I heard him yesterday and a little bit today and Ted Johnson might be the most boring person on radio. I have to turn him off because I’m worried I’m going to fall asleep at the wheel and kill a bunch of people.

Just a cement head.

Ted Johnson is an instant channel change for me as well. Somehow he's a worse radio personality than a spouse.

The real key quotes there, from the Caps Off podcast’s Felipe Fontes, come around 6:30. Here’s a partial transcription:

There’s also quite the commentary from Jack Parodi of that podcast, starting around 7:00:

As someone in the media, aggregations like Kleiman who don't break any stories but instead just take headlines from real reporters and tweet them out for internet clout are the scum of the earth.

He is also a run of the mill shithead who aggregates ANYTHING he notices without any scrutiny on the source or content. He’s a clickbait aggregator bot who happens to have a pulse.

Does anyone pay for Jay King's Celtics podcast? He used to have a free one called Anything is Poddable, and now it's under the new name of Still Poddable and restricts almost all of its content to Patreon subscribers. I don't fault anyone for trying to make a buck, but I already pay for The Athletic where he writes--is there anything from Still Poddable that I can't get from his columns and John Karalis' free podcasts?

I pay for it (at the lowest tier). Brian Robb is on it too. I like a Celtics-specific podcast 2/3 times a week (5x/week at higher tiers). I don't know that there's any crucial info that you're missing out on, but I like the interplay of the hosts (Sam Packard too).

JP Ricciardi has an unreal interview on McAdam and Cotillo's Fenway Rundown podcast this week. I have never heard anyone say "I'm not bitter" followed by minutes of bitter sentiments more than Ricciardi does in this interview. He basically says that the Giants didn't listen to anything he said for the past few years, the "guys with experience" have been drummed out of the game, he doesn't find working in baseball fun anymore, and therefore he decided to retire.

Listening to the latest Name Redacted episode, i would be surprised if he returned to Barstool. He talks about keeping the pod names wherever he goes unlike when he left Barstool. The tone didn’t seem to lean that way. I’d love if he just got a content deal with Spotify and a blend of other new ventures deeper into MLB and beyond.

Bob Ryan really is the best, like you said still a fan of all sports and never got jaded by covering them.
Reading that article brought back memories of searching through the globe for his stories.

I guess this is a good place to tell one story about him. In the fall of 2002 myself and a few others were at the Fours (RIP) after an early season Celtics game vs the Bulls. This also happened to be the date of the first game that Yao Ming played for the Rockets. I was standing by the bar and those highlights came on ESPN.

All of a sudden Bob Ryan is next to me and I say “ Hi Mr Ryan, how do you think Yao will do in the league?”
Bob gets very animated, starts analyzing the highlights, breaking down what Yao needs to work on and what he’s heard from his sources.
It was just a master lesson on basketball he provided to just some random dude. His joy and excitement of watching the game always stuck with me. So glad he still is doing what he loves.

Bob is the best. Met him at a book signing a few years ago at Barnes and Noble. No one was really coming up to him so we talked for 15 minutes about the NBA, LeBron, Havlicek and Jerry West. Just an excellent experience. He's got amazing recall and can claim to have watched pretty much every great NBA player in person dating back to Russell and Wilt. I've loved the couple of episodes of the Simmons podcast with him and Jackie Mac.

Many years ago Ryan was at the Olympics, and IIRC he wrote an article about...archery, or biathlon, or some non-mainstream sport, and he was it interesting and an opportunity to learn and most of all it was clear he LOVED being there, loved seeing new stuff, loved writing about it.

That element is what is missing from most snarky or bitter sportswriting to this day. Everyone says Shank is talented, but not once have I ever thought Shank was enjoying the spectacle of sport. Ryan always did.

Moons ago at Schaefer Stadium, Tony Eason started a game by connecting on his first four passes, a feat noted by someone in press row. When he hit on his fifth, and his sixth, those were also pointed out in the box. When there was a lull, Ryan's unmistakable voice was heard.
"One more," he said, "and he ties Ted Cox."
It was a perfect mic-drop moment.

He drove up this week to do some shows. He does remote shows too. Not sure of this dynamic and how he got hired living in North Carolina. Originally from Dorchester.

He’s great. His piece on Joe Tessitore some years ago (when he was taking over MNF) was impressive because I don’t really care about Tessitore and even found him annoying as a broadcaster, yet Curtis’ piece engaged me.
