Week 7 - By the Numbers

I'd love to see some analysis about the Pats' run defense this week.  To my unschooled eyes, it seemed like they repeatedly had any given run jammed up on first attack only to see Ivory or Johnson hesitate, cutback, or break a tackle and end up turning a TFL into a 7-8 yard gain (or more).  It was really weird to me -- almost the way a screen play will look like a jail-break sack only to realize that the D has been suckered into it by the offense, it seemed like the Pats would get the initial win off the snap, but then fail to make the play.  Maybe it was the absence of Mayo?

Some of it IMO had to do with scheme.  Most of the time to my eyes they were playing with 2 LBs in Collins/Hightower and 5 DBs.  Collins was playing the Mike and he is out of position there as he doesn't attack the LOS as well as he does side to side.  Some of it also had to do with the DL playing like total shit against the run.  Chandler Jones and Nink were crashing inside leaving the outside wide open for Ivory to attack.  It also led Geno Smith to break contain and pick up key first downs.  Wilfork was getting pushed around by Mangold.  Walker was getting pushed around by whoever was against him.

I made this comment in the game thread, but for lack of a better term (hello Peter King) it has been weird that they have been gashed on the ground in week 1, got their shit together for two games, got gashed again in week 4, got their shit together for two more games, then got gashed again in week 7. Are they just getting complacent every few weeks or are there issues specific to each individual game / matchup?

Edit: also, there is probably some truth to Wilfork not being able to put forth his best effort with only 3 days rest. He was a beast against Buffalo. Hopefully he can rest up over the next 10 days.

Pretty much all this.  I dont know what sort of contain they were trying to run against Geno Smith, but it was either poorly designed or wasnt being executed correctly.  They rushed three a couple of times early and it was just free yardage for Smith. I thought Walker looked better than Wilfork and held ground better, but he was not good.  Collins is a real liability against the run inside, didnt shed blockers well and got fooled by misdirection.
