If the Lakeshow can get their act together and make this work, I'm kinda looking forward to the renaissance of the natural Warriors-Lakers rivalry that somehow rarely is. They were #1-2 in the Pacific Division in the first four years after it was formed — 1970-1974 — and have not been there since, or really anywhere close. On the rare occasions between the Barry and Curry eras that the Warriors have been good, the Lakers have not been; and the last Lakers dynasty waned just as the Curry Warriors waxed.

Bring it on!

boston just needs to sit tight i wouid re-sign smart and see if IT wouild come back as a vet min guy
I think a lot of us would love that but there seems to be too many roadblocks. Doesn’t he still want to be a starter? Is that bridge (him in BOS) burned?

Trading for a player who only wants to be somewhere else, and given up strong assets to do so, doesn't seem like smart business practice to me
Worked out for Sam Presti, at least insofar as the tactical goal of retaining that traded-for player by selling him on the plans and environment of the team.

I'm shocked he made this move before they acquired Kawhi. Now Boogie is out of the picture too? If Pop won't deal with LA, this is a bizarre play.

Actually its a brilliant move. Cuts Spurs off at the knees. Deal Kahwi now and get something or he goes to the Lakers next year as a FA and you get nada, zippo, zero, zilch.

Unlike signing PG none of these moves forestall the Lakers from having enough space for Kahwi in 2019. If Pop won't move Mr. Leonard, I would expect a large one year deal for Randle as well. Roll that cap space on over.

This is equivalent to my current love life--"she just needs to spend more time with me, then she'll want to be with me!"

I'm a huge Kawhi fan and have beat the "deal Kyrie for him" drum to death. BUT Kawhi clearly wants to go to LA, and now it makes a lot of sense for him to head to the LeLakers next season. No need to chase him down.

Question: Is there any way that Kawhi, not playing for Pop, falls outside of being a top 5 player? for example, we all know Brad puts his players in the best position to succeed and they outperform in Green.

LeBron and Lance on the SAME TEAM

This is a GREAT signing on the cheap by the Lakers. Get some edge on that team with Lance and Kantavious. Gotta love how they are adding to LeBron while waiting of Kawhi next summer without having to give up an asset if that's what it comes down to.

I see the logic you posit about SAS getting nothing and so the Lakers can wait them out. However, that assumes Lebron is on board for letting one of his prime years of basketball slip by. Lebron may be on board. But he may be telling Magic "I want Kahwi and I want him NOW!" In which case, SAS may be in the driver's seat.

I don't know, but we should learn soon.

KCP at 1/12 is a nice piece of trade salary filler that's not dead weight.

If I were Danny, I'd be pretty damn confident in the organization's ability to sell him on staying.
Sure. But Danny knows a lot more of the back end stuff and he doesn’t gamble like that with an asset like Brown. Lebron to LA basically makes the East ours for the foreseeable future. The risks brought on by moving Brown for an injured KL for one year to take a shot at GS aren’t worth the reprecussions that could ensue if he walks - and frankly, there’s nothing but hope and green colored glasses to think he wouldn’t.

Let Kawhi and Bron Bron burn a year or Magic overpaying Pop. No difference on our end, we have the bullets in house to compete as best we can AND not mortgage the future.

Resign Smart, have a nice summer and go to war.

If the Celtics can get Kawhi for either the Sac or Memphis pick, a future Celtics pick and filler I’d do it but that’s nowhere near the best offer that will be on the table. No chance I give up Brown for 1 year of Kawhi with questions about his health; Brown/Tatum + the stack of picks virtually guarantees the Cs are contenders even after Kyrie/Hayward/Horford leave or start fading.

Brown? Nope. Sac 2019? Nope. Memphis? I might consider rolling the dice.

I'm still completely fascinated that big time players want to play with LeBron. He's great, your team will be good. But has a really good player ever come out looking better from playing with LeBron? Kyrie maybe? But in some ways LeBron hid how good he is. Bosch maybe?

Yeah, you've got a good chance getting a ring if you're alongside him, but if you lose, you're taking all of the heat.
Bosch? The TD Garden of Earthly Delights?

This.

Let LeBron/LAL spins their wheels and burn rubber in the west. He gets older and burnt out. And betweem LAL/OKC/Hou/GSW they pound the crap out of each other.

Celts have to get by Philly.

This is similar to how the '80s Lakers won championships.

Its the model for the current Celts.

I hear you, but if Kawhi at any cost was a condition precedent, then Lebron doesn’t sign on 7/1. He keeps the leverage and remains a FA.

That's what she said.
"Hey KCP, you get one year to play with me and get paid like Trevor Ariza just did somewhere else... Make it count."

Lebron has been orchestrating this for two years now. I certainly hope Magic and Palinka don't get, or expect, any credit for whatever comes next. The only credit they get is allowing Klutch Sports run their team and not allow them to pick up anymore contracts to fuck this up for Lebron.

Now watch Lebron do Cleveland a solid and send Lonzo to Cleveland for Korver just to get him out of town...

Trevor Ariza is a big loss for Houston, and we all know how durable CP3 is. I think LAL is the second best team in the West now. They will finish 2nd in the Pacific but will easily be a 2-4 seed.

Yes ... because Paul George and Kahwi Leonard are exactly the same person

Houston won 65 games last year. Paul played in 58 games in regular season. If they bring Capela back, I don’t see LA passing them.

The Spurs have been basically the smartest organization in basketball for two decades. The Kawhi situation is bizzare but whatever they decide to do I’m going to believe is the right decision.

If LA doesn’t add another all star; LeBron doesn’t really have a better supporting cast than he did in Cleveland. So he’ll be in the same situation, except in a much tougher conference and with higher expectations.

I think Kawhi gets over it, if he plays well, stays with Spurs and becomes a gajillionaire.
I think this scenario most of all scares the Lakers into getting it done.

LA is his first choice right now, as Paul George showed, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll be his first choice a year from now. Have to get him in while you can.

Barring the Kawhi trade, this is a really subpar team they've put together. I hope the spurs don't cave and let lebron burn a year with this crap.

Biggest reason is LeBron turns 34 in December. He can’t afford to punt any seasons at his age. This Lakers team will obviously be better with him but literally nobody else on that team scares me.
