Trevor Stephan somehow squeezes his way out of a bases loaded, 1 out jam, Cleveland goes to the bottom of the 7th up 4-3 on Toronto.

That was a real slugfest today – more runs than had been scored in the first 3 games of the series combined. Seriously though, it's nice to see them win with a lineup that included four guys I watched playing in AA just two years ago.

Next up: The Guards face the guy they just traded – Aaron Civale (it will also be their first game against the Rays this year).

Rays gave up 3 runs on no hits or errors (3 walks, HBP, 3 wild pitches) in one of the kookiest blown saves ever, then Franco hit a walk off bomb on the 3rd pitch of the next half-inning anyways.

As if BAL isn't loaded enough with young talent, Gunnar Henderson now looks like he will win ROY going away and get them yet another first round pick and more draft pool money.

I'm curious why you are sure of this. Besides defense, what separates him from Casas?

The Orioles, however, do not appear ready to slow down this Seattle team. A single and a Raleigh home run and Gibson has spotted them a 2 run lead within 7 pitches.

Haha, besides offense, what separates Judge from Verdugo?

Henderson is already one of the best defensive SSs in baseball and seems to be getting better every day, 3.4 bWAR in 367 ABs and 1.5 of that is since the last time I checked in early July. Casas is hitting great and also getting better as the season progresses,, but because he has a -5 DRS to Henderson's 11 and where they are on the defensive spectrum, he only has a 1.2 bWAR in 325 ABs.

I was just curious.

ARI was 46-30 on June 22, 98 win pace for almost a full half season.

Since then they are 11-29, 45 win pace for a quarter of a season, almost exactly the same as OAK’s historically bad winning percentage pace.

They are only a few games back of the final wild card because some other teams have cratered too but yikes.

I thought Adam Wainwright could have had an outside shot at the HOF with a few more decent years. This year, he is 3-7 with an absurd 8.78 ERA after getting absolutely shelled last night. He’s given up 71 runs in 66 inning. 14 HR, a 2.09 WHiP, and -1.8 WAR. This is like Smoltz with the Sox (of course Smoltz then redeemed himself with 7 good starts in St Louis).

Tough way to go out.

Gavin Williams over his last 2 starts: 12 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 22 K. EDIT: ...and zero wins. Cleveland's last rookie to strike out 22 in 2 starts was Herb Score.

If this team ever got a healthy rotation of Bieber, McKenzie, Williams, Bibee and Logan, they could win a lot of games even with the anemic offense.

At least they have a plan!
I mean, they do. If they lose enough to get a top six draft pick (after the lottery), then their first round pick is not moved back ten spots this year as it would be otherwise. It's not the plan they had a few months ago, but it's most definitely a plan.

I'm being mostly facetious, but sure, they have a plan. I guess, to me, a real plan is something that is a longer term road map, not something that changes every half season. Or maybe that's the difference between a strategy and a plan.

I think the plan to an extent has remained constant since the 2021 deadline, after they got burned very badly trading Pete Crow-Armstrong (now a top 20 prospect in MLB) for a two month Javy Baez rental. Since then, their 'plan' is to spend unlimited amounts on MLB players but not to touch the farm system and this deadline they even added a twist by selling off veterans to speed up the farm system's maturation.

It's great to have a long-term strategy if it works, it's also great to recognize when it's not working and cut bait, which is what they did at this deadline.

Both Seattle and Baltimore’s closers top out at 102. Have the Red Sox ever had someone throw that hard? Where can we find them?
