach to that."

The Rangers will take on less than $7MM of Hamilton’s contract, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. Hamilton will eat about $6MM of the contract himself, since he can make up at least some of the difference due to the fact that Texas does not have a state income tax. (That means the Angels will still save $13MM or so.) Hamilton will also receive an opt-out clause after 2016.
I suspect this was approved in this case because of the overall situation and the fact that Hamilton is really giving up very little or no money because of the state tax issue. I'm not convinced that this same approach would be approved in a different set of circumstances.Rasputin said:Wow, did we just come up with a way an opt-out clause could benefit a team?
It's something that can be offered to a player in order to convince them to lower their already negotiated salary in order to complete a trade with another team that will pick up the bulk of the salary.
Since opt outs are widely considered to have value to the player, I'm thinking that maybe, along with the income tax thing, it might have been used as part of the justification for Hamilton giving up salary. We all know it probably won't be used, but the income tax justification is a bit thin too.The additional inclusion of an opt out there seems fairly strange on the surface imo.
I live really close to Texas so I'm used to it.CaptainLaddie said:
