“@Eagles: Eagles Release Head Coach Chip Kelly: https://t.co/oOkQ3eITpl
Today, Jeffrey Lurie, Chairman and CEO of the Philadelphia Eagles, released Head Coach Chip Kelly.

"We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward," said Lurie.

Coach Pat Shurmur will be interim head coach for Sunday's game against the New York Giants.

Ed Marynowitz, vice president of player personnel, was also released. Tom Donahoe, former GM of the Buffalo Bills and director of football operations for the Pittsburgh Steelers and senior football advisor for the Eagles since 2012, will assume the role of senior director of player personnel.

A press conference will be held Wednesday, December 30 at the NovaCare Complex at Noon with Lurie.

With one game remaining? I guess Lurie was not down with having a lame duck in Philly.

I like that he had lots of new ideas because most of the NFL is made up of people who won't take risks. Not cool that they gave him personnel power and didn't let him see it through.

I want him as a consultant to the Pats, as long as he can't even whisper in Bill's ear about roster construction :)

The Titans' coaching search will be thorough. I am sure they will consider Chip Kelly to some degree, like a lot of guys. Automatically putting him in Tennessee is too-easy dot connecting. Marcus Mariota can thrive under a lot of different coaches. Seems to me it's Kelly who needs Mariota, not the other way around.

Kind of awful timing for the Eagles, since firing him now accentuates the organizational damage. But perhaps he gave Lurie no choice.

Would love to have seen what he could have done with a QB that fit his system.

I'm not surprised media types were waiting to pounce, but this one surprised me:

treywingo: Chip Kelly revolutionized nothing in the NFL. Everything he tried to do had been done before by other coaches only better

Last winter the question du jour was "Is Chip Kelly the next Bill Belichick?"

I guess if they were talking about completely failing their first head coaching gig, then yes they were were right. I don't think that's what they were going for though.

If Belichick "completely failed" in Cleveland how would you describe the performance of their subsequent eight head coaches?

But your point still stands.

Texas is not firing Charlie Strong this offseason.*

A&M is a much higher probability. I think he takes off next season to see what is available, don't see a NFL head coaching job coming right now for him.

* Unfortunately.

Good riddance! Any way we can get DeSean, Maclin and Shady back? Happy to return Kiko if it helps...

“@cpriceNFL: Belichick & Chip are pals. Have to believe BB will at least vouch for him if he’s looking for a new gig.”

“@cpriceNFL: Also wouldn’t be a shock to see Kelly show up in Foxboro in some form or fashion if he doesn’t go after another HC gig immediately.”

Ehhh, the guy never had a good QB and no coach in the NFL can succeed without a good QB over an extended period. Its the only thing that matters these days. I don't think Chip did anything impressive besides alienating his best players and fan base, but determining whether he was a good coach or not when he had to start the garbage he did at QB isn't fair, either.

It's why the NFL is devolving into a terrible product. good QB? then playoff contender every year. mediocre QB? then mediocrity every year. Bad QB? no chance.

yes, that was a bit harsh. there was a lot at play with BB in Cleveland, but it wasn't a success by any means for many reasons.

Total speculation, but wouldn't this firing come awfully early unless they had a specific plan? Lurie is going to address the media tomorrow, but it wouldn't surprise me if Kelly got into it with Lurie and forced the issue. Because it makes no sense to can him now; there's no advantage to it.

Of course, if the Eagles go out and win 42-14, maybe Lurie didn't need forcing.

ESPN's Sal Paolantonio says Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie had been thinking about making changes in the structure of the Eagles organization for weeks, including stripping head coach Chip Kelly of control of personnel. They met recently and Kelly balked at the idea. That's when Lurie decided to part ways with Kelly, so that the Eagles could get a jump on some of the hot assistant coaches who will be eligible.

“@cpriceNFL: Belichick goes to bat for his guys in times like this. Not saying Kelly would be OC. But can see him acting as part of BB’s kitchen cabinet.”

How many of those assistants are going to sign on to more front office turmoil?

has any college coach really been successful making first transition to NFL? here's a list of last 15 years...
Saban
Spurrier
Ericksen
Kelly
Schiano
Brooks
Kiffin
Riley
Petrino
B Davis

Successes:
Jim Harbaugh
Pete Carroll (failed miserably first)
Jimmy Johnson was obviously the best but that was 20+ years ago now

Man, that is an awful list and I think I'm missing some. Dennis Green go straight from stanford?

I wouldn't be totally shocked to see Kelly come on board for some BS consulting job to end this season, but the idea that BB would hire Chip Kelly to run an offense featuring Tom Brady seems absurd.

Not sure how true that is, especially in the Afc

Likely Playoff qb's other than Brady:

Alex Smith
Weeden
Fitzpatrick
Dalton
Oz

Den and Hou are both playoff teams and have had far from good qb play. Drew Brees, Eli manning and Philip rivers will all be golfing in 6 days.
I don't think the qb is the end all be all you make it out to be.

Two (three depending in how you view Fitzpatrick) of those guys are injury replacements and another is currently injured and out indefinitely. Hardly emblematic of anything. Besides which the point was mediocre to bad QB play is not conducive to consistent success in the league. Other than Brady, the only QBthat has had any semblence of consistent success is Dalton...despite his post season goose egg, his teams have been five times.

@JayGlazer: Just talked to Chip Kelly, disappointed how it ended but knows it's a results-oriented biz. Insists he wants to remain in the NFL, not college. Was pulled into mtg w owner, said he didn't fight the decision.
