Teoscar to the Dodgers (1 year, $23.5M)

An historic offseason for them continues, and a Sox target is off the board. I’m sure Boston media will react well.

BREAKING: Outfielder Teoscar Hernández and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a one-year, $23.5 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Hernández joins Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow on the new-look Dodgers, who add another All-Star bat to the lineup.

Why just one year?
Does seem odd. Passan followed up with another tweet:

Of the $23.5 million in Teoscar Hernández's deal with the Dodgers, $8.5 million will be deferred, to be paid out from 2030 to 2039, sources tell ESPN. The corner-outfield market is tough, and Hernández opted for a big one-year deal with the best team over other multiyear offers.

I get that but why would Hernandez take that deal other than chasing a ring (which I get!)? I guess it's a make-good one-year deal after a relatively average offensive season in '23.
Yes, make good to set up a a huge deal. Same as Giolito but more confidence in himself.

Because nobody offered significantly more?

By the way, whoever that was that was breaking deals (like Teo to RS) but being wrong, should get another job

Would not shock me if the next CBA closes the deferred payments loophole the dodgers are exploiting this year. (Just like the Steve Cohen CBA tax)

He gets to play in the most home run friendly park for right handed hitters, protected by a deep and talented lineup. Plus a chance to play for a championship and live in LA. Not too shabby.

Oh, I totally get it. I'm just surprised no one offered like... 4/85 or 4/95 or something. Maybe someone did but he went with this.

Is his deferred money worth more than $14m now? I get the attraction to LA but if your only skill is RH power hitting, do your pillow deal in Fenway! Whatever, I hope the Dodgers face a team loaded with tough righty starters in the NLDS and he grounds their stupid super team into a bunch of DPs.

Only 8.5 is deferred which makes his contract valued at about 20m

What’s the loophole? Sale’s extension with the Sox included a lot of deferred money, no?
There is no “loophole”.

Any team can do the same thing, it’s a different way to structure a contract to pay a player.

It all just comes down to the present day value of the contract, no one is gaining an advantage. Sounds like the Dodgers signed him for the equivalent of about 1/20M, and that’s what they will be billed for lux tax purposes.

The only “problem” with deferred money is initial reporting of contracts doesn’t always accurately reflect the true contract value.

Maybe the media can just report the actual value of these deals (i.e. “Shohei signed for 10/460M”) rather than the way they do it now so people don’t get annoyed by the contract structure.

All things being equal, I feel like this organization is currently better at developing hitting prospects than pitching, so I'd rather overpay for pitching. So IF (big "if") Hernandez would keep the Sox from making their best offer to Imanaga, then I'm glad they passed.

My youngest is going to be extremely pumped about this
I've been a big Teoscar fan since his time with the Jays and he took a bit of extra time with our son before a game when saw the Jays play against the Twins in Minny

The youngest also loves Mookie and changed team alliances when Mookie was traded to the Dodgers. So he's really been enjoying the offseason and this will put it over the top for him

Kinda doubt it, but maybe.

The one year deal is for his age 30 season and will come close to doubling his lifetime earnings (he's made $29 thusfar.)

If he declined 4/85 for ages 30-34 (in favor of 1/23), it means he thinks he'll get better than a 3/62 contract for ages 31-34.

Shrug. We'll see.
