This was a good article. Starters not showing up for voluntary infield practice before a Dodgers game, guys being late for meetings and buses, endless team meetings that changed nothing. Pretty much what everyone assumed.

Machado clearly has a lot of power and influence, he just isn’t using it to be a leader.

In an otherwise completely forgettable season for St. Louis, Adam Wainwright tosses 7 shutout innings at home against the Brewers and gets win #200 tonight.

He's 3rd in franchise history behind Gibson and Jesse Haines.

Pressley blows a two-run lead in the 9th, Baltimore beats Houston and lead AL East by 2 1/2. Orioles now only two games behind Atlanta for best record in the majors.

p.s. Second game in a row with a Baltimore 9th inning comeback after being down after 8. They only had one such win the whole season prior to yesterday

Cora might be a good match for the Padres.

Does anyone want to win the West? If they didn't have to play each other the last two weeks and guarantee someone a win, the Yankees could sneak into the playoffs.

What a brutal loss for the Astros... Mariners back to 1.5 out and tied with Texas.

Rays also have to be miffed at Ryan Pressly, Orioles back to a 2.5 game lead.

Blue Jays 84-67, remaining games: @NYY (2), @TB (3), NYY (3), TB (3)
Astros 84-68, remaining games: BAL (1), KC (3), @SEA (3), @ARI (3)
Rangers 83-68, remaining games: BOS (1), SEA (3), @LAA (3), @SEA (4)
Mariners 83-68, remaining games: @OAK (1), @TEX (3), HOU (3), TEX (4)

One of these teams won't make the playoffs. This is insanely close and could easily come down to the last day, October 1.

Notable tiebreakers (remember there are no longer any game 163s):

-Toronto over Houston
-Texas over Toronto
-Seattle over Houston (Seattle has clinched already, 8 out of 10 with 3 to go)
-Houston over Texas
-Texas over Seattle (won 5 of 6, just need two more)

=================

D-backs 80-72, remaining games: SF (1), @NYY (3), @CWS (3), HOU (3)
Cubs 79-72, remaining games: PIT (1), COL (3), @ATL (3), @MIL (3)
Marlins 79-73, remaining games: NYM (2), MIL (3), @NYM (3), @PIT (3)
Reds 79-74, remaining games: MIN (1), PIT (3), @CLE (2), @STL (3)

Two of these teams won't make the playoffs. The Reds are pretty behind the 8-ball at this point, but the three teams in front of them have at least one tough series left.

Notable tiebreakers:

-Miami over everyone (Cincinnati is 3-3, but worse intradivision record clinched already)
-Reds over Arizona
-Arizona over Chicago
-Chicago has no tiebreakers in their favor

Story today about Kyle Schwaber’s season stat line - he’s out-Adam-Dunning Adam Dunn’s 2012 season.

So far as I can tell, Schwaber is on pace to be the first ever player to hit below .200 and score over 100 runs. Joey Gallo’s 2021 appears to be the closest to this achievement - .199 and 90R.

Thanks so much for this recap. Haven't had a chance to follow the race the past week so this is a fantastic catch up for the last two week of the season.

Hunter Greene might be my favorite pitcher to watch in baseball. He's had some rocky starts throughout his career, but his stuff is just insane. 14ks through 7 innings for Cincy right now.

There's also the Giants, who only have one more loss than the Reds. But they have a brutal remaining schedule - 7 against the Dodgers and 3 against the suddenly hot Padres.

I was there yesterday and his stuff was electric. But the vibe suddenly changed in the 8th inning when he was out of the game. I just knew the Reds were going to waste his effort. That is the kind of game that a team that knows how to win wins, the Reds are not there yet.

Has a manager been fired this season? If not, is that par for the course lately or unusual?

None, and I think that's very unusual.

From my googling...last season, there were 4.

During the 2022 Major League Baseball season, firing managers was all the rage. The Phillies canned Joe Girardi on June 3, the Angels axed Joe Maddon a few days later, the Blue Jays terminated Charlie Montoya in mid-July and the Rangers got rid of Chris Woodward in mid-August.

Brewers just put up a 12-run inning in the second in Miami. Everyone in the lineup got a hit and scored a run.

Cubs the only winner in the NL WC contender group today.

Re: Giants - they basically have waived the white flag calling up kids, so I didn't include them. Right at .500

Rangers back in first in the ALWest, by a half-game over the Astros, who lost at home to the Royals.

Nothing unites people more than a common enemy. The Padres players, particularly Machado, all pushed back on the media reporting that the team doesn’t like each other and has problems.

Maybe it created an “us vs them” mentality that has fueled them lately, but it’s likely too late.

With the upper management move to Chris Getz, I wonder if Pedro Grifol gets a second year with the White Sox. I haven't seen any evidence this year that he understands what the job of a major league manager entails. I'd have thought anyone following Tony LaRussa would look like a genius by comparison.

From ESPN...Anthony Rendon finally shut down for the season.

What a horrible, horrible, horrible signing.

"Signed to a seven-year, $245 million deal with the Angels before the 2020 season, his time in the American League has been injury-riddled. The most games the former Washington Nationals star has played with the Angels in his four seasons were the 58 he logged in 2021. He has batted .249 with 22 home runs and 111 RBIs in 200 games during his time with Los Angeles."

Yet amazingly still the better of the two 7/245 deals given to WAS players that offseason, as the other was to Strasburg.

Cubs were down 3-1, then scored 1 in the 5th, 6th and 7th and two in the 8th to win 6-3 over Colorado. Hope Cincinnati and Miami can get back to winning to keep the NL WC race fun for the last 7 days.

Meanwhile, Miami went up 4-0 but left Luzardo in too long, and it took Puk 3 pitches to give up a game tying, 3 run home run.

The AL playoff picture is looking like a clusterfuck at the moment. BAL/TB at the "top" are limping to the finish line, and the next-highest win total is Toronto at 86.

Astros trailing the Royals again, this time 3-0 in the fifth. Could Houston actually fail to make the playoffs?

As long as they don't get swept by Seattle they should be OK with Seattle and Texas beating each other up. Although losing to the Royals is not good.

The Rangers have just clinched the season series and thus the tiebreaker against the Mariners. However.... the Astros keep fumbling it away, so Seattle still has an out if they can't handle the Rangers.

The race for 3 spots:

Texas 86-68, current #2(!) seed in AL, tiebreakers over: TOR, SEA
Toronto 86-69, tiebreaker over: HOU
Houston 85-70, tiebreaker over: TEX
Seattle 84-70, tiebreaker over: HOU, TOR (3-3 head to head but much much better intradivision)

==================

I am leaving the Reds off after that embarrassment. 79-77.

The race for 2 spots:

Arizona 81-73, tiebreaker over: CHI
Chicago 81-74
Miami 80-75, tiebreakers over: ARI, CHI
