Wrexham play Shrewsbury Town (currently sitting at 15th in the League One table) in the FA Cup today at 9 am eastern, for anyone with ESPN+ who wants to catch a Wrexham match.
Season 3 coming much quicker than 1 & 2. I like that it will be more topical to the current season and happenings, hopefully with the same content that makes it so special.
Interesting. League doesn't even end until mid May I think, so they won't know the outcome while the first episodes air.

It could be really interesting this year -- top 3 go up and the next 4 have to play in a playoff. That would be high drama.
If the series is going to focus on the season and relegation/promotion I think that next year has the possibility to be more compelling. It's hard for a team with decent management to get relegated from League Two with only 2 going down. But once they get to League One, it could get more interesting, since 4 go down.

If they go with 15 weekly episodes they won't be far behind the league finale. They likely have their non-league segments shot and will edit the on-pitch results into those along the way. It's a good idea, having watched the first two seasons knowing where they landed took some of the drama out of it.
The team has hit quite a bit of a skid lately. I’ve watched pretty much every game this season, but I also have a very amateur knowledge of tactics. That said, it seems like it seems like they’ve relied on just playing long ball after long ball to Mullin with little success. They don’t seem to have found a 2nd option that can play forward with him to help create space and opportunities. Their goalkeeper, Okonkwo, had a very good start to the season but his play also seems to have dipped a bit lately to me.
They have a congested schedule this month that really seems like it could go a long way to deciding their season.
I’m hoping they start turning it around quickly. They have an away match on Tuesday against Sutton who are 2nd from bottom of the table. Then they are home on Saturday against Notts. I’ll be at that match and I’d really like to see a win.

Wrexham just beat Mansfield Town 2-0 to knock them off the top of the League Two table. It's now Stockport on top with 74 points (and a game in hand) with Mansfield Town and Wrexham on 73.

What's the deal with MK Dons? I can't say I'm that up on League Two other than Wrexham and of course their rivals last year Notts County.
It has to do with the controversial and unpopular move of Wimbledon FC to Milton Keynes about 20 years ago and their renaming as MK Dons (Wimbledon were the Dons). They’re geographically very far apart. AFC Wimbledon (I think) were founded to restore a team in South London that many feel was stolen from them.
Kinda like the original Cleveland Browns, who were very popular, moving to Baltimore (whose team had previously been “stolen” by Indianapolis) and replaced with the current Cleveland Browns a few years later.
Yeah, MK Dons is the former Wimbledon FC. Rather than create their own team and work their way through the divisions, the owners bought Wimbledon (at the time in the Championship) and moved them to Milton Keynes. The former fans of Wimbledon started AFC Wimbledon and started playing in the (I think) 9th division and worked their way up. At the moment both teams are in League Two, and there was actually one season when AFC Wimbledon played in League One with MK in League Two, so the MK owners' plan didn't work out so well.
I've said this in the past, but I'd probably let MK off the hook if they'd just drop the Dons name. Until then I hope they get relegated every year.

Wimbledon FC were an original member of the Premier League and won the FA Cup. They had a solid decade run in the top flight. I distinctly remember them when we watched this old weekly Premier League highlight show that ran in the early to mid 90s (we only got one game a week that ran on tape delay). That’s what made the move to Milton Keynes so striking. The Dons had recently been a pretty prominent club. They did have a stadium issue though. I remember them sharing Selhurst with Palace in those days.
Robert Irsay moving his team out of Baltimore in the middle of the night and taking the Colts name and history with him remains the U.S. nadir of these types of franchise moves. I know there are many other examples of teams moving and keeping the nickname in the new city, but taking the Colts legacy out of Baltimore and bringing it to a bland Midwestern city felt like an unnecessarily cruel move and one that frankly doesn't get the derision anymore that it really deserves. At least Modell left the Browns name behind.
In terms of teams moving and leaving behind a rabid fan base, I think the Baltimore Colts and [original] Cleveland Browns are probably at the top of that list. But I think the NBA wins the prize for holding on to franchise names, now meaningless, after a move. Unless I'm mistaken and there is a lot of Jazz in Utah and many Lakes in LA. |
I wouldn't. The franchise thing will always be a mark of Cain on them, but they continually compound it by arguing online that the relocation was the fault of Wimbledon fans 'abandoning' their club, which anyone who was around at the time knows isn't what happened (and is a gravely offensive thing to claim).
I'm with you, and it's something I'll always give them crap for. The good thing is that Wimbledon are in such a better place now, including returning to Plough Lane in a new stadium just down the street from where the old one was.
Wrexham beat Crawley Town 4-1. 5 points in their last 3 games (and probably 4, with their goal differential) will see them promoted to League One.
Crawley Town is in the playoff spots currently, so this was a solid win. Wrexham's next game is Saturday at home against bottom club Forest Green Rovers, so they are in great shape at the moment.

MK Dons and Mansfield Town play in MK this weekend. That could be a big game for Wrexham. Anything but an MK Dons win put them in good shape. And even an MK Dons win, gives them a second path viz. Mansfield Town, though they have to contend with a big goal differential.
To add to the last two posts, Wrexham has a semi outsized chance to clinch promotion this weekend with a win along with Barrow and MK Dons dropping points. Barrow has 5 games remaining, meaning if Wrexham beats FGR this weekend they would have to win out and make up a massive goal differential.
I am selfishly hoping for the stars to align this weekend as I sit at Anfield now for tonight’s Europa League match before heading down to Wrexham tomorrow to catch Saturdays Wrexham match.

Thanks. This will actually be my second match of the year. Also came over for the Notts County game in February. I’ve actually got 2 spares for this match if anyone happens to be in this neck of the woods this weekend.
Wrexham handling Forest Glenn, Barrow playing on ten men. All eyes turn to MK Dons who are level at the moment.
They didn’t figure to be in league two very long, but good for them for going up so quickly. League Two was never going to be very exciting for them — nearly impossible to go back down. League One should be exciting. Some big clubs that will test them, far more difficult promotion with only two automatic spots, and four going down every year means you have to keep pushing. It will be interesting to see how they stack up.
I’ll post some pics and videos later but suffice to say today has been maybe the most enjoyable live sports days of my life.

I’ll hand it to Wrexham, and the crew for the docu-series, their musical choices are always pretty awesome. Paul Mullin and the team with a Jamie Webster sing along. The googles say they were both born in Liverpool in 1994. I wonder if they are mates.

League One feels like it's clearing the backlog of top half Championship sized clubs that have dropped due to epic mismanagement over the last few seasons. Sunderland, Ipswich, Wednesday, Pompey, Derby. Perhaps Bolton. Rotherham coming down obviously aren't quite the same stature. If it ends up being Huddersfield and Plymouth coming down, that's one thing. Wednesday and Birmingham or Stoke would be another.
I feel like Peterborough are the kind of club that Wrexham could realistically aspire to being. Pretty good comparison in terms of size of ground, catchment area and historical support.
The race for the four playoff spots in league two is coming down to the final matchday. Six or Seven teams have a chance, with Doncaster having won eight on the trot (edit -- nine!) to put themselves in 8th place, just behind on a two goal difference, with a game in hand.
Ten insane minutes left in league 2. Donny after winning 10 in a row and up 2-0 took a red and are now hanging on to a playoff spot at 2-2 on ten men. Meanwhile the race for 7th has been all twisty and turny with goal difference maybe in the balance.
Donny just barely hangs on. Five wins in a row is not enough for Bradford City, who finish one point out of the playoff. Crawley Town get the expected win against lower quarter Grimsby. So it’s MK Dons/Crawley and Doncaster/Crewe.
Devoting 100 literal seconds in EP 5 to a fan turning 100 is next level marketing genius. As a dude who is paid for PR, it’s a pleasure to watch this growth. The respect they show Wrexham (flying to meet said fan at home and not making it about him at all) is truly remarkable.
If they get to promoted again, finances become interesting. They can’t keep that level by themselves.
Finished up S3 on Sunday. It was good, but it didn't hit the consistent heights of S2. Felt like the condensed product schedule mean they had to focus much more on the squads and I was missing the community stories as well as the interesting-angle player profiles that made the last season so damn good. I'm hoping that this season was squeezed in like this so that all future seasons can start dropping in late-spring/near end of season with a full calendar year in production - a one-time shift in the production schedule.
I hadn't expected how much I'd value seeing "old friends" - community members profiled in depth in earlier seasons - pop up here and there. It makes me feel like I'm part of the story, like this is my community. It's a very distinct experience from any other show I can remember.
PS Rosie Hughes is god.
PPS How are we just finding out that Humphrey spent 3 years as Prince William's roommate at Eton???

Too bad it’s only 14+ hour flights. I’m flying Polaris this summer but only a 9.5 hour flight.

Think it was their preparatory (private elementary) rather than Eton. Eton famously gives each boy his own room.
Wrexham was able to sign Okonkwo on a free from Arsenal, so they are bringing back their top two goalies from last year. Big move for them, they gave up a lot less goals once they got him on loan last year.
