Ovis Portes (#233) started for DSL Red today & rewarded me for not having him even lower & pitched 2 scoreless innings, with 1 walk, 1 wild pitch & 4 strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 12..46.

He was relieved by Yoelvin Chirino (#228).

DSL Blue put themselves in a bit of a disadvantage a week ago when their game started by not starting YOELY.

Enrique Carta (#231) had started that game & pitched 2 scoreless innings. Yeferson Vargas had pitched the 3rd inning, but allowed a run (although he struck out 3).

Nicolas De La Cruz (#89) "started" today in the 4th inning & pitched 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, 2 walks, 1 HBP & 2 strikeouts.

Emmanuel Polo (#250) pitched a scoreless 7th & 8th inning, 1 hit, 1 hbp & 2 strikeouts, to lower his ERA to 10.31.

DSL Blue is losing 3-0 in the top of the 9th & only have 2 hits (although I'm pretty sure the game is actually over in real life, the reporting just takes a bit to get through to the box score).

In their defense, Pirates Gold is kind of a buzz saw. They are 31-12 & the 20-year-old pitcher they started off today with (put that man in A-Ball), Alexis Torres, pitched 5 1-hit innings, allowing 3 walks & striking out 6, & lowering his ERA to 0.56.

& old friend Inmer Lobo pitched the 1st 2 scoreless, hitless innings a week ago *shakes fist at Hoy Park*.

DSL Blue added a 3rd hit in the 9th, but lost 3-0.

Double for Kleyver Salazar (#101) & singles for Cristofher Paniagua (#160 - who also walked) & Chad Delancey (#227), who raised his average to .125.

Salcedo pitched 3 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits & 1 walk & striking out 5.

But they still lost 2-1, & had only 2 hits.

Franklin Arias was 1-2 with a double & 2 walks.

Claudio Evangelista was 1-2 with a walk.

Was waiting to see him miss a bat with a fastball and finally did with his last K.

The CU to RHH looks solid.
Part of that may be a use of the other stuff to try to put away hitters when he gets ahead, but yeah, definitely a promising outing. Seemed to locate more of his pitches better than he has been. That's a pretty tough AAA lineup, too.

In the WooSox 4th, Abreu had walked & Fitzgerald had doubled, & Niko Kavadas was up with 2nd & 3rd & 1 out, & he struck out (then Zimmer lined out to end the inning).

Going to use this as an excuse to talk about Niko as a prospect. I don't really think he is one. I have him at #71 (compared to SoxProspects who has him 42).

I don't think he was really promoted from Portland out of merit, but more to clear space for Blaze Jordan at Portland.

Niko, who turns 25 in October, was slashing .204/.386/.430 (.816 OPS) while walking 21.5% & striking out 37.5%. He also had 14 homers in 293 PAs.

Everyone else in Worcester is raking, but he is not. Niko has maintained an identical .386 OBP, but he has stopped slugging (.194/.386/.323, .708 OPS) & only has 1 home run in 83 PAs (all stats coming into today's game). The walk rate is still a pretty ridiculous 21.7%, & he has lowered his strikeout rate to 32.5%, but that is still super high, & appears to have come at the cost of hard contact.

Considering his age, position, leftiness, & not being nearly as good as Stephen Scott, I don't really see a path forward for him with the Red Sox, & probably not with another organization either...but maybe someone else could want him this off season, either as a throw-in on a larger trade or for a DSL flyer or two?

I'm trying to figure out which "slot" that is....
Paxton goes tonight
Sale on Thursday
Bello on Friday
Crawford on Saturday
Pivetta on Sunday.....
The "slot" would be Paxton's, no? Is Crawford going to get bumped and everyone else gets a little extra rest?

I would want Pivetta to be bumped & everyone else to get extra rest, but I know we probably aren't going to agree lol

It's close, though. Pivetta definitely seems better after an opener, but they don't really have an opener that makes sense with only Bernardino & Murphy as lefties in the pen.

& Crawford definitely seems better once through the order.

He is now 1-3 with a double, a walk, a lineout & a "sharply hit fly ball".

Same—Story is not a pitcher so I'm generally skeptical of the idea that the surgery he just recovered from is not generally going to be protective enough of the elbow for at least the next year or so before Mayer is potentially ready.

I also tend to think the distribution of Rafaela's games by position is pretty indicative of where the org sees him on the field. The upper minors teams haven't exactly been overflowing with middle infielders (until this year) but he is still getting the vast majority of his innings in the OF.
