No mention of Fred Lynn's 3-HR, 10 RBI game in Detroit early in his career? It may be been his rookie season of 1975 and iirc on his final at bat he hit one off the wall for a double.

Part 1 is just multiple time in Red Sox uniform guys. There are two more parts to come.

The picture is really weird. Is it some kind of spring training intrasquad history day with all different uniforms?

Anyway, I came up empty in my search of Red Sox that wore a number in the 30's that were LHH, black, and contemporary to Rice. Then again with Ed Romero (I think that's Ed in the on deck circle, could be wrong) The only one I came up with in a cursory look was Sam Horn himself, and that doesn't look like Sam Horn.

I was at Mo Vaughn's first 3 HR game against the Orioles in 1996. Rarely do you ever see fans so disappointed to see a hard hit RBI single in the 8th inning (granted the game wasn't that tight at that point (12-6) thanks to a homer by some kid named "Nomar" and some unearned runs just before Mo's at bat in the 8th). But the Red Sox still had a shot at getting the wild card (the win brought them within 3 games with 5 games to play, and one more against the O's), but that was effectively dashed that next game by solid pitching from something called a "Rick Krivda"

Yup IIRC he missed a HR by two ft and ended up with a triple, Best game I ever saw for a Sox hitter.
It was a triple. I was sure he'd hit it out. It was incredible. God, 41 years ago - gives you a feel for how rare those types of performances are. Do not ever let this kid get away...

I was at the Trot Nixon 3-HR game in Detroit. He was hitting about a buck-33 a few weeks before that, and my ex- said he was her favorite player..."I like him, and he's going to be good". I called her in the room the next day for a game on the tube, and he hit a bomb. Did it again and he hit a bomb a few times again when she came into the room that season. Then we sat in the LF grandstand, first game we ever saw Trot play in person.....and the first two were within 10 feet of us. 3rd one went into the upper deck in RF, and he was on deck when the last out was made that night. She was kind of a "good luck charm/guardian angel" for Trot in '99.......and I was out of town on business, and she wasn't with me when he got the RBI for Cleveland in the extra inning game in the '07 ALCS....or I could've used that in the divorce complaint a few years later.... :)

Am I imagining things, or does John Valentin appear disproportionately in lists of improbable offensive Red Sox performances?
He also hit for the cycle and turned an unassisted triple play. So, yes.

He was the only player to do both of those things until Troy Tulowitski got a fucking gigantic assist from a travishamockery of scoring to get a triple. I won't even embed the video. Even though the cycle is a totally random artificial thing, he should not have been credited a triple. David Ortiz's unlucky bounce a couple weeks ago was a more legitimate triple chance than Tulo's (which was a 2B and choose one of two errors allowing him to take 3B)

Lynn's last at bat that night was a 3 run HR in the 9th. The triple came in the 3rd inning.. I was listening on the radio that night and just read about it on the .com.
Fun stuff.
