Many of you probable saw the CBS series Sports Science segment a few months ago regarding the use of weighted bats by batters in the on deck circle in an attempt to increase their bat speed in their upcoming at bat. I was fascinated by the science that showed the use of donuts and other weights is significantly counterproductive and resulted in slower bat speed and less hard contact (more popups and ground balls from mis-hit balls).

I watch many of the Sox' games on television from Phoenix, but the cameras rarely focus on the next batter warming up. Therefore, I have not been able to see if the Boston players have reduced or ended the use of donuts and other devices. Can those of you who have been attending games report on whether the use of weights has dropped off?

I'd take it seriously if they didn't have that annoying "music" in the background.

(BTW, did they adjust for being tired after the uncounted number of control swings, then x number of practice swings with the weights?)

Watch what the batters do with the weighted bats. If they use them to loosen up their shoulders, that's one thing, if they take full-swing cuts with a weighted bat or a doughnut, that's another.
