I think they hit this right by the rules, but it ignores the fact that the ump called it a dead ball well before the run scored.

Once he calls it a dead ball it doesn't matter whether he blew the call - it's a dead ball.

The dead ball call would be more compelling if there was any doubt as to the outcome of the play.

And Utley was called out, and never touched second

Never seen that play before

It's unbelievable, no matter how many thousands of games one sees, plays you've never seen before seem to come up shockingly frequently. This one might decide this series, WOW.

What a fucking stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid way to have this series potentially end. I know Shoo was in the box but he stuck his arm out in front of the catcher. This is a fucking joke and I'm not even rooting for the Jays.

I didn't know Canadians threw things! (Oh, crap, now they are reviewing the play. Hmmm.)

So, are they just talking to New York about the rule, or are they looking at it?

I don't think that's what happened, his bat was straight up and he kept a foot in the box.

Choo already stands on top of the plate, and then he holds his bat out like that. Blue Jays only good argument is that his bat is over the plate when the ball hits it. If it's in the box, call is going to stand.

He called it dead.

Yes, he should not have called it dead, but he did. How do you unring that bell?

Because they had no chance to get him IMO.

My understanding of the Sosh rule is that if you substituted Mr. Sandoval for Mr. Fielder there, it is definitely NOT Kosher.
Thats how I understand it also.

So I wont post the one of our illustrious 3b tripping over 2nd base while looking at a cake.

It does matter in principle, and I would argue that if the 3rd baseman was playing in for a bunt, or anything along those lines where there was any indication that they had a chance at the runner, the call would be different. The fact that they had no shot at the runner is what is deciding this.
