Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 45 | Run: 60 | Arm: 60 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40

Calabasas High School in California has had just two players ever taken in the MLB Draft. Neither made it to the big leagues, but the first one was famous: Bret Saberhagen’s son, Drew, back in 2004. Call’s athleticism gives him the chance to be the first alum from the school to get drafted since 2006, though he’s more raw tools than polish at present.

The right-handed-hitting Call is easily a plus athlete who can really run and throw, with both tools having the chance to be plus in the future. There is some bat speed there, which points to more future power, though scouts were a little concerned about some swing-and-miss that showed up this spring.

Call’s speed is a big asset on both sides of the ball. He's a capable baserunner and someone with plenty of range at shortstop and center field. His strong arm works from the left side of the infield and is also a plus from the outfield, and he has the skills to excel in both spots. It might take him some time to sharpen those tools into performance, but there could be teams intrigued enough by his athleticism to try to sign him away from his commitment to UCLA.

Going to be interesting to see how many of these guys they sign.

Call is almost certainly a contingency pick. Zanetello and Anderson look like they are getting well over slot at this point.

Feeney was all over the place this year. He had 3 starts out of 14 that he gave up 7 runs or more, yet half of his games he gave up 2 ER or less. Going into the conference tournament he had lowered his ERA from 9.75 in early March to 3.99 but then blew up against South Dakota St. with 4 innings and 7 runs.
Looks like another control guy who might be interesting if they can add a couple mph.

Fogell was a tough SOB at UConn. Lefty reliever who will be tough on lefties
First round against Texas tech two UConn starters got hurt right before the playoffs and he had to give them 3 or 4 innings as they were desperate - and I believe he did it without giving up a run. Pitched decent against Florida in a tough spot also if I recall as he was running on fumes from throwing like 70 pitches the prior game.

~$600k under slot so far if my math is right, after signing draftees from rounds 6-9. Good to get those done quickly (probably pre-draft agreements with the area scouts.) Gives them that little extra to play with down the line.

Call was drafted after the tenth round, top-250 HS kid. Boston usually drafts one kid after the the pool rounds to potentially throw money at if they save enough. Speculation it may be Call.

Forgot to note that the first $150k per pick for rounds 11-20 is not counted towards the total pool.

I was about to write up a post about how Tek hung around long enough to become a shell of himself and that I'm glad he's back to making such a positive impact on the organization. But then I looked back at his BRef page and chuckled to see that his .672, .703, .766, and .723 OPS in his final four seasons would be comfortably in the top of the league these days.

It's a different offensive era; those last 4 years are 76, 77, 96 (39 G/ 123 PA), & 95 (68G/ 250 PA) by wRC+

Well, that'll be fun if he makes it to Greenville.
Seems pretty likely. For example, they drafted & signed 7 college pitchers in '21 & 5 of them have already pitched in AA & 6 have at least pitched in high-A.

The only exception is Matt Litwicki who has pitched like 40 innings in 6 years & made his Salem debut recently.

They apparently thought that was such a successful plan that they drafted & signed 13 of those guys in '22.

Those guys have made it to the following highest level in 1 calendar year:

Portland 1
Greenville 4
Salem 4
FCL 2
Haven't played (injured) 2
