Perhaps, but if a coach of color already in the building is the choice of ownership, why go the process of bringing in two others -- on the chance that one of them will a better candidate -- while you could lose the guy you want as he interviews elsewhere? There's often already an optics problem with what are seen as sham interviews; why add to the problem?
Because the sham interviews have often been the internal guy in the building. That was the case when the Raiders hired Jon Gruden, which prompted this adjustment to the rule.

I don't really get the argument here... if the internal guy is the best candidate and he wants to be there, you lose nothing by interviewing others. Those others get experience and maybe you decide one of them is better. Your guy gets to go wherever is best for him, which he would anyway (also if he leaves you get a pick).

Oh well, I guess I'l cede the point. I just think it's silly that Pierce has to wait if the Raiders want him to go from interim to official.

I'm convinced the Vrabel thing is real and the delay is Patriots waiting to see if the Eagles or Cowboys lose this weekend.

Just imagine the Patriots draft a wide receiver in the first round that is explosive, but can't block a lick, but the new GM loves him and deems him a fit. What, is Bill going to give the guy playing time even though he doesn't do the things he believes a full time receiver should?
The Tyquan Thornton experience flies in the face of this otherwise well reasoned argument.

I'm ok with him having the final say. He just needs more people giving him the options.
I keep seeing this sentiment, but does anyone really think that he isn't taking tons of advice from many, many people? I've seen plenty of video from the Pats drafts of the past and the amount of people and info just shown on their boards is certainly more than BB puts together himself. If I recall, they use a very different grading system than most teams and that's probably something BB adapted from others, but I highly doubt he acts as a king more than he acts as a CEO.

It's open to debate how much of it is a CYA move, but the Patriots personnel folks have been complaining for years that all their hard work and analysis too often goes by the wayside when BB gets a strong opinion (good or bad) on a player from one of his college compadres.

I hope BB stays, but if he's gone and we're bringing back an ex-Pat, I'd prefer Flores over Vrabel. I thought he got a raw deal in Miami and he was a great Defensive Coordinator here. Hopefully he gets another shot at an HC position (and isn't black-balled after his lawsuit); would love it if it's with the Pats.
yeah i would like flores to be involved but we would lose two first round pics cause kraft farted at the winter meetings

So, he is taking council from the people closest to the players he is looking to draft? Especially after the Hernandez experience, I would hope he tries his hardest to know who is a good character guy, smart, hard worker, etc. and combine that with what he gets from his internal staff.

Well, that’s the glass half full way of looking at it. The glass half empty way is that he’s swayed by a handful of college guys that he’s buddies with. I have no doubt he got a glowing recommendation from Saban about Mac.

The Saban news makes @Dogman more certain than ever that Belichick is staying
Saban and Vrabel as offensive consultants, Izzy as Special Teams coach, Josh as QB coach/OC, BB as Head coach. Vrabel/Josh/Mayo take over after BB takes the wins record. This is where I am.

I'm going home
FWIW, I made the mistake of leaving NBC Sports Boston on after Celts postgame, and Felger and Holley were on, both laughing at anyone who thinks BB is staying. Curran also doubled down that "Bill Belichick will not coach the New England Patriots in 2024". Holley seems to think it's cute that so many people are clinging to hope based on the between 50-60% of respondents to the interactive poll they put on the screen who think he's staying. They also opined that a Pete Carroll type situation won't happen and the decision to own firing the GOAT is weighing heavily on Kraft, which is why the delay. Either they're being fed some very solid info, or they are going to look really, really silly.

Why the hell do I do this to myself?

Ignore the noise
Don't believe or fuel the hype

That's better.

Curran was locked and loaded on this one, that's for sure.
