Any tips for bounce/degree/swing technique for getting the ball to stick near the greens? Have pretty good touch w my SW near the greens but still get roll out a lot of the time.

What type of club or swing will promote more backspin to get that biting motion

What kind of ball are you using? If you're not using a premium ball, you're not going to get much spin around the green regardless of technique. Also, make sure your grooves are clean before the shot.

Additionally, if you're playing out of the rough you won't get the ball to bit either. You need a clean lie on short grass to get that bite. Getting backspin requires a faster clubhead speed with a downward strike of the ball. This doesn't necessarily mean taking a huge diviot, but the clubhead should be moving down and through in relation to the ball. Go to a practice green and try hitting very low pitch shots (visualize the ball going 1 foot off the ground) and you'll get the idea.

Here's a good video by Butch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HttXJN0u5E8

EDIT: Also, make sure you're not flipping the clubhead past your hands. Your lead hand (left if you're a right handed golfer) should be leading the clubhead throughout until after impact. Watch the video above and notice how at impact Butch is teaching a solid left arm and flat (to bowed) left wrist.

Awesome! Ive been using either Bridgestone 6s or Callaway Chromes lately. Thinking of switching to the Vice Pro Plusses. Ill work on the left hand lead. Thanks thats a great video.

If it's more spin you want then the Pro is a better ball than the Pro Plus.  Just like ProV1 and ProV1x

What kind of wedge is best for these type of shots? Love my SW near the green. Is it better to go w a 52ish degree or is the 56 ok and its more the lie/swing?

The 56 is fine.  I use my 60 and can spin it and hit it low when I need to (when I have a 60 with grooves in it that is)

Hit a few of these type of shots before am. Got a lil bit of grab on them. Not quite course ready but looking forward to having this shot in the arsenal hopefully soon

High spin ball. Grooves in good condition. Accelerate through the ball. Perfect contact. Firmer and faster greens will show you more too.

Just my two cents but I find spin overvalued by most amateurs. It's nice to have in the arsenal but it feels like a lot of players view it as some magic bullet.

You say you're getting roll-out but how much are we talking? I've spent countless hours working on opening a 60 for shorter flop shots that mostly drop dead but my preference is generally to keep the ball low and roll it when I have a chance. Closer and safer more often.

Yeah i agree w the overrated part for sure. But as a mid to low 80s guy im nitpicking my game and adding shots to the arsenal now.

My go to shot inside 50 has just been a chip w my 56 degree. I get a decent amount (20 feet) of rollout because i get a little flippy through the ball. So having to aim short leaes me in trouble with hills or not much green to work with.

The thought here is in a scrambling situation on a par 4 or GIR chip on a long 5 id like to get my putts within 15 more often to give me a better chance at birdie.

I dont have a 60 in the arsenal. Its on my list of clubs to add this yr. That and maybe a 3wood. Ive hesitated there because i hit my 3irom hybrid about 235 straight so the value of an extra few yards hasnt been worth it for me yet

Having a 60 in the bag is nice. It's a bit tougher to hit that a 56 on full shots (IMO). You can get in trouble with it and distance control can be more questionable.

Where it is gold is around the green when you don't have a lot of surface to work with. Being able to open it up and land softly is invaluable. The grind and bounce options now are crazy--I was looking at the Vokey website and it's like candyland compared to a decade ago.

FWIW, I ditched my 3-wood years ago and just carry a 19 degree 5-wood. I was wild with the 3-wood but I knock the 5 about 210-225 and it's easy to hit. Don't need more than that off the deck.

Central MA (moved out of Boston a few weeks ago), could make it happen on a weekend. Kind of booked in June but if you want to try to get out there July/August I think that can work. IIRC Phragelrock is around here too. Game is a mess since I haven't played much the past three years but I'm trying to hit the range once a week right now. Irons are manageable but my driver is a hook-machine. Short game is beyond rusty. It's really frustrating but the occasional good shot is keeping me coming back.

Carded an 82 from the tips at Poquoy Brook (73 / 126 6800 yards). Had a shot at breaking 80 but tripled the 17th. Hit a bomb of a tee shot that carried into a brook 270 out. Dropped 3rd and hit it over the green into a rose bush and had to chip out. Lipped out a 6 footer as well.

Overall nice course and I have to recommend the Srixon XV to anyone with a 105 swing speed or up. Long off the tee (waa 250-260 most of the day) and was able to get some bite on my chip shots near the green, thanks to the tips in this thread. Birdied back to back holes for the first time ever.

I've been having a hell of a time this summer. Last year I finished at a 16, was in the mid-low 90s pretty much every round with some in the 80's. Starting this year, I've been struggling to even break 100. It's been a combination of things, short game, getting the shanks again (plagued me two summers ago), not being able to get off the tee consistently. No idea what's going on, but it's been a rough ride so far. Then I went out yesterday, didn't feel like I played particularly well, and shot a 91 at a tough course (Marlborough CC). Golf is a weird weird game.

Most of my game is trending the right way I think, except getting off the tee. My driver is all over the place right now, which is even more frustrating because that's usually the most consistent part of my game.

Golf is ridiculous. On Wednesday, I played Waverly Oaks and hit the ball by far the best and most consistent I ever have before. Tee and approach shots were great. Then three-putted like every hole. But I felt good about hitting the ball so well. Ended with a 94. On Sunday, we played Atlantic and played horribly, back to inconsistent shots. Hit one or two well, hit one terrible. But I putted okay with almost all easy two-putts. Ended with 100. Yesterday I played 9 at Wentworth Hills and played okay all around, but had two blow up holes. 45. All leaving me around the same 90-100 scores, with completely different ways of getting there.

One of these days soon I hope to put it all together. I think consistent 80s is around the corner, but who knows.

What kind of shape was Atlantic in? I played 27 at Crosswinds on Saturday (52-48-50....blech) and it was in great shape. Last time I played Atlantic 2 years ago it was pretty gross.

Atlantic was in good shape. Not great, but Waverly was not in the pristine condition you would expect either. Atlantic is about where you would expect to be as the cheapest of the four courses right down there.

One of these times when I'm in town we'll all get together and play and I can help give some tips to some of you guys. It's easy to break 90 once you figure out a few key things.

Plus it'll be fun to go out and smash it around with some of you.

I'll be home to Plymouth in July for my dad's 65th, and plan on one, if not both, of Crosswinds and Waverly.  It's been a long time since I have played either of them.

I played here in New Mexico yesterday and was really excited to get out as I had been hitting great at the range and on the putting green.  I proceeded to have my worst round of the year.  I couldn't do anything right, where normally I have been like Leon's story above, where something works but something else holds me back.  Yesterday was just bad all around, too the point that I can't even tell you if I like the Vice golf balls because I didn't hit a single solid shot.  If it wasn't for playing with good people, it would have been a not fun round of golf.

I ended up playing 90 holes Thursday-Sunday this past week and man is this a frustrating game.  My major problem right now seems to be keeping focus through 18 complete holes, I am now attempting to break up a course into 3 - 6 hole segments to keep my head into each shot. I am flirting with breaking 80 for the first time in my life, (home course is a par 69) shot an 81 on Thursday, but on the 15th tossed up a triple due to just losing focus. The mental part of this game is killing me as I know I can hit certain shots, but I always seem to have 2 or 3 complete let downs a round that just ruin my chances at that 79.  I plan on taking a few days off from going out on the course and just practicing my wedge game from 75 yards and in and putting each night.

I've been able to play each of the past two weekends. It's only been 9 holes each weekend, but at least I'm getting out there. 42-46 playing the back 9 of Hickory Hill. Hole to hole consistency is my biggest problem. I've had 6 pars and a birdie...still adds up to an 88. Can't seem to avoid disaster holes. The middle of my rounds seems to be when things go off the rails. I tend to compound mistakes which turns bogey's into triples.

Anyways, back at it next weekend. Tee times set, aiming for a 36 hole weekend.

And then I go out today, can't get off the tee (again), get the shanks to a tune of a 10 on a par 5, and shoot a 50 on an easy course. Aggravating.

Do you watch the golf fix at all? Breeds awesome at simple cues, which is all that works for me.

I sent someone else down to Mike Lynott in Raynham last year as well and they had very positive feedback. Old school guy, affordable, simple cues.

For me its just keep right arm tight on the backswing, head down, full turn, fire down the line. I was a total mess early last year. Very inconsistent. Hes helped me get down to a 10ish.

I don't watch it, I get leery of trying to incorporate different stuff that's not tailored to my swing, I could be messing something up. Granted, it's not like what I'm doing now is actually working.

I don't need/want a swing overhaul, namely because I don't have the time to truly practice it to get it to stick. But I'm sure there are a couple tweaks that will at least prevent me from dead shanking it.

If anyone would like to join us, shoot me a PM.  Going to play somewhere between Boston and Providence I'd imagine around 10am...

In all seven rounds I've played so far this season, my back nine has been at least 5 strokes better than my front. Monday was 49/41. Frustrating as hell. I'm hitting a small bucket and putting for about five minutes before hand, but I'm not sure what else I can do. I guess start drinking earlier, maybe the swing oil isn't lubricating early on.

My clubfitter has had my clubs for almost two weeks. I'm a couple days aways from a murder-suicide.

Also do any of you guys know where I can find a putter with no offset and a 45-60 degree toe hang? Maybe there is a database or something? Or at least a no offset putter with adjustable weights so I can manipulate the toe hang. I know Seemore makes something close, but I don't like the looks or the lie angle. SC makes the Newport 2.6 but then I'm paying 250 for a used one plus the weights I need and I don't want to spend that much. I think Nike makes the Mod-90 but it's the same price as the Camerons.

Yup, worth trying at least--some people are made for those things. Also worth trying is lead tape on whatever his putter is right now. Very handy for messing with overall putter weight and heel-toe balance. Apply liberally to the sole, toe, and heel and mess around with the ratios. Too many people feel buying a new putter is some sort of magic bullet.

Yeah maybe. Most center shafted putter are face balanced but my fitter says I need some toe hang. Just not as much as my current Ping O-blade has. I think I'm just looking for a cheaper Newport 2.6. That looks perfect.

I think lead tape is my next move. I know there's no magic bullet but I can feel that the toe is too heavy in my stroke.

My club fitter cut the shafts on my wedges (3) more than I asked. I've yet to get him on the phone, but what do you guys think I should do or ask for? I'd like to tell him to replace the shafts and cut them the right length for free, but IDK.

Assuming you were clear about how much you wanted them cut down, it sounds like he owes you replacement shafts cut to the correct length. Are you sure it was too much? I would think an inch less on a wedge would feel like a huge change.

Man, I just can't figure out my swing. Driver is just way off, irons are inconsistent, everything feels wrong. I have just enough good shots thought to make me think that it's not totally lost. Going for a lesson on Thursday to see if I can get some working tips to focus on to at least get me back to even. Frustrating right now.

I need a new pair of shoes. Talk to me about the sneakers spikeless options. They look very comfortable but I'm curious 1) how well they grip and 2) whether the soles wear down quickly.

I would think walking along the cart path, club house, parking lot would wear down the textured soles requiring frequent replacement. I guess there's a savings not having to keep replacing soft spikes on traditional shoes, but my course replaces soft spikes for free anyway.

I completely feel you on this. My game is so incredibly frustrating right now. I go play 18 holes and a regular 9 will include on average 1 birdie, 4 pars, 2 bogeys, and then 2 triples or snowmen. I know I can play well, but I can't get rid of these mental break downs that just ruin my rounds.

The other day my round consisted of 9 holes that in total I played even, and 9 holes that I played +22, I just don't get it.

I was worried about all this as well when I first made the switch to spikeless and none of it was an issue. Plenty of traction and I got about 75-80 round out of my first pair - actually a stitch ripped before the soles wore down. They are super comfortable. I'm kind of an Adidas whore when it comes to athletic footwear, they just fit my foot best, so I rock the Adicross, but I've heard great things about the Eccos too, they're just way more expensive.
