Mets fans will crucify BVW if he trades Thor to the Yankees. They'd need to be getting back a lot more than just Realmuto from the Marlins.

Interesting, great leadoff hitter with as good an eye as there is in baseball, but the defensive metrics don't like him anymore.
He is not great defensively but should be ok playing left in Philadelphia. He was in two of the more difficult corner outfield spots last year being in right in SF and in left with the Yanks. He will certainly be an upgrade on Hoskins who was a statue out there.

Weird. He was an above average hitter in 2016 and his defensive numbers have never been bad. Since they have to pay him anyway, I'm surprised they wouldn't at least take a shot at seeing if he can recover at least little bit of health and value.
It sounds like they want to play kids and he wouldn't have been happy about that, so a bit of a preemptive clubhouse move.

Could be an option for the Yankees as a Didi replacement.

Fangraphs projects a wRC+ of 99, which would be plenty valuable if he can still play the field. Of course, Fangraphs doesn't know full detail of his medicals. The dilemma is, no contending team will want to commit a spot to him. But he will want to go to a spot where he has the best chance to play. Some non-contending team without a SS they are drying to develop should promise him the job and hope he can turn himself into a trade asset.

Yeah, but I still really don't understand this either. If they went out and said 'we'll trade Tulo and cover 90% of his contract, who'll take him for effectively $1.5 mil / yr', they'd really get no takers?

It's just odd in the context of teams nickel and dimeing pre- and arb- players over a couple hundred $K to then throw up their hands over a few million on a 'clubhouse move'.

Rosenthal had a wild rumor on MLBN: Puig and a pitchger (he suggested Alex Wood) to the Reds for Homer Bailey and prospects

The Giants are reportedly open to trying an "opener" approach this season, which is great because (1) decidedly old school SF Chronicle columnist Bruce Jenkins will HATE this, and (2) Bruce Bochy said last year that he didn't think the concept would work in the NL .

Is it me or has this been a very quiet Winter Meetings so far? Suggests that the big spenders are all engaged in various trade scenarios that need to sort themselves out before anyone can move on Machado, Harper, Keuchel, etc. I'm guessing the Yankees are the lynchpin and Cash is holding most of the cards. along with the LAD. If neither can't trade for Kluber or Thor, they sign Happ or Keuchel and then move on to the bats and bullpen.

Since the Sox weren't likely to be trading for any impactful players, they were able to sign their guys. Plus, DD tends to move quickly.

It does seem slow. I think you're right that Cash is holding a lot of the cards, but the four-team arms race in the NL East may have an effect too. Every agent/GM is probably playing MacPhail, Anthopolous, Van Wagenen, and Rizzo against each other right now.

Yes, everyone should aspire to live in a glorified box in NYC, Sf, LA, CHI, DC, or Boston, and be packed into an underground sardine can (smell included) with 1000s if their closest friends to get to work, after which they can pay $15 a glass for Woodbridge wine at misery hour at the corner bar.
Yeah. Not typically how pro pitchers are spending their time, in any of these cities.

You should know this. Don’t you dine with the Mammons regularly?

Wow, that’s an impressive investment for them. If they can hit they can do some damage.
They only had $25M committed to 2019 before this somehow, they will likely sign a hitter or two also.

The GMs are having trouble with cell service in their Las Vegas hotel, so that's not helping.

the Nats were rumored to want to move on from Roark, and they have, trading 1v1 with the Reds for another Tanner.

Justin Bour to the Angels, complicating the Pujols/Ohtani 1B/DH logjam there. Maybe this means they will DFA Pujols...

That Lance Lynn contract is surprising. I guess 10 per year isn't too bad, but three years seems like a big commitment.

Morton to the Rays certainly makes a really strong top 3 in the AL East. Yikes. No coasting in 2019 guys.

Not understanding the Lance Lynn deal at all. Are the Rangers not following the “tear it down” model to its fullest? It’s nice of them to be willing to try to finish around 500.

Wonder what the Nats are up to? That’s basically trading a occasionally good starter for a 12th guy in the pen. And they’re not that deep in rotation options. Dumping salary on a team that has 3 aces and a lot of competition? Makes no sense.

Familia back to the Mets, no details yet.

Edit: 3 years, more than $20 million.

3/30 actually for Familia, wow.

And now the Dodgers nab Joe Kelly for 3/25.
