Vincent Jackson Dreams

Tom Curran claims that the Bucs are getting "hammered" with calls on Vincent Jackson and argues that the Patriots should be in on him.  He suggests that a package of Amendola and picks go back to Tampa.  The trade deadline is Tuesday.

He doesn't claim to have any indication that the Patriots are indeed pursuing this and it's indeed rare when the Pats make a move that someone in the media predicted or advocated.  I can't remember the last time that happened under BB.

Then again, despite the improved performance of the offense in the last three games, Jackson is an interesting idea and the Tampa-NE trade highway has been used often.  And former Patriots front office guy Jason Licht works for the Bucs.

http://www.csnne.com/blog/patriots-talk/patriots-need-make-run-bucs-jackson

In case you don't want to click on the link, here's the gist of his argument for the move:

The Patriots have the cap room to easily deal with the rest of Jackson’s 2013 salary, and if New England didn’t want to pay Jackson at the 2015 rate the Bucs negotiated, they could release him with no further damage. Or they could renegotiate a new deal with him.

With Tom Brady getting better protection and Rob Gronkowski’s performances getting better each week, the Patriots’ offensive woes of the first few games are in the dust.

But if Gronk goes down (and that’s been known to happen) the Patriots are back to having an issue. The 6-5, 241-pound Jackson is insurance.

In the end, this is probably a huge long shot...hence the thread title.

If the Pats can even afford it, it's only just barely, and Jackson isn't worth his base salary going forward, so it's only a rental. Who knows if he even adjusts to the offense so quickly. I don't think it makes much sense, the offense will always be ok if Brady is protected, and I'd rather use resources there or on D.

Why does he think the Bucs want Amendola?
He speculates that a slot receiver is "handier" to have than a downfield receiver for a developing team like Tampa.  He also notes that the Bucs would want the picks (in an amount and round or rounds to be determined).

I agree here. I'd also like to pass. I've seen enough splashes from our current WR to continue developing Tyms, Dobson, and get more touches for Amendola.

Cap hit is one thing -- I'd hate to give up picks for a rental as well (although the picks may not be worth much due to VJ's base salary).

Gronk is better than VJax and I'll take my chances his knees don't get taken out again. If Gronk is around VJax doesn't provide a whole lot that we don't already have in some way or another. If they were going to make this kind of trade I'd get DL or LB help (or OL, even) way before WR.

Plenty of WR have come in here and have been unable to learn our offense.  Middle of the year, with no training camp or preason what makes us think Jackson will?  And, honestly on the list of upgrades for this team WR is near the bottom.

This is a good summary of my thoughts on the idea as well.

That said, this isn't the craziest idea out there for a deadline trade

In what world is Brady only worth a 1st round pick (not even a top 5/10 pick) and a 33 year old wr? If you are going to come up with a crazy trade at least try a little harder to be fair.

It's an insane story that takes all the old media biases about the Pats (institutional arrogance, dumping players), spew out gibberish and quote Charlie Casserly as the cherry on top. And yet, ESPN allowed it to run

Don't dignify.

The deal is simple.  Garber runs a one-in-a-thousand shot (being generous) up the flagpole.  If lightning strikes, he is a genius.  There is no accountability if he is wrong because the media are accountable to no one, not even themselves.

He is a way's down there on the priority list, but it may be worth improving the pass-heavy/hurry up offense that is most likely to happen as a result of minimal running back depth. Obviously agree with LBs as the highest need though.

I wish we'd have a better idea of how the running game will be without Ridley.

The only thing noteworthy about that story is that Charlie Casserly actually comes off as the lone voice of reason.

Adam Shefter just said the Patriots are one of four teams talking to Tampa about Vincent Jackson, and Tampa is demanding a second round pick to get it done.

I think it was Ian Rapoport with this report, if it makes a difference.

I believe Shefter also mentioned that Doug Martin is available and even more likely to be traded than Jackson and that the Pats are also interested in him.

FOXBORO -- The Patriots are among a handful of teams who have made calls to the Buccaneers inquiring about a trade that would include Tampa Bay receiver Vincent Jackson, according to a report by NFL Media.
The 6-foot-5 receiver could be had for a second or third-round pick, per the report. Other teams that have called about Jackson include the Seahawks, Eagles and Chiefs.

While an OL or front seven player would obviously be preferable, there aren't any logical candidates available for trade.

Jackson or Martin would help this team, but I don't know how much or whether it will really matter given the troubles along both lines.

Can they land Jackson AND Martin for a combination of a second round pick, Amendola, and something else? No idea what Martins value is at the moment but certainly could add a lot of depth to the offense.

Depth they may need if they want to beat Denver.

Highly doubt they offer a 2nd rounder for VJax and Martin, let alone V-Jax by himself. Looking at what Denver has done in the offseason is the exact strategy the Pats should have followed. Denver doesn't have a chance because Manning pees himself when the lights are brightest but certainly you need talent around you in order to win.
