Yesterday I installed some new software on a virtual machine. It is running XP, and the host machine is Windows 7. When I tried to shut down the vm, I got an error that winlogon.exe is faulted, then it restarts. This happens whenever I try to shut down.

Thankfully I can put the whole machine into hibernation, but sooner or later I'll have to restart the vm. I scoured the internet and I see all kinds of suggestions on how to fix this, but precious few are directed towards vm's, but maybe that doesn't matter anyway. Most of them suggest running the "SFC.EXE /SCANNOW" and inserting the XP install cd to repair the system files, but 1) I'm in the middle of Indiana on business and don't have the CD with me (I have the product key though) and 2) the VM has a complex build of software and I would prefer not to break it even more. I do have a snapshot I could go back to if I had to, but I would prefer to just fix this instead.

Any other suggestions besides the SCANNOW routine? Have any other utilities evolved over the years that would be simpler?
