This is, without question, horseshit.

If the goal is to win as many WS as possible, you maximize the future window by selling.I don't understand why this is difficult to understand.
The goal is to win the World Series as many times as possible before you die. It's not remotely clear what path is best for that, and quite frankly, the error bars on all of this are big enough that there might not be a definitively better path.
We're clearly a pretty good team while also clearly not being in the top tier of teams. That's going to be a troublesome spot to be in for any team in any sport.
Making deals to avoid the last wild card would also be malpractice. But not selling guys like Duvall and Paxton is smart?
If they traded Paxton for the Verlander package that would be malpractice?Making deals to avoid the last wild card would also be malpractice.
they did exactly that in 2021 with Schwarber, who was injured at the time the sox got him..... and shockingly the Boston media ripped the trade...I've always loved to see a team built w/a young core, etc. Personally, I mostly like the current approach.
BUT, this is a major market with really high ticket prices. The fanbase at large is going to grow impatient, and that will translate to ownership becoming frustrated with Bloom.
At some point, people need to see a creative move that makes the team better for the playoff run. Bloom's comments are not going to resonate well at all with the fanbase and media - I know most posters don't care, but it will impact ownership's view on things.
If that was offered, they would have done it. No one offered the value of 2 months of Paxton + the value of the QO for 2 months of Paxton, so they didn't sell Paxton. If they traded Paxton for the Verlander package that would be malpractice?
Pretty sure we’d be having a no pants party.
You neither piss away your chance of winning this year nor shorten the window. If the goal is to win as many WS as possible, you maximize the future window by selling.
If the goal is to win this year, you buy.
How does standing pat help accomplish the goal of winning as many WS as possible?
Agree. Chaim knows better that to empty the farm for a guy on a heater. And Snell was atrocious for like 6 weeks earlier this year. This is, without question, horseshit.
You don’t sell because the team is pretty good and has a lot of in house help on the way. Maybe they get hot and you get like a 95th percentile outcome out of the returning players. If the goal is to win as many WS as possible, you maximize the future window by selling.
If the goal is to win this year, you buy.

That move was a classic Bloom move. Hindsight makes everyone think it was great, but they needed a 1b at the time and he found a failed catcher-turned-of on the cheap to shoehorn into the 1b position. Value!they did exactly that in 2021 with Schwarber, who was injured at the time the sox got him..... and shockingly the Boston media ripped the trade...

So I dont give hoot what the media thinks, since they are just in it for click and engagement... that goes even more so for "sports talk radio" which is a cancer on society
Didn't the fact that you think we'd be having a no pants party suggest to you that the question you're asking is bullshit? If they traded Paxton for the Verlander package that would be malpractice?
Pretty sure we’d be having a no pants party.
The FO would be having one too. They would have traded Paxton for a haul. Clearly they didn't feel like the offers were better than what he will provide for the rest of this season + what the QO will yieldIf they traded Paxton for the Verlander package that would be malpractice?
Pretty sure we’d be having a no pants party.
He can pinch hit for Casas in September.I mean, they didn't even let Dalbec get a chance elsewhere
I get that. I don’t get why a 40 YO Verlander >> 34 YO Paxton. Control can’t trump 6 years of age by that much. The FO would be having one too. They would have traded Paxton for a haul. Clearly they didn't feel like the offers were better than what he will provide for the rest of this season + what the QO will yield
Well, if Turner is hurt more than d2d, they probably need Dalbec. But he will probably be freed this off season.I mean, they didn't even let Dalbec get a chance elsewhere
Well, there is talent too. A 39 year old Verlander won the Cy Young award. Paxton has had one terrific month in 4 yearsI get that. I don’t get why a 40 YO Verlander >> 34 YO Paxton. Control can’t trump 6 years of age by that much.
How about quality on top of it? Verlander is better historically, better currently, playoff tested, and whatever one makes of the age difference he has pitched 200 more innings that Paxton in the last two years. If you ignore age the control + performance makes the comparison kind of laughable.I get that. I don’t get why a 40 YO Verlander >> 34 YO Paxton. Control can’t trump 6 years of age by that much.
again, I don’t think this is true. Paxton could have been traded for a haul of prospects….but there would have been a hole in the rotation. The FO would be having one too. They would have traded Paxton for a haul. Clearly they didn't feel like the offers were better than what he will provide for the rest of this season + what the QO will yield
Lots of people argued for this approach. Lots of people predicted this outcome. It's so easy to understand no one was arguing for this approach before it happened.
Exactly. You give yourself a chance to see what happens this year, with a pretty good team, without weakening your future position. You neither piss away your chance of winning this year nor shorten the window.
Sounds like a planExactly. You give yourself a chance to see what happens this year, with a pretty good team, without weakening your future position.
"We're happy with the guys we've got in this room and we're confident in what we can accomplish." James Paxton on the Red Sox making only one move at the trade deadline.
The best player on the team and one of the biggest leaders would say otherwise
Who is the best player on the team? I bet we wouldn't all agree on that one. Also, what players respond when asked questions by sports reporters doesn't necessarily represent deeply felt emotions. The best player on the team and one of the biggest leaders would say otherwise
What’s the list of teams that desperately traded their way into the playoffs, lost anyway, and screwed themselves long term? Guess it’s more than two.Being the last team into the tournament is not that much of a long shot. Washington and Atlanta were both mediocre teams by stats on paper that nonetheless managed to hoist the trophy.
Raffy is their franchise player, and I would bet he's just fine tonight.Who is the best player on the team? I bet we wouldn't all agree on that one. Also, what players respond when asked questions by sports reporters doesn't necessarily represent deeply felt emotions.
To me it’s easy to know how Devers feels.Who is the best player on the team? I bet we wouldn't all agree on that one. Also, what players respond when asked questions by sports reporters doesn't necessarily represent deeply felt emotions.
I'm slightly annoyed Bloom didn't sell some parts but wow they avoided a bullet here. Snell sucks. Guy is a mirage and has been for most of his career. 4 bb/9 rate just isn't happening in the AL East unless he would somehow continue to have a high 80 lob rate.
Gotta have someone prominent to lowball and lose to a West Coast team during the off-season or it just wouldn't feel right.I have to believe part of keeping Paxton is with an eye to an extension.
I've never been more certain of anything in my life than I am that Chaim did not offer that package for a Snell rental.I'm slightly annoyed Bloom didn't sell some parts but wow they avoided a bullet here. Very glad they didn't do that.
I can't see him offering even one of those guys.I've never been more certain of anything in my life than I am that Chaim did not offer that package for a Snell rental.
I could only see it if Kim was included too. But even then, that doesn't sound accurate. Flies in the face of everything he has been saying re: rentals vs cost controlled.I can't see him offering even one of those guys.
"Reports indicate" is the tell that this is bullshit. That term is too slippery.
Frankly, if Chaim didn’t have any faith in this team’s chances then he would’ve sold. He didn’t, so he must believe they’re capable of making a run.Prolly what’s most important isn’t what the “media” or the “fans” response to what Bloom did or didn’t do, it’s what the players feel. I bet they are pretty stoked that Bloom valued them enough to keep them all around (sorry Kike). We will find out tonight in Seattle I suppose.
100% made up for twitter clout-chasingThis is, without question, horseshit.
What major league team has improved their long term outlook more the past 8 months than the Red Sox? Be specificManagement of this team continues to underwhelm.
It is not ok to be both a long time fan and be critical of what Bloom is doing? It’s not hard to figure out who has been a fan for 30-35+ years and who became a fan while the team has won titles every 4-5 seasons in threads like this.
Oh, cool, we’ve reached the fan purity test portion of the discussion. FWIW, I’ve been a fan for 30+ years and wanted to see a more aggressive approach. Guess I broke your algorithm. It’s not hard to figure out who has been a fan for 30-35+ years and who became a fan while the team has won titles every 4-5 seasons in threads like this.
