Even if that's only partially right — like, Mata might be a late inning guy instead — that's the kind of pitching development that makes it possible to offer a fourteen year deal to Juan Soto or a cool half billion to Shohei Ohtani.
While that's mostly true... that hypothetical mind-blowing earth shattering offer would have to be considered against offering long term deals to younger players too. Those young guys don't all just make a teensy bit, especially after the "arb" years kick in.
Now that Rhy Hoskins of the Phillies is likely out for the season, does anyone see a scenario where they look to trade for a 1st baseman? Bobby D perhaps? DD certainly has some familiarity with him. They are in win now mode and DD certainly isn't afraid to trade prospects....
DD's not moving anything of value for Dalbec, but perhaps a couple of lottery tickets and an open roster spot gets it done. Not sure what else they have in house to pair with him, but Schwarber could pick up some of the innings at first.
Dalbec would be an incredible fit in that lineup and the NL East's ballparks — they are replacing a K-prone, bad defense, right handed first baseman with big-time power, and it just so happens that we have one of those — and we could really use that roster spot.
The Phillies have an interesting farm system, with a bunch of flawed-but-potentially-interesting guys in the back half of their top-30 who you could see as a return in a deal like this. You could imagine getting one of their young position players with question marks, or a couple of dudes to replenish our stock of hard-throwers to cycle through the bullpen — basically, Ort types who aren't yet on the 40-man.
I think this happens early next week.

It does seem like a pretty good match; Dalbec is expendable and they need the roster spot. But, they’d rather bet something for him than nothing and he probably gets claimed if DFAd; seems like a few prospects who don’t need to be on the 40 would work. DD drafted Dalbec, so imagine he may hold him in somewhat high regard.
Then again, the Phillies are in GFIN mode and may aim their sights higher than Bobby D. Even though the schedules are balanced now, their top competitors have a ton of hard throwing rightly starters that Bobby is unplayable against.

Good post nvalvo. I see a fit here as well, that is why i posted it. Surprised no outlets in Boston have speculated about it yet. We all know Bobby D likely wouldn't bring one of their top 10 prospects, but MLB has 14 of their top 30 as RHP, and another 10 as OF. These are both areas where Chaim could continue to build depth, as well as clear that 40 man spot. As frustrating as he can be, i kind of like Dalbec. But with Raffy here for 11 years, Casas looking like an inexpensive piece for a while, and Turner signed for 2 years, maybe a change of scenery is the best thing for him.

In theory, I'd rather trade Turner , save some cash, and put Dalbec in Turner's role. Turner should be able to play first and is the veteran Philly needs.

Turner literally hasn't played a regular season game for the Red Sox. Signing guys and trading them like that is an exceptional way to make sure that nobody wants to sign with your team in the future.
This guy just uprooted his family to sign a deal with the team, in large part because one of his good friends talked about how awesome it was playing here, and you want to turn around and send him packing to Philly?
FFS, man.
Maybe he wants another ring? Maybe he wanted to sign there but they didn't have room for him then?
You also have to wait for awhile before you can trade a guy that you signed in the offseason. I think the earliest you can do it is....sometime in June?

I’m heading to Ft Myers in a couple days to visit family. Wondering if we can catch some extended ST action or games at or around the JetBlue complex. Will be my first time there though I played in tournaments at the old Sox complex. Any advice/insight appreciated.
